Game Overview

Roulette became something of a phenomenon in my country of the United Kingdom, when it first became available on so-called “fixed odds betting terminals” back in 1999. At that time, these terminals allowed you to play casino games for high stakes previously only available to those who visited a fully-fledged casino. It wasn’t long before the machines became controversial, however, and today they are far more heavily regulated and restricted than in their original incarnations. The Roulette games on those machines used to have relatively high staking limits, whereas online casinos seemingly always catered for those with smaller bankrolls. Enter Playtech’s 5p Roulette – an RNG-based European Roulette game that permits tiny wagers while offering the full 97.3% RTP and 36x maximum payout.

Don’t expect too much in terms of special features here though – as you might expect for a game being played for penny stakes, Playtech has stuck to the bare essentials for this release. We do get both a conventional betting layout and the French-style “racetrack” design, as well as both standard and turbo play modes and a frighteningly high table maximum of £10,000 per spin. Thankfully, those who do wish to bet large amounts can make use of higher-value chips with which to place their bets – can you imagine piling up £10,000 using 5p chips, even using a computer mouse?!

If you enjoy playing roulette but avoid doing so at times because of the cost involved, then our 5p Roulette demo could be just what you are looking for – it’s available to play below:

Not all Roulette games are barebones, stripped-back efforts like what we’re reviewing today. Take another Playtech game, for example – the aptly titled 101 Roulette, which has a much larger betting layout and a maximum payout of 100x the player’s stake. Quite often though, these so-called “enhanced” roulette games will often offer lower payouts than their standard counterparts – 101 Roulette has an RTP of 96.19%, for example, a fair bit less than a normal single-zero European table where the RTP is usually 97.30%. Still, anything has got to be better than playing American Roulette – that variant has two zeroes on the wheel, resulting in an RTP of just 94.60% – why anybody would choose to play such a game online is beyond me! Oh, and don’t even get me started on the triple-zero wheels which supposedly exist in Las Vegas… I think I’d lose my mind if I saw people spending money on one of those!

The payouts offered in 5p Roulette are identical to other European variants of the game – dropping a chip on a single number (a “straight up” bet) will return 35/1 on your money or 36x including your original stake, whilst placing your chips on the dividing lines between two numbers returns – surprise, surprise – 18x should the ball happen to land in either pocket. There are various other payouts, but the most well-known bets in Roulette are almost certainly the even money red, black, odd, even, high, and low options. If you switch to the racetrack betting layout, three more alternative bets are available – these place a bet on a large section of the wheel for you and make for an interesting change if you haven’t seen them before.

The betting limits for 5p roulette aren’t as straightforward as you might think – the placard on the table shows “Min/Max €0.01/€100.00”, for example, but goes on to state “Table Max: €10,000”. All this means is that you are limited to putting €100.00 on a single number, but you can place several such bets at once and up to €1000 at a time on the even-money and 2/1 betting spots. If you ever drop €10,000 on a round of Roulette, please don’t forget to leave a chip or two on the zero spot as well!

Can there really be any gamblers reading this who have no prior experience playing Roulette? It’s a hard thought to process, but I guess it’s possible! If you do happen to be such a player, don’t worry – you’ll be a seasoned roulette expert within just a few minutes of play!

After loading the game, pick a chip denomination from the rack displayed in the bottom left, and then start placing chips on the number layout above. This is an RNG-based Roulette game, meaning you have your own table to play at, and nobody else is going to be left waiting whilst you finish sorting out your bets. That’s great for newcomers to Roulette, who might otherwise find themselves cut short whilst placing chips on a “Live Casino” variant of the game.

Once you are happy with your bets, you can go ahead and hit the spin button located in the bottom right. If you have the turbo option enabled, the game will immediately skip to showing you the result of the current round. Otherwise, there will be a brief spinning animation between these events – it’s only a couple of seconds, so it doesn’t make a huge difference whether you play with this on or off.

Playtech has included a couple of handy controls next to the spin button – a 2x bet option, for example, which will be useful for anybody that has decided to try a Martingale-like system. What’s that? If you don’t know, don’t even get started on it, as it’s the most surefire way to get sucked into the gambler’s fallacy that I’m aware of!

5p Roulette Bonus Features

Unfortunately, no bonus features are included in 5p Roulette.

Pros

  • European rules are much more favourable to the player than US rules.
  • A clear user interface works well on all devices.
  • Bets accepted right down to just 10p a spin.

Cons

  • No special features – it’s straightforward European Roulette and nothing else.

Final Thoughts

There’s not much more to say about this one – if you want to play roulette for small money, Gamevy has created the perfect game for you! If you’re not overly fussed about being able to place 10p chips on the layout, you could go for any other version of roulette that you prefer the look of.
