80spop (AvatarUX) Slot Demo & Review

Thanks, AvatarUX, for reminding me how old I am by creating a slot themed on the 1980s. I was just a kid at the time, but I do have memories of listening to music on Walkmans (when they didn’t chew up the cassettes, that is), going to video arcades, watching video rentals on VHS and Betamax, and playing on the first ever Nintendo games console (NES). It is the 80s pop scene that is specifically under the microscope in the 80sPop slot from AvatarUX, and heading straight to the specs of this slot, I can reveal it has 5 reels, up to 65,536 ways to win, a 96.01% RTP, and a tasty 20,000x max win.

The PopWins mechanic has brought AvatarUX plenty of success, and once again, we’re given a cascading reels slot where wins pop into more symbols and expand the reels. Each expansion increases the height of the reels up to a maximum of six during the base game and eight during a free spins bonus, where a progressive multiplier and star symbols are in play that pay 2x, 3x, or 4x their standard payout value.

Whether you want to poke fun at the 80s or are around my age and enjoy a bit of nostalgia, you’ll likely partake in a few spins on this release to find out what it’s all about. However, rather than logging into your favourite online casino, you can play our 80sPop demo slot for free. It’s ready to try below.

80spop Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

80spop Slot Paytable
80sPop slot paytable

I highly doubt there’s been another slot specifically themed on 80s pop music, so you have to credit AvatarUX for coming up with a theme we’ve yet to see. There are a few wider 80s-themed slots around, though, with Retro Tapes and Retro Sweets from Push Gaming being two recent examples. Retro Tapes was a slot that focused on the cassette tapes I mentioned in the introduction of this review, which, if you were around back in those days, you’d know the pain of your fave mix tapes getting chewed beyond repair. That slot doesn’t have quite the potential of this 80sPop, with a max win of 10,000x the stake, but it offers an equally entertaining experience.

While cassette tapes dominated the reels on that slot, the paytable on 80sPop offers a bit more variety. The best paying symbol is the Star, which, as standard, will return 4x the stake for five in a row. That star symbol also has an increasing payout depending on the height of the reels. They’re worth 2x their standard payout on reels 6 high (the highest possible in the base game), 3x at 7 high, and 4x when reels are fully unlocked. The premium symbols are a mix of a stereotypical view of what the average 80s pop stars looked like and the instruments they used. The three main Glammed-up Singers share a top payout of 2x the stake for a five-symbol combination, while the Microphone, Electric Guitar, and Drum also share the same max win of 1.5x. Four musical notes represent the low pays, which once again share the same returns with a value of 1x for five symbols across a payline

AvatarUX offers a comprehensive bet selection across its catalogue of slots, which is again present in 80sPop. Players can choose from a minimum stake of €0.20 a spin up to a maximum of €100.

80spop Slot Base Game

Initially, your base game spins start on a reel configuration that offers 5 reels, 3 rows, and 486 ways to win. The 80sPop slot also supports the Pays Both Ways mechanic, meaning you can create wins from right to left and left to right. To create a winning combination and thus receive a payout, you’ll need 3 or more matching symbols across a win line starting from the leftmost or rightmost reels.

Popwins, Expanding Reels, And Multipliers

If you’ve played AvatarUX slots before, you’ll probably know that your spins never just end once a winning combo hits. The PopWins mechanic returns, which means winning symbols disappear, winning reels expand, and new symbols drop into play. That process repeats until no new winning combos occur. Each reel can expand up to six positions high during the base game, and each expansion will increase the number of ways to win on the reels.

80spop Slot Bonus Features

80spop Slot Free Spins Feature
80sPop slot free spins feature

If a spin during the base game unlocks all reels at maximum height, you win the free spins bonus. However, that does not kick into action until the current spin ends. Until then, all cascade wins with a fully unlocked reel set will increase a multiplier by 1x, which will carry over into the free spins bonus.

Free Spins Feature

You receive 5 free spins but can increase that number by spinning a bonus wheel. The first wheel gives you the chance to add between 0 and 4 additional spins, while the second can increase by 0 and 5. The free spins start with the multiplier value accrued during the triggering base game spin and increase 1x for each winning pop. That multiplier will not reset between spins.

Like any normal spin, the free spins bonus starts with a 5×3 reel configuration that will expand after every winning combination. However, during the bonus, the reels can be expanded up to eight high instead of six. Plus, they will only rest back to the size of the shortest reel on each spin and not back to 5×3. If you fully unlock the reels during the feature, each additional Pop Win will now award 2 extra free spins.

Bonus Buy

You have two options if you want to purchase the free spins bonus via the buy bonus option on 80sPop. You can choose to pay 85x your stake to buy 5 free spins with a random multiplier or pay 85x to gamble for up to 12 spins with a random multiplier. However, the latter option comes with risk, as losing the gamble will leave you with nothing.

Pros

  • A great combination of features and mechanics.
  • The free spins bonus can create some fairly substantial global win multipliers.

Cons

  • Some players may have already tired of the AvatarUX mechanics.

80spop Slot Review Final Thoughts

Sometimes, I get the feeling the PopWins mechanic has become a victim of its own success. There are so many great titles in the series that it's now becoming difficult for AvatarUX to expand on them. I guess what I'm saying is that while 80sPop has many of the ingredients that made previous titles so popular, it doesn't really add anything new. It’s still a good slot, but if I wanted PopWins, I’d go for some of the earlier titles.
