Epic Strike – or scatter-pay – games are fast becoming a genre in their own right. Just recently, we’ve already had Red Hot Sapphires, Jade Shuriken, and Wild Marlin Big Game Fishing. However, in fairness, none of those games has much in common with this one besides offering scatter-pay secondary paytables. Hyper Strike is another such game, although that one has the scatter-pay mechanic as one of its primary features, so perhaps that is a better comparison with this game. However you look at it, though, I still think this game is essentially a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory unlicensed slot. But that’s just my opinion – give it a try yourself and see if you agree!
So, how do the payouts in 9 Mad Hats compare with other Epic Strike games? The secondary paytable is very similar to what we have seen before. 2,000x for the maximum of nine scatters is a tasty win, but this soon drops to just 500x for eight scatters, 100x for seven, 40x for six, and, well, below that… it isn’t really worth shouting about. The regular paytable offers 125x your bet for the maximum of five-of-a-kind, whilst the triple lucky seven symbol will pay you 37.5x for a completed pay line. The double lucky seven is worth 20x, whilst the single will pay you 7.5x, and any combination of five of these symbols is worth 3.25x – not the best consolation prize, but once again, any win is better than a loss!
Your wagering options kick off at €0.20 per spin and max out at €60.00, which is a plenty decent spread, and ought to be sufficient for all but the craziest degenerate slots players!
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game holds few surprises – it’s a five reel, three row layout that takes up the right side of the screen, with the left of the reels being reserved for the Epic Strike payouts. Note that this arrangement may change depending on the device you are using to play, but all pertinent information will be displayed around the main screen. All wins require at least three matching symbols starting from the left.
Epic Strike Feature
The epic strike prizes can be won during both the base game and the free spins feature, but it’s the base game where you’ll be most happy to see these special symbols show their faces! The only downside to this is that they can block other regular payline wins if they happen to land in undesirable positions, but this is unlikely to concern you if you catch enough of them to win a sizable prize!

The free spins symbol appears on reels two, three, and four only and has no cash payout of its own. Hitting all three symbols on a single spin will transport you to the free spins wheel, where your bonus round statistics will be determined.

The free spins wheel consists of ten segments with varying numbers of spins ranging from ten up to a maximum of 30. Only the 25 and 30 free spin segments come with the maximum 3x multiplier, whilst the remaining segments offer 10, 12, 15, or 20 free spins with a lower 2x multiplier.

I’m not the biggest fan of these scatter-pay games, primarily because a large amount of RTP allocated to the Epic Strike prizes takes away from the value of the regular pay line wins. It all balances out in the end, of course, but I feel I have a much better chance of coming out with a profit on a game that does not include this feature compared to one that does. Still, I realise that these games are incredibly popular with a large segment of players, so if this type of slot appeals to you, I have little doubt that you will thoroughly enjoy this one.
