Age Of Gods Demo Slot (Playtech) Slot Demo & Review

If you have been playing online slots for as long as I have, you might well remember when Playtech launched their “Age of the Gods” series of slots. One minute they didn’t exist, the next was 20 of them… and they just kept on coming. You may also remember this happened at just the same time they lost their exclusive license to the Marvel range of online slots… an interesting coincidence, right? Amazingly, all the games featured four linked progressive jackpots too, just like their earlier Marvel games too. This first game in the series is a 20 payline game with an RTP of 95.02% and a maximum non-progressive win of 50,000x stake.

The eponymous gods in this game are the Greek gods Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, Hercules, and Aphrodite. Each god has its own free spins feature, as well as a “Pantheon” feature which activates whenever all five gods land anywhere on a pay line, but the payout is a little underwhelming at just 10x your stake. Despite Playtech’s efforts, many players believe this original game is the best of the series to this day. Still, if you do enjoy this game, the rest of the series is likely to appeal to you too.

All of the work that goes into creating a unique slot engine and math model is enormous, so Playtech would have been crazy to throw that work away, so reskinning the Marvel slots as a new franchise all of their own was the only sensible business decision they could make. Age Of Gods Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Paytable Of Age Of The Gods Slot

Most if not all of the Greek gods have their roots in Roman ancestors – for example, Zeus was known as Jupiter or Jove in Roman mythology. If you trace back far enough the only two distinct lines of mythological gods are the Roman/Greek ones, and the Norse gods such as Odin and Valkyrie. Outside of this series, Play’N’Go’s Rise of Olympus, Thunderkick’s Midas Golden Touch and NetEnt’s Divine Fortune are just a handful of similarly themed online slots. There are some signs these games were created quickly – for example, the graphics are middle of the road at best. The soundtrack is suitably epic, however, especially during the various bonus games.

Athena is the highest paying god of the five, with 50x your stake paid for a full line of five. The wild symbol seems to be the greatest god of all, however, paying an enormous 500x your bet for a full line of five. The scatter symbol also pays well at 100x for five-of-a-kind, although that combination seems to be exceedingly rare. After Athene, Zeus and Poseidon are next down the pecking order with 25x your stake for a full line of those, whilst Hercules pays 20x, then finally Aphrodite and Hades return 15x for a full line. These aren’t bad payouts, but as ever, the free spins are where the real action is – not counting the progressive jackpots, of course!

The betting range begins at €0.20 and tops out at €40.00 per spin, though it seems unlikely every casino would be willing to take on the risk of a 50,000x hit at €40.00. In-game RTP is set 95.02%, so not too shabby for a jackpot slot at all.

Base Game & Modifiers

Play With 5 Reels, 20 Paylines, And Win Huge Progressive Jackpots On Playtech's Age Of The Gods Online Slot

Age of the Gods Online Slot uses the traditional five by three layout with twenty fixed paylines – there is no ability to play fewer play lines, unlike many other Playtech slots. Across the top of the screen, the current payout of the four progressive jackpots is shown. Remember when playing progressive slots that a share of every spin goes towards the jackpots. This has a direct effect on the RTP of the game, but considering that the Age of the Gods Video Slot has four jackpots, its contribution of 0.99% per spin is better than average for a progressive machine.

Pantheon Of Power On Reels Feature

In any slot, the only combinations that usually pay are matching symbols, or lines containing matching symbols and some number of wilds. Age of the Gods slot has an exception to this age-old rule in the form of the Pantheon of Power on Reels Feature. This is a cool addition to the game – line up all five gods on a payline and you win, irrespective of them being different symbols. The problem is it doesn’t come along very often, and the payoff feels extremely tight with this in mind – just 10x your stake. Still, it’s better than nothing for what would be a losing spin in any other game.

Age Of Gods Slot Free Spins Feature

Play 4 Different Free Spin Features On Age Of Gods Video Slot

As is the norm, three or more scatter symbols on the reels will trigger the bonus feature in the Age of the Gods slot game. What isn’t so typical is what happens next – you will be taken to a screen showing twenty coins, from which you will select coins until you complete a matching set of three. There are four possible free spin modes, each based on a different one of the gods but all awarding the same nine free spins and all having the additional benefit of stacked wilds on all reels.

Athena Free Games Feature

At the beginning of each free spin, Athena will award a random multiplier of between 2x and 5x. A full screen of wilds at the maximum 5x multiplier results in a 500x payoff on each of the 20 pay lines, multiplied by five, resulting in a maximum win of 50,000x your stake.

Zeus Free Games Feature

The Zeus Free Games boast a locked stack of wilds on reel three, making that magical full screen just a tiny bit easier to hit. The spins begin with three spins with no multiplier, after which Zeus will boost the multiplier to 2x. Free spins seven through nine see a further boost to a maximum multiplier of 3x, so the maximum win in this mode is 30,000x your stake.

Poseidon Free Games Feature

Legend has it that the god of the sea, Poseidon, possessed a magical trident that could shoot bolts of lightning. At least, that’s Playtech’s interpretation of the myth – and who are we to argue when those bolts just happen to turn any symbol on the reels into a wild? Up to five wilds can be zapped on each of your nine spins, but with no multiplier, this feature can only return a maximum of 10,000x your stake.

Hercules Free Games Feature

This is the one feature you won’t want to hit – Hercules appears as a stacked wild on the middle reel, just like in the Zeus Free Games, only without the additional multipliers. This makes it by far the worst of the four features, but the 10,000x maximum win may be more likely in this mode. Unfortunately, it is impossible to know.

Free Games Repeater Feature

After you finish playing your nine free games, you will be returned to the wall of coins and given a second shot at playing another feature. If you are lucky, you can continue playing features indefinitely – but of course, there is a catch… pick a coin featuring the Hades icon and your luck will run out and the feature will end.

Progressive Jackpot Feature

The jackpot feature can activate randomly after any spin – even a losing one. The four jackpots pay out much less today than they did a few years ago, with current averages of €150, €2,000, €40,000, and €200,000. How happy you will be with these numbers will probably depend on how much you are paying per spin!

Age Of Gods Slot Review Final Thoughts

As the Age of the Gods series has developed and expanded over the years, the graphics have certainly improved – newer games don’t look quite so rushed in the graphics and animation department. On the other hand, the maximum payouts seem to have been dropping over the years, whilst the industry has been moving in the opposite direction towards bigger and bigger max wins.

For me, the original is still the best – but there is still a lot of fun to be had in checking out the rest of the series as well. On the whole, it’s not surprising that the Age of the Gods video slot remains one of Playtech’s most popular games to this day.
