Aquanauts Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
We’ve already spoken a little about the theme of the Aquanauts online slot, but let’s go a little bit deeper for a moment; the world’s oceans are largely unexplored, an inevitable consequence of their near incomprehensible vastness. Some estimates put the number of undiscovered species at several hundred thousand, whilst others believe the number could be in the millions. It’s fascinating to wonder what could be out there just waiting to be discovered. Many of the creatures that populate the depths of the world’s oceans are almost alien-like compared with the land animals we are much more familiar with. Alchemy Gaming clearly agrees, as their reels are filled with unusual creatures such as jellyfish, octopus, and sharks, along with one or two brave aquanauts who have ventured into the depths.
With 3,125 pay ways spanning the large 5×5 playfield, you can’t expect the prizes to be massive in a game like this. The aim here is to simultaneously win on many pay ways rather than hoping for one single high-paying combination. The wild takes the top spot on the paytable with a return of 10x your bet for each full pay way of five-of-a-kind, whilst the highest-paying regular symbol is the yellow aquanaut with a return of 6.75x your bet. Things drop off quickly after this, as the red aquanaut pays just 2.25x for all five, the green pays 1.75x, and the blue 1.5x your stake for five-of-a-kind. These numbers do feel disappointing but keep in mind there is that ascending multiplier to factor in as well – just three or four consecutive winning combinations will have your winnings multiplied by a factor of four or five. While testing this game, I saw the multiplier reach 8x on a couple of occasions. The bottom line is that there is often more to the numbers on a paytable than meets the eye!
Alchemy Gaming offers a tabbed interface for selecting your bet size, which sounds like overkill at first but does, in fact, work very well. You can opt to bet as low as €0.30 per round, whilst the maximum is set at €21.00. The “Quick Bet” page allows you to choose from several pre-set steps in between these two extremes, while the advanced tab lets you choose any amount you like in €0.30 steps.
Base Game & Modifiers
The Aquanauts slot game looks a lot like a grid slot after you first load it up, but it’s actually a 3,125-way machine that uses a 5×5 playfield. Any group of three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left will award a win, and winning combinations are immediately removed from the screen to allow new symbols to fall into place. This setup is often referred to as cascading or rolling reels, but Aquanauts adds more to the formula:
Rolling Reels
When winning symbols are removed from the screen, you will be paid for the combination before new symbols fall into view. When this happens, the current win multiplier will increase by 1x, similar to how the bonus round works in many Megaways slots. During the free spins bonus, the multiplier can increase by 2x or 3x instead of just 1x.
Echo Roll Modifier
After any winning combination, this modifier can trigger and randomly award a second guaranteed winning combination. This feature can also trigger during the free spin bonus round; however, it will always guarantee a high-paying symbol combination during that mode.
Aquanauts Slot Bonus Features
The main bonus round is triggered by hitting at least three scatter symbols during the base game. Three will award the minimum of eight free spins, whilst 10 or 12 free spins will be given for four or five scatter symbols, respectively. Hitting further scatters during the bonus round will add one extra spin per scatter to your remaining counter.
Before your free spins feature begins, you will be presented with the bonus wheel. This wheel can add one or more free spin modifiers to your bonus, such as 2-4 additional free spins, a 2x or 3x multiplier, or the removal of low-paying symbols from the reel set.
Upsizer Feature
There isn’t a traditional bonus buy feature in the Aquanauts online slot, but Alchemy Gaming has included a unique Upsizer feature which allows you to purchase the modifiers on the bonus wheel for a calculated cost that depends on which features you already won organically. It’s an interesting take on the bonus buy concept that works well, but we can’t give you any indication of the cost to buy the extra features as it changes drastically depending on the current situation.
Aquanauts Slot Review Final Thoughts
I wasn’t sure what to make of Aquanauts at first – the numbers on the paytable seemed extremely low, and I wasn’t having much luck hitting wins in the base game either. After a bit of time, however, I started to get a feel for the game and moved into a solid profit on my starting balance. The unusual theme helps make Aquanauts feel like an original experience, and I believe that should be enough to convince players to give it a try.
