Some of my favourite online slots use an undersea theme, so I was looking forward to checking out this Aquatic Treasures from Microgaming – one of the most reliable developers in the business. It’s certainly a pretty game, with a dark underwater backdrop and reels separated by bubbles floating up to the surface. There are 20 fixed pay lines, a 96.03% RTP, and no winnings cap that I could find. A pretty average start, then, so how about the feature set?
First of all, the wild symbol is an expanding symbol that will fill the entire reel where it lands, and even larger wilds will be created if multiple wilds land on adjacent reels. The wilds only appear on reels two through four, so you won’t be seeing any full screens of them, unfortunately! Aside from that, we have a free spins bonus round, but the paytable doesn’t make mention of any special mods or enhancements in that part of the game. We’ll find out of Microgaming has just neglected to mention anything soon!

Aquatic Treasures Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Games set under the ocean are usually filled with ocean creatures, but for some reason, Microgaming has opted for diamond symbols in this game. The wild is a beautiful looking dolphin, however, and the scatter symbol features two dolphins circling a pearl … If you want to play a game with a stricter ocean feel, then give Playtech’s Great Blue a go – it’s been improved dramatically since it was first released too, and now has a much higher RTP.
We’re talking about Microgaming today, however, so let’s check out the paytable of their Aquatic Treasures online slot! The purple diamond sits at the top of the paytable with a return of 37.5x your bet for each completed five-of-a-kind payline. The green diamond is worth 25x your bet for all five, whilst the blue one pays 20x for each full pay line. That’s it for the “high-paying” symbols – just the three – yet there are five lower-paying royal symbols on the paytable. I don’t know about you, but that feels a little unfair, especially considering we don’t have any stacked symbols here. The expanding wilds somewhat make up for the disparity, but as I was testing this game, I got a lot of blank spins when no wilds showed up to boost my chances.
As for the betting options, you can play from as little as €0.20 per round up to a maximum of €100.00, but I’m not sure who would want to bet that much on a game such as this.
Base Game & Modifiers
Base gameplay pans out just as you would expect – the game uses a 5×3 playfield with 20 fixed paylines, with the usual three or more symbols required to bag some winnings. There is one strange quirk: the scatter symbols only trigger a bonus round when they appear on reels one, two, and three, but you do at least receive some additional cash if you hit more than four or five of them when triggering a feature.
You don’t need to catch the bonus symbols on a payline to trigger the feature, thankfully – I hate it when games do that! One minor annoyance, though – the game will still expand wild symbols that appear on the later reels, even when they will not create a win after expanding. This is a waste of time that quickly becomes tiring during an extended session.
Aquatic Treasures Slot Bonus Features
The only real special feature of Aquatic Treasures is the free spins feature, and you will need to hit a bonus symbol on reels one, two, and three to trigger it. Three bonus symbols on any other reels aren’t good enough, sadly, but you will at least receive a cash prize of 2x or 5x if you happen to hit three or four scatters on another combination of reels. It isn’t much of a consolation prize, but it’s better than nothing.
Hitting the three bonus symbols on the first three reels will award eight free spins. I was hoping the game would have some special features in this mode, but as far as I can tell, it plays exactly the same as the base game, which is quite disappointing. Worse still, the wilds felt as if they showed up less often during the bonus round in my testing, although this could just be bad luck – I only managed to hit four features despite playing the game for a long time whilst I was writing this review.
Aquatic Treasures Slot Review Final Thoughts
It’s rare that I find a Microgaming slot disappointing, but Aquatic Treasures is one such game. Sure, you may be able to win a decent amount if you can hit wilds on all three middle reels simultaneously, but that combination just doesn’t show up very often, and the feature isn’t much to look forward to either. Sadly, I struggle to recommend this one.
