Astros (Red Tiger Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

Today’s slot review is refreshingly different from the norm, and it might take some getting used to based on my first impressions, but variety is the spice of life and all that, so let’s see what Red Tiger has concocted her. The game is titled Astros, and it’s a high volatility slot, with a not-so-great RTP of 91.70% but a potentially lucrative maximum win of 25,900x.

The slot action takes place on an unconventional grid built in the shape of a pyramid and comprised of five levels. The base level is where you’ll start on any spin, and to move up to the next level, a minimum of three of the same cash values will need to be matched. Continue to match three values on each level, and you’ll climb to the pyramid’s peak, where a 5,000x prize value awaits. Each level also features an improved multiplier value, which will be applied to the relevant cash value awarded at that stage. Additionally, there are bonus scatter symbols to hunt for on level three of the pyramid; land one of these, and the seven prizes feature will be activated, which awards seven random cash prize values.

Do you fancy exploring this cash filled pyramid? It’s an interesting place to visit, and there’s no chance of bumping into an undead mummy here. Why not load up the Astros demo slot? It’s available to play free of charge below!

Astros Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Astros Paytable
Astros paytable

The Egyptian-themed format is a well-known and loved concept across the slot universe, with almost all providers featuring several within their catalogues. Let’s check out a couple of the best examples currently available. First up, we have Book of Dead. I can’t mention Egyptian games without giving a nod to this absolute classic from Play n Go. It’s a high volatility, 5×3 reel slot where expanding symbols can produce a max win of 5,000x bet. Or something that I’ve enjoyed spending a lot of time spinning way on more recently is Golden Scrolls from provider Slotsmill, which features both a standard and super variant of the free spins bonus and is packed with multiplier expanding wilds. It’s certainly worth checking out in my view. Next, we’ll take a deeper dive into the features of Astros, starting with the pays section.

Things are slightly different over at the paytable compared to many slots, as there are no fancy symbols to look at; instead, we have cash values. There are 10 in total, and you’ll need to match at least three to be paid. The full list is 0.1x, 0.2x, 0.3x, 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, 20x, and 100x your current total stake value.

Regarding the stake options, there are nine on offer in total, but things are very limited at the top end. The possible selections range from a low of €0.20 to a high of €8.00, with gradual increments in between. This range will be more than suitable for most, but higher rollers may not find the max stake a little limiting.

Astros Slot Base Game

Astros Base Game

Now, over to the game mechanics. We can see that Astros operates on an unusual pyramid-shaped grid, which is comprised of five levels. The base level has seven rows; then it builds to six, five, four, and finally, three-row positions at the top level. All spins start at the base level, and if three or more matching values are landed, the relevant prize will be paid, and the action will move up to the next level.

Each level has a multiplier value attached other than the base level. But move up, and you’ll encounter x2, x5, x10, and x50 at the final level. These multipliers will be applied to any matching cash value won at the respective level. However, to continue moving up the levels, at least three further matching values will need to land; otherwise, the spin will end. Manage to reach the fifth and final level of the pyramid and match three of the values you are working with in the three row positions available, then you will be awarded a prize of 5,000x for your current stake selection.

Wild Symbols

During any spin, it is possible for wild symbols to land. These symbols will substitute for any cash value, counting as the third required matching symbol if only two of the same have landed and will move you up to the next level.

Astros Slot Bonus Features

On the third pyramid level, the seven prizes feature is available. You will need to land at least one scatter symbol here to trigger it, whereas two scatters will double the prizes, and three will automatically award a prize of 5,000x of the current bet.

Seven Prizes

When activated, the seven prizes feature will cause bet multiplier prize symbols to be shuffled on seven positions, with a random prize landing on any position and the overall amount accumulated by the seven prizes to be paid out as a win. The possible prizes that may land in each of the seven positions are 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, 20x, and 100x.

Pros

  • Respectable 25,900x max win and opportunity to win 5,000x stake value by reaching the top of the pyramid.
  • It is a refreshingly different concept to enjoy.

Cons

  • Low RTP.
  • It can feel like you are stuck on the lower levels for an eternity.

Astros Slot Review Final Thoughts

You have to hand it to Red Tiger; this is certainly different. Is it a concept that is going to change the slotting landscape? Probably not, and the low RTP certainly hasn’t done this game any favours. But the top end potential is definitely there, and I like the challenge of striving to hit the summit of the pyramid for that 5,000x prize. How often that will happen remains to be seen, though, and I spent much of my time during testing of this game frustratingly languishing at the bottom couple of levels. However, the seven prizes feature located at the third level is a more realistic aiming point, and it's nice to see that the big prizes can also be potentially won there. Overall, points for originality, but nothing exceptional to be seen here.
