Game Overview
Today, Red Tiger continues the latest string of high-quality Megaways online slots with another Roman Empire-themed game: Athens Megaways. Athens does away with the horizontal top row common to many Megaways designs, instead opting to use six reels of up to seven positions each to make up the usual quota of 117,649 Megaways. The RTP is just a tad below the industry average at 95.68%, whilst the maximum win is capped at 19,992x bet.
Athens Megaways includes three modifiers which are also the basis of its three bonus rounds. The first of these is labelled the “soul pit” and will add wild symbols to the middle four reels each time it activates. The second modifier is named after Poseiden, who will send his mighty steeds to appear as stacked wilds – again, on the middle four reels only. The final special feature is based around Zeus, who throws lightning bolts at the reels, creating multipliers.
I’ve been playing this one far too much over the past 24 hours – this is a really entertaining little game! Why not fire up our free demo slot of Athens Megaways and try it yourself?
Athens Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I’m not sure when the craze of Roman Empire-themed online slots first began, but the number of such games has been increasing during the past decade. Playtech may have been responsible for kickstarting a fresh wave of Roman slots – when they lost the license to produce Marvel-themed games a few years back, the company decided to re-skin the entire range and re-release the games under the banner Age of the Gods. More recently, slots such as 4 Corners of Rome use the theme much more obviously, and I guess these games must be popular as the developers keep on creating so many of them!
We all know that the numbers on the paytable don’t tell the whole story regarding how much you can win from a Megaways machine. This is an inevitable consequence of these games’ ability to divide their reels into 117,649 payways. The highest-paying symbol in Athens Megaways is the soldiers’ helmet, paying 3x your bet for a full pay line of six-of-a-kind. The shield is next and has a payout of 2x your bet for all six, followed by a horse-shaped horn at 1.4x, a jug at 1.2x, and finally, a harp at 1x your bet for each completed payway. The “Royal” symbols make use of the period-correct alphabet, with symbols such as Omega and Theta, which is a nice touch.
Red Tiger often limits the betting range offered by their slots to a sensibly small range, but the developer decided there was no need for such caution this time around – the minimum bet is €0.10, whilst the maximum is €100.00 per spin.
Base Game & Modifiers
Most of us have experience with at least one Megaways slot by now; many of us have probably played at least a dozen. You may even be a complete Megaways fanatic who has tried every single of these games – I’m told that such people most certainly exist, and they would be a good candidate of person to be reading this!
The base game of Athens Megaways should feel immediately familiar, even if you haven’t played a Megaways game before! It’s a six-reel game, with each of the six reels randomly dividing into between two and seven segments on each spin. Each unique configuration of reel segments will result in a different number of payways, displayed at the top of the screen directly underneath the game’s logo. There are three modifiers which can trigger randomly on any base game spin.
Soul Pit Modifier
The soul pit modifier will cause a random number of wilds to be added to the middle four reels. These wilds can be of any height, and you may end up with one on each of the four reels or a full stack on one and nothing on another – it’s completely random. Unsurprisingly, my results from this one were mixed, sometimes paying huge amounts whilst other times returning less than my bet.
Poseidon Modifier
When Poseidon sends his horses up from below the depths, they will sometimes take up residence on the all-important centre four reels. I only ever got a single full stack of wilds during my testing of the game, and I was starting to think that was all this modifier was capable of awarding – the paytable says different, however, and it is possible to get four stacks if you are fortunate!
Zeus Modifier
Finally, the “mighty, generous” Zeus will sometimes appear and throw lightning at the reels, causing a multiplier to be applied to all winnings awarded from the current spin. During the base game, I saw multipliers of up to 8x applied to my winnings, but the numbers seemed smaller during the bonus round.
Athens Megaways Slot Bonus Features
Speaking of bonus rounds, Athens includes just one bonus round triggered whenever three scatters appear anywhere on the reels. You will then be asked to choose one of three temples to determine which of the three base game modifiers will be activated during the free spins.
Free Spins
As far as I can tell, this feature only ever awards eight free spins, and the bonus round can also not be re-triggered. The modifier you choose before the feature begins will activate randomly during the free spins; it will not trigger on every spin, but the odds seem to be more than 50% in your favour of the modifier occurring on each spin.
Athens Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts
This is a solid game that deserves to be a success for Red Tiger. Developers can sometimes be lazy with coming up with new ideas for their Megaways games, but there is plenty of unique elements, and features on offer here to interest even seasoned Megaways players. Recommended!
