Game Overview
Game provider Pragmatic Play has been steadily increasing its profile for years now, and today they are one of the biggest and best developers of online slots out there. That’s quite a turnaround considering their history – a topic for another day – but I have a tonne of respect for these guys and the effort they have put into creating fantastic top-tier online slots these past few years. Aztec Blaze is a 25 fixed payline machine with a 96.50% RTP – that’s a generous percentage but is slightly offset by the lower-than-average maximum winnings cap of only 2,000x your bet. Despite this, the developer still rates this slot game as a maximum volatility machine.
There’s another surprise waiting for you regarding the feature set – this game only needs two scatter symbols to trigger a bonus round, so you can expect to see the free spins feature occur much more frequently than in most other games. The base game has a relatively unique modifier, too – any winning spin will trigger an automatic re-spin with “colossal symbols”, which are full-height symbols that grow with every consecutive winning combination. These are all great twists and are exactly what I’ve come to expect from Pragmatic Play; these guys can always be trusted to come up with new and innovative features!
But don’t just take my word for it – you can give our free demo slot of Aztec Blaze a few spins for yourself. This practice play mode is available for you to access on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
Aztec Blaze Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
So, another Aztec-themed slot, then? The Mayan and Aztec civilisations present a wealth of inspiration for game developers. There were many slots based around these cultures years before a certain NetEnt game caused a literal explosion of such games. I’m referring to Gonzo’s Quest, of course, which was a fantastic slot, don’t get me wrong, but I didn’t ever quite understand how it became as big as it did. Let’s face it, most of us pick our favourite machines based on how generous they have been to us in the past, and I guess Gonzo just hasn’t been kind enough to me to deserve my blessings. Could Aztec Blaze be a different story? Let’s examine the paytable and find out!
Argh, another game with seemingly indescribable picture symbols… I love that, don’t you? We have a ummm… red bird with flaming eyes – a Phoenix, perhaps? That will pay you 8x your bet for a full pay line of six-of-a-kind, followed by a pretty nasty looking frog at 6x, a blue Spiky thing at 4x, and some sort of purple head with glowing red eyes (a Bitcoin fan, perhaps?) who also pays 4x your stake for all six of his symbols on a line. Four royals complete the lower half of the paytable, but the returns for those symbols are frankly not even worth mentioning. These payouts sound very small, but as we will soon be discussing, the colossal symbol feature adds a multiplier of up to 10x to these wins.
The usual Pragmatic Play wager selection setup is all present and correct here – either use the plus and minus buttons to control your wager or change the coin value and number of coins for more granular control over the total bet. These options give you minimum and maximum wagers of €0.25 and €125.00 per round – more than enough for anybody, I’d say!
Base Game & Modifiers
The large 6×4 playfield could have just been used as a standard reel set, but Pragmatic Play was having none of that! There are 25 fixed paylines spanning the grid, but the real pull of this game is the colossal symbols and the multipliers they employ.
Colossal Symbols Modifier
All wins will trigger a free re-spin with colossal symbols during the base game. The size and number of these symbols will increase with every consecutive win, and further re-spins will continue to be awarded as long as a new win appears after each spin.
At level one, colossal symbols of 2×2 positions will randomly appear on reels two through five, whereas level two increases this to 3×3 positions per symbol. After your third consecutive win, you will start to see 4×4 colossal symbols with a multiplier of 2x. Keep on winning, and things keep improving – the multiplier will continue increasing up to a maximum of 10x with guaranteed colossal symbols on every subsequent spin.
Aztec Blaze Slot Bonus Features
The free spins bonus round is a little unique, as it works similarly to the re-spin modifier in the base game. This is most likely the reason why you only require two scatter symbols to trigger the bonus round.
You start your feature with five lives, meaning you can afford five dead spins before your bonus terminates. Additionally, the level boosts from the regular re-spin feature are maintained even after a dead spin in this mode. I even managed to reach the 10x multiplier on two occasions – albeit on my very last spin!
The paytable mentions that you can retrigger this feature by hitting two more scatters during the bonus round. However, I never managed this during my game testing. This would be truly fantastic though if you manage to build up to a 10x multiplier and then score a couple of retriggers – I suspect that will be the way to get yourself up to the 2,000x jackpot.
Bonus Buy Feature
You can buy yourself a free spin feature for the low price of 60x your regular stake. As a separate option, you can purchase an “extra life” for the regular re-spin modifier, but at a cost of double the regular spin price, this one may be a bit rich for my blood.
Aztec Blaze Slot Review Final Thoughts
I’m quite shocked at just how lucky I got whilst testing this machine – I can’t wait to give it a try in real money mode as soon as it goes on general release. The free re-spin is an interesting alternative to the “rolling reels” system used by so many other slots, and it’s a credit to Pragmatic Play that they devised this system rather than just using the same old, tired mechanics.
