Aztec Wilds Megaways Slot (Iron Dog Studio) Slot Demo & Review

Not so long ago, I’d go through something of a routine each time I opened a new Megaways game where I’d hold my breath as I waited to find out if it would be a generic Bonanza clone or something much more exciting. More recently, it suddenly occurred to me that I’d forgotten all about that silly ritual; Megaways slots have entered a new era now, where the clones used to be the majority, but they are now, without question, the exception to the rule. Iron Dogs latest contribution to the format Aztec Wilds Megaways still has up to 117,649 possible Megaways, so I’m sure there will be at least some similarities. The RTP stands at 95.82% unless you use the bonus buy feature, which increases this to 96.3%. The maximum jackpot per round is fixed at 12,000x your bet.

A brief feature summary mentions wild symbols, sticky wilds, spreading Aztec wilds, multiplier symbols, tumbling reels, and an incremental multiplier free spins feature; these all sound more than a little familiar, so I’m very much hoping that there are a few surprises to be found along the way too.

I’ve talked a little about the Mayan civilisation when discussing slots here at Demoslot, but so far, I don’t believe I’ve gone into much detail regarding the Aztecs. Don’t worry – this isn’t going to be an essay! If you want the full story, read the excellent Wikipedia page, which discusses the Aztec people, as you’re sure to learn a lot! The short version is that the Aztec civilisation and culture flourished in modern day Mexico between 1300 and 1521 and included several ethnic groups – I guess racism must have been a modern-day invention. They spoke a language known as Nahuatl. Unfortunately, the arrival of Europeans on the continent spelt disaster for the Aztecs, and their population was decimated by the arrival of several viruses to which they had zero immunity.

Back on topic now, the red totem is the highest-paying symbol with an impressive payout of 100x your stake for a full payline of six-of-a-kind. If you disagree about this being an impressive payout, keep in mind that this is a Megaways slot – you don’t need too many six-of-a-kind payways of this symbol to win a chunky reward! The blue totem is worth 70x your bet for all five, whilst the green snake will pay you 50x, and the blue bird-shaped totem is worth 30x. The green crocodile-themed totem is worth 25x your bet for six-of-a-kind, whilst the yellow one will net you 20x for every completed pay way. The returns for the five royal symbols are slightly less impressive, of course, but 15x for the Ace and the King still isn’t bad, whilst 6x for the remaining royals may keep your balance topped up whilst you wait for something better to drop.

As far as the wagering options are concerned, the lowest bet permitted is just €0.10, perfect for those with small bankrolls, whilst the maximum of €50.00 per spin should be more than enough for Megaways-loving high rollers.

Base Game & Modifiers

Play With Up To 117,649 Ways To Win In Aztec Wilds Megaways Slot From Iron Dog Studio

Aztec Wild Megaways does away with the horizontal row featured in many Megaways games, instead opting for up to seven rows on each of the game’s six reels. The reels look a little cluttered to my eyes, as the wide variety of different symbols doesn’t look coherent, especially when you have seven rows on all six reels. All winning combinations require at least three matching symbols starting from the left.

Normal Wilds

The regular wild symbols appear on all reels apart from reel one, so there is no chance of landing a full payway of wilds, unfortunately. This shouldn’t bother you too much, however, as even a single wild on all five of the other reels will guarantee lots of wins on many pay ways simultaneously. During the bonus round, these symbols can also have a multiplier attached to them.

Sticky Wilds

These enhanced wild symbols appear exclusively during the free spin bonus and can only land on reels two, three, and four. Sticky wilds always have a 1x multiplier at the beginning of each free spin, which increases by 1x each time a winning combination is removed from the playfield. Unfortunately, sticky wilds lose their multiplier at the end of each free spin but remain in place for the duration of the feature.

Aztec Wilds

Finally, these uber-wild symbols appear on reels three and four only but can at least land in both the base game and bonus round. Each time an Aztec Wild appears, it will spawn further wild symbols on reels two, three, four, and five, making these symbols extremely valuable.

During the base game, Aztec Wilds will transform any currently visible regular wilds into Aztec Wilds. During the bonus round, the Aztec Wild will only transform existing wilds that do not already possess a multiplier.

Aztec Wilds Megaways Slot Bonus Features

Hit Four Reel Cascades In A Row To Trigger The Free Spins Feature On Aztec Wilds Megaways

There are no scatter symbols in Aztec Wilds Megaways, so you will need to win four consecutive times in a row to reach the bonus round. Ready to find out more about the main feature? Then read on below.

Free Spins

Aztec Wilds occur more frequently during this mode, making it much easier to win several times consecutively. This is useful, as hitting four consecutive wins during the free spins feature will add two free spins to your remaining counter.

Better yet, if you are unlucky enough to suffer four dead spins in a row, the game will take pity on you and add another two free spins to your remaining counter anyway! This is a neat feature and will continue adding extra free spins to your remaining total if you continue hitting further dead spins after your two bonus spins are awarded.

Bonus Buy

There are two free spin options available on the bonus buy menu; the first will cost you 85x the regular stake for eight free spins, whilst the second costs 115x for ten free spins. I guess the reason for the large increase over just two spins probably comes down to the sticky wilds, as we all know how valuable these can be, especially when multipliers are involved!

Aztec Wilds Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts

After reading the feature list, I wasn’t sure if, but I needn’t have worried! This is an innovative take on the Megaways formula, and whilst it isn’t my favourite game to use the mechanic, I certainly enjoyed testing the game for this review. Megaways fans are sure to love it.
