Game Overview
I’ve reviewed so many Wild West-themed slots that it got to the point that I walk bow-legged, constantly spit, tip my hat to strangers, and instinctively reach for a six-shooter every time I hear the bell ring for last orders at my local pub. I’ve become a dab hand at poker when playing against my mates, though; they all seem to fold when I give them the Eastwood eye squint. Attempted jokes aside, it is an overly common theme, as evidenced by my latest slot review of Pragmatic Play’s Badge Blitz, a 5×3 slot with 25 paylines, a 96.5% RTP, and 3,000x the stake maximum win.
Judging by the base game alone, you’d probably conclude Badge Blitz is a simple, no-thrills slot. However, it does have a couple of bonus games to strive for, one is a free spins bonus with two full wild reels delivered on every spin, and the second is a fun, if unspectacular, Hold & Win bonus that rewards coin prizes worth up to 16x the stake, and four jackpots, the best of which is worth 1,000x.
While the maximum win is a major letdown, the rest of this slot doesn’t sound too bad, right? It’s at least worth a try, and it’s something you can do via the Badge Blitz slot demo below.
theme, stakes, pays & symbols
There’s more chance of winning the lottery than scrolling through the lobby at a popular online casino and not finding a wild-west-themed slot, and it’s a genre of online slot that looks like it’ll never go away. Even recently, we’ve seen the release of BGaming’s Train to Rio Grande, which’s themed on outlaws attempting to do a train heist, while the developer also launched Wild West Trueways a few weeks back. Other recent Western slot releases include Hacksaw Gaming’s Old Gun and Nolimit City’s Tombstone R.I.P.
As for the payouts on the Badge Blitz slot, the Sheriff is the top dog with a maximum return of 8x the stake for five across a payline. The Money Bag, Horse and Cart, and Holseter all share a max win of 4x, while the Cowboy Hat rewards up to 4x. The Ace and King both deliver a top return of 3x, and the Queen and Jack top out at 2x.
The minimum/maximum permitted wagers in Badge Blitz are €0.25 and €250.00 per spin, respectively. Although this presents players with an extensive choice of staking options, it might be a little disappointing for low rollers who find the €0.25 a little too rich for their liking.
Base Game & Modifiers
Situated bang in the middle of a typical dusty Wild West town, the gaming matrix features five reels, three rows, and 25 fixed paylines. Wins are calculated and paid when two or more of the Sheriff or three or more of all other symbols land across a payline from left to right. Wilds can aid the completion of winning combinations by substituting for all regular-paying symbols, which can land on all reels except the first.
Badge Blitz slot bonus features
Aside from those wild symbols, there are no features to speak of in the base game, so the less said about that, the better. However, you do have a couple of bonus games to aim for. There is a free spins bonus game and a Hold & Win style money collect game.
Free Spins Feature
If you land three or four scatter symbols on reels two, three, and four, you’ll receive five or eight free spins, respectively. Two reels on every spin are guaranteed to be fully wild during this bonus. It’s also possible to trigger the money Re-Spin feature below from within, and when that happens, that bonus is played out before you’re taken back to finish off your remaining spins.
Money Respin Feature
The Money Re-Spin feature triggers when six or more of the Badge Symbols appear anywhere in view following a base game spin. Only the following symbols can land during this bonus:
- Coin Symbols holding cash values as a multiplier of the stake ranging from 0.8x and 16x.
- The Mini (10x), Minor (50x), Major (100x) or Mega (250x) Jackpot Symbols.
- Badges that collect the values of all coins before becoming a coin holding that combined value.
- Blanks that reward nothing.
All triggering badge symbols carry over and are transformed into random coin symbols. You then receive 3 re-spins, which reset any time coins, badges, or jackpot icons land. The bonus will end in two ways:
- You run out of re-spins and are awarded the total sum of all coin and jackpot symbols on the reels.
- You fill all positions with special symbols and win the 1,000x the stake Grand Prize jackpot.
Bonus Buy
Surprisingly, you cannot purchase the free spins bonus outright. However, for 100x the stake, you can buy the Money Re-Spin feature.
Pros
- There are two bonus games, something I didn't expect to see if I’m honest.
Cons
- The 3,000x maximum win is well below what you’d expect from modern slots.
Badge Blitz Slot Review Final Thought
I cannot foresee myself playing this slot very often, but it isn't one I’ll go out of my way to avoid. The big downside is the 3,000x maximum win. It’s not 1875 any more, chaps; slots these days can have maximum payouts of upwards of 100,000x. If you can look past that, however, the slot offers a couple of decent bonus games.
