Banquet Of Dead (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

There’s a good reason so many online casinos use Play’n Go’s legendary Book of Dead slot for their welcome bonuses. It’s because the slot is one of the best and most popular online slot games ever released. If you want to pull in the punters, you give them free spins on something that will hook them in due to the high variance, good graphics, engaging gameplay, and significant potential payouts, not some spins on a 3-reel, 1-payline classic slot from years gone by. Today, I’m reviewing the latest of a very long line of spin-offs of that legendary slot, and it certainly has some majorly big boots to fill. The slot in question is Banquet of Dead, which offers the same 5-reel, 3-row, and 10-payline reel configuration, but this time a max win of 35,000x the stake and a 96% RTP.

I can see the eyes of Book of Dead fanboys popping out as I speak (write); the max win is seven times bigger than the 5,000x of the original. However, does that guarantee Banquet of Dead becomes the successor to the thrown? You’ll have to read on to find out, as there are also a few other differences. The scatter/wild symbol is still there, and the legendary free spins round with an expanding symbol also returns, although with differences from the first slot.

If you’ve not played the original Book of Dead slot or any of the others in the series from Play’n Go, you’re either very new to slot gaming or have a hatred for all things Play’n Go. I cannot think of many other reasons why an experienced player would never have spun away on one of those games. While the original is the standout of the series, as statistics do not lie, Legacy of Dead and Scroll of Dead are two amazing slots worth checking out if you’re yet to get around to them.

Enough of the OGs of the past; this review is about the young pretender and whether it can live up to its predecessors. As we strive to find out, let’s first dive into the different reel symbols and their worth when lined up across a payline. The famous Scatter/Wild symbol is responsible for the joint best payouts, and you’ll receive 150x the stake for a completed line of five. The Cleopatra symbol also pays 150, but its payout only comes when that symbol is matched five times across a payline. That is the same for the Crocodile, Fruit Stand, and Handfan, although they’ll reward you with 120x, 90x, and 60x for a winning combo of five, respectively. The Ace is the better of the low-paying symbols with a maximum of 20x up for grabs, while the King and Queen offer equal returns of 15x, and the Jack and Ten share payouts of 10x.

When the time comes to decide your spin bet on Banquet of Dead, you’ll have several options available to you, ranging from a minimum bet of €0.10 to a maximum of €100.00. As always, with a Play’n Go slot, you can use the bet selector toggle bar at the bottom of the reels to see what other bet sizes are in play.

Banquet Of Dead Slot Base Game & Modifiers

Banquet Of Dead Slot Base Game

Banquet of Dead utilises the same 5×3 layout found in the original and many other follow-up slots in the series, and you also have the same 10 paylines to seek your fortune. You’ll pick up wins when two or more of the high-paying symbols, or three or more of the low-payers, are matched across a payline on successive reels beginning from the first reel.

Scatter/wild Symbol

Yes, the iconic scatter/wild symbol returns once more, which arguably is a necessity as you couldn’t classify a slot without one as a book slot. For those unaware of such a symbol, it performs the role of both a scatter symbol and a wild, something you probably should have picked up from the section title above. As a wild, it will substitute for all regular symbols when wins are possible, and as a scatter, it pays anywhere in view for three or more in any position and also triggers the free spins bonus.

Gamble Option

After a winning combo hits the reels, you’re given the option to gamble it for more. If you use the gamble feature, you can try to guess the colour or suit of a face-down card, which, if successive, will double or quadruple your winnings respectively. It is possible to win up to 5 times, but a word of warning, you’ll lose all your winnings if you guess incorrectly.

Banquet Of Dead Slot Bonus Features

Banquet Of Dead Slot Free Spins Feature
Banquet of Dead slot free spins feature

The pinnacle of any slot in this series of slots from Play’n Go is the free spins bonus, which once again requires at least three scatter symbols to trigger on Banquet of Dead.

Free Spins Feature

The bonus will begin with the pages of the legendary book being turned and eventually stopping on a symbol, which will be your expanding symbol for the bonus round. Across your 7 free spins, that symbol will expand to fill its reel whenever it can form a winning combination. The great thing about the expanding symbol is that it will pay from any position across all paylines, so it doesn’t matter if there are gaps between the symbols.

Now for the plot twist and where the free spins bonus works differently on Banquet of Dead. Each time the expanding symbol expands on a spin, the lowest value ‘low-paying symbol’ (the high-paying symbols remain throughout) symbol on the reels is removed. If your current expanding symbol is one of those removed, a new expanding symbol is chosen from the symbols remaining, so it is at this point that you can start to see the potential.

If you land a few expanding symbols wins during the feature, resulting in the removal of all the low-paying symbols, it will leave just the high-paying symbols for you to hunt the juicy payout. The only other thing to note about this free spins bonus is that you’ll get 3 additional free spins up to a maximum of 30 whenever 3 or more scatters land on a spin.

Pros

  • Another top Play’n Go effort in terms of graphics and animations.
  • Two bonus rounds to trigger.

Cons

  • Just half the max win of the original.

Banquet Of Dead Slot Review Final Thoughts

Of the many spin-offs and other slots in the Book of Dead series, Banquet Dead is one of the best, but it still doesn't quite hit the heights of the original in my book. The 35,000x max win sounds nice, but anyone with much slot gaming experience will know Play’n Go titles rarely hit those max wins compared to titles from other developers. Despite that, I enjoyed the symbol removal aspect of the free spins bonus Banquet of Dead, and once again, Play’n Go has nailed the visuals, so it's definitely a slot I’m going to enjoy playing for the foreseeable and with my recent review of 3 Clown Monty 2 also receiving a decent score here at Demoslot, it appears Play'n Go are again on somewhat of a role with their game development.
