Barbarossa Revenge (Peter & Sons) Slot Demo & Review

There are not many slot collaborations between two studios that I’d happily label as a match made in heaven, but one I have no trouble using that phrase for is the hook-up between Yggdrasil and Peter & Sons via the YG Masters program. On the one side, you have the hyper-professional and truly innovative Yggdrasil Gaming. On the other, you have Peter & Sons, an up-and-coming studio that’s equally as innovative but also a tad crazy at the same time. The two complement each other extremely well, as you’ll know if you’ve played Barbarossa DoubleMax, a slot that showcased why Peter & Sons is quickly climbing through the development ranks and the brilliance of Yggdrasil via its DoubleMax mechanic. That slot proved a big success, and as expected, that means I have a sequel to talk you through today, Barbarossa Revenge DoubleMax, a 5×3 title with 243 ways to win, a 96.3% RTP, and a sizable 30,000x the stake maximum win.

For the most part, the core gameplay has stayed pretty much the same, and rightly so. You wouldn’t want them to mess around with the main reason the first title proved so popular. That means the DoubleMax mechanic is back delivering wilds and a doubling infinity win multiplier after every winning cascades. The only noticeable differences here are that Peter & Sons has ramped up the winning potential by 50% up to 30,000x the stake and thrown in Golden Multipliers that deliver an instant cash prize on top of taking the multiplier trail to the next step.

That all sounds fantastic to me, and if you’ve played the original slot, I’d wager it sounds good to you, too. Once you’re done reading through the rest of the review, make sure to play a few spins on the Barbarossa Revenge DoubleMax slot demo below.

Barbarossa Revenge Slot
Barbarossa Revenge Slot paytable

The theme of Barbarossa Revenge DoubleMax carries on from the original, which was centred around Hayreddin Barbarossa, a man revered as one of the 16th century’s most feared Pirates. In this one, it seems he is out for revenge of some sort, and to be honest, good luck to whoever he is chasing down, as it doesn’t look like it will end well for them. I’ve played a lot of Pirate-themed slots in my time as it’s one of my favourite themes, and I enjoyed the original so much it’s in my top 3, alongside Octoplay’s Davey Bones and Hacksaw Gaming’s Cursed Seas

With the theme covered, it’s time to check in on Barbarossa Revenge DoubleMax’s paytable. At face value, none of the payouts looks great at all, but you have to remember the wild cascading and doubling multipliers that can boost wins during a spin. The Red Character tops the ranks with a 2x the stake return for five in a row, while the Pink and Gold characters reward up to 1.6x. The Green and Blue character symbols wrap up the so-called bigger pays and are the last of the premiums, with both returning up to 1x. As for the lower pays, we have the Sextant and the Pistol sharing a top return of 0.6x, with the Telescope, Map, and Cannonballs all having an equal max payout of 0.5x.

As for the staking options, you’ll find 17 of them ranging from the minimum supported bet per spin of €0.20 to the maximum of €50.00. The top end of that range could be higher, but for pretty much every casual slot player out there, this will prove to be more than adequate.

Base Game & Modifiers

Barbarossa Revenge Slot
Barbarossa Revenge Slot base game

While the 5-reel and 3-row reel configuration might give off the impression there’s not going to be a lot going on when playing the Barbarossa Revenge DoubleMax slot, the reality is the opposite. For a start, in the base game, there are cascades with multipliers that can double indefinitely, while wild symbols also play a big part as well. Across that reel setup are 243 ways to win, meaning you’ll receive payouts whenever three or more matching symbols land on consecutive reels starting from the left and moving right.

Wild Cascasdes & Doublemax Multipliers

Winning combinations are removed from the reels, leading to a cascade of new symbols dropping in from above. However, after each win, one of the vacant positions is filled with a wild symbol to enhance the chances of another combo forming.

Furthermore, Yggdrasil’s popular DoubleMax mechanic kicks in after each winning cascade as well. Below the reels, you’ll see a Multiplier trail, which increases should the winning combos fall in one after another. Each winning cascade doubles the win multiplier up to an unlimited number, while it is also possible to trigger JumpUps or Golden Multipliers.

  • JumpUps: If the multiplier trail reaches a glowing ball that is cracked, there is a chance that it will cause the multiplier trail to increase up to three levels.
  • Golden Multipliers: When these are met along the multiplier trail, they guarantee an instant win as a multiplier of the current stake.

Barbarossa slot bonus features

Barbarossa Revenge Slot free spins feature

Those wild cascades, the DoubleMax mechanic, and doubling multipliers continue in the free spins round, which triggers once three or more scatter symbols land anywhere in view. In return for three scatters, you receive 7 free spins, but should any additional land on the triggering spin; you’ll get an extra 2 spins for each.

Free Spins Feature

The free spins play out almost identically to the base game spins, except for one key difference – the multipliers do not reset between spins. That means the multipliers will carry across and continue growing throughout the bonus game.

Bonus Buy

You have two bonus buy options to consider on Barbarossa Revenge DoubleMax:

  • You can purchase 7 free spins for 100x the current stake
  • Alternatively, you can go big by buying a random number of between 7 and 10 spins for 200x.

Pros

  • The maximum win has been ramped up to 30,000x the stake.
  • More of what makes the DoubleMax mechanic so popular.
  • Above average RTP.

Cons

  • It can be infuriating to hit strings on dead spins if the multiplier gets to a high level.

Barbarossa Revenge Slot Review Final Thoughts

Fans of the original will love what Peter & Sons have created here, although there isn't a huge difference between the two. Just think of Barbarossa Revenge DoubleMax as a suped-up version of the first title, which is something I doubt there will be many complaints about. I personally loved it, and I’m not the easiest slot player to please at the best of times.
