Ben Gunn Robinson Slot (Mascot Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

Hmmm… a guy named Robinson trapped on a desert island? I’m sure I’ve heard a story like that before! Ben Gunn Robinson from Mascot Games is a medium-volatility online slot with a couple of interesting features. The machine uses ten paylines, effectively doubled because the game pays in both directions. There’s no maximum winnings cap mentioned anywhere within the game, but the highest win achievable via the paytable is only 500x – I guess it could be theoretically possible to hit that more than once in a session, although that seems quite unlikely! The RTP of 95.06% is somewhat below average too, but thankfully the difference is not significant enough to warrant the game being unworthy of recommendation.

Aside from the pays-both-ways payout mechanic, Ben Gunn Robinson also offers a 100% RTP gamble feature that allows players to double up their winnings multiple times. Wilds are present on all five reels, whilst the bonus-triggering scatters only appear on reels one, three, and five. After making it to the bonus round, you’ll have the opportunity to collect pieces of a treasure map which, if found, take you to a ‘super bonus’ where you can potentially find a multiplier for your bonus round winnings.

If you’ve ever fancied yourself as a modern-day Robinson Crusoe, this is probably the right game for you! We have a free demo slot of Ben Gunn Robinson available to play below.

Ben Gunn Robinson Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Ben Gunn Robinson Slot Paytable

Pirates, treasure maps, and islands loaded with booty – it all sounds like the perfect backdrop for an online slot, which probably explains why so many developers have used this theme over the years. We looked at Red Tiger’s Amazon Island Megaways a while back, along with Playtech’s Captain’s Quest Treasure Island a little more recently. Both of those games have a very different feel to Ben Gunn Robinson, however, and they also have incredibly high variance compared to this release. The graphics are well-drawn, and the overall theme and presentation seem on par with other high-quality modern online slots.

The most valuable symbol on the paytable is the seagull, which offers a maximum payout of 500x the total bet. I had to zoom in to ensure I was seeing the next symbol correctly – it’s a fish, but for some reason, he’s lying on a leaf! Perhaps he’s for dinner? Either way, he’ll pay you 200x your bet for all five symbols. The remaining symbols are a little less impressive. There’s another fish worth 50x for a complete payline, followed by a crab at 20x, a coconut at 10x, a banana at 5x, a pineapple at 2x, and finally, a poor little sea turtle with a prize of just 1x the bet for all five of his symbols. I wonder what he did wrong to end up being placed behind all of the fruit-based symbols.

There are only eight bets to choose from in Ben Gunn Robinson, which feels somewhat restrictive given the minimum/maximum bets of €0.20 and €50.00 per spin, respectively. As ever, those who want to bet towards the upper end of the range are most likely to be constrained by this limitation.

Base Game & Modifiers

Ben Gunn Robinson Slot Base Game

As far as the gameplay is concerned, Ben Gunn Robinson sticks to the traditional video slot formula in most ways. For example, the game uses a typical five-reel, three-row layout, and the ten fixed paylines are also very common on a grid of this size. The game does pay in both directions, however, which is a little more unusual – this means that your payline can start from either the first or fifth reel, but you’ll still need three symbols on adjacent reels to score yourself a win.

Gamble Feature

The gamble feature allows players to risk their winnings for the chance of doubling up. This is done via a highest-card game with a 100% RTP – it’s 50/50 whether you will win, but there’s no way to put aside any of your winnings, so everything will be lost if you turn over a lower card.

Ben Gunn Robinson Slot Bonus Features

The bonus scatter symbols only appear on reels one, three, and five, and you’ll need all three of them to trigger the feature. Unfortunately, there is no cash prize attached to these symbols.

Bonus Game

Most online slots offer free spins of some kind as their main bonus round, but Mascot has gone for an entirely different feature where you are given five picks out of eight possible locations presented on a map. Each location can hide a prize between 1x and 50x the total bet, but there is also a ‘MISS’ symbol that will immediately end the bonus and return you to the main game.

Super Bonus Game

Whilst picking locations in the regular bonus game, it’s possible to find pieces of a key used to access the super bonus round. You need five pieces to get here though, meaning you’ll have to find one on every pick. If you are lucky enough to make it to the super bonus, you’ll be offered a choice of two chests – one of these holds a multiplier that will be applied to your bonus game winnings if found.

Pros

  • Great payouts for the highest regular symbols on the paytable.
  • Pays-both-ways mechanic makes wins more frequent than other ten-line games.
  • You won’t make it to the super bonus often, but it’s always a nice treat when you do!

Cons

  • The RTP is almost a full percent below average, affecting how much playtime you get for a given bankroll.
  • Whilst the 500x payout for the top symbol is undeniably generous, it’s a shame that there doesn’t seem to be any way to win more than that.

Final Thoughts

Whenever I think of low volatility slots with a 500x maximum win, my mind always seems to jump to NetEnt’s Starburst. That game was hugely popular despite lacking any of the special features that Mascot has included here, and I would describe this as another game that should appeal to fans of lower-variance machines. Ben Gunn Robinson is also a good pick if you are trying to clear a bonus wagering requirement.
