Big Bass Day At The Races (Pragmatic Play) Slot Demo & Review

People have some strange hobbies. A quick Google search will give you the low down on some of the weirder pastimes out there, with extreme ironing, cheese rolling, and even drain cover spotting being popular pursuits. Each to their own, I say, but when Reel Kingdom and Pragmatic Play’s latest Big Bass slot, which combines fishing with horseracing, dropped into my review inbox, even I was a bit baffled. Had they become the pioneers of a new horseback fishing movement? Or am I just completely overthinking this, and it’s simply a case of Frankie the fisherman fancying a punt at his local track? Let’s get stuck in and find out. The game is called Big Bass Day at the Races, and it’s a high volatility, five-reel, three-row slot with an RTP of 96.07% and a potential maximum win of 10,000x.

It feels like the long list of titles within the Big Bass range must stretch well into double figures by this point. His latest appearance at the racetrack is a change in direction theme wise, but the familiar 5×3 grid layout with 10 fixed paylines remains. The aim of the game is also broadly similar, focusing on landing cash values on the reels at the same time as the character symbol, who will then collect them. Of course, we do have some racing inspired game features here, with a randomly activated finishing post sweeping across the screen before gathering and multiplying stray cash values in the base game and a ‘pick your fancy’ pre-bonus round where you’ll select several lucky horses that can award modifiers to provide a head start in the free spins round, whilst the added ‘lasso’ and ‘stampede’ features bring further equine themed fun to the party.

The odds would suggest that a fair few of you reading this are fans of the Big Bass series. I mean, someone must be playing them to justify this volume of releases, right? Which is your favourite? Maybe this combination of racing and fishing could tick all of your boxes. Give it a try yourself; we have the Big Bass Day at the Races demo slot available to play for free below!

It’s been almost a decade since the original Fishin’ Frenzy hit our screens, and punters seem to have been hooked on ‘fishing’ style games ever since. Big Bass Bonanza was where it all began for Pragmatic Play, and sequels have followed at regular intervals, all featuring tweaks to the theme and gameplay but staying true to the original winning formula. Some of the more recent releases are Big Bass Floats My Boat, which features increasing grid position multiplier values in its bonus game, and Big Bass Hold & Spinner Megaways, which includes up to 147,456 payways and mystery symbols. We’ll be casting our rods out a bit deeper into the features of Big Bass Day at the Races now, starting over at the pays section.

Matching a line of five will award the highest payout value for each symbol featured on the paytable, and The Champagne on Ice sits at the top, returning a huge 200x the total stake for each line of five. Next is the Picnic Hamper at 100x, followed by the Pint of Beer at 50x, and the final premium symbol, the Binoculars, which also weigh in at 50x. The non-premium symbols are the classic royals, with the Ace and King paying 10x bet, and the Queen, Jack and Ten all sharing equal returns of 5x bet for a winning combo of five.

There are an impressive number of stake options on Big Bass Day at the Races, ranging from a low of €0.10 to a high of €250.00. With so many to choose between, all players should be able to find a suitable selection here.

Big Bass fans will be familiar with the game mechanics, which are played on a five-reel grid, with three-row positions on each and 10 fixed paylines. All winning combinations are formed by matching a minimum of three corresponding symbols from left to right, commencing on the leftmost reel across any of these lines, except the champagne on ice, which will provide a small payout for two symbols.

Wild

A suited and booted Frankie fisherman character features as the Wild symbol. He only appears in the free spins bonus, where he will collect any cash value symbols that land on the screen at the same time as him and replace any pay table symbol in a winning combination.

Money Symbol

The Money Symbol can appear in both the base and bonus games and comes in the following possible values: 0.2x, 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 200x, 250x, 333x, 500x, and 1,000x.

Finishing Post Bonus

During the base game, this feature may randomly activate at the end of any spin. A finishing post will sweep across the grid, collecting any Money Symbols on the reels and multiplying their combined value by x1, x2, x3, x4, x5, x10, x20, x30, x40, or x50. The total value will then be paid as a win.

Two Scatter Feature & Lasso

In the base game, if two scatter symbols land on the grid, several re-spins may take place where the existing scatters move downwards by one position each time whilst the other reels spin, potentially landing the third scatter required to trigger the bonus. Additionally, a lasso may randomly enter the screen and transform a pay table symbol into a scatter.

Ante Bet

Flicking on the anti-bet button will raise the cost of each spin by 50% of the base stake value, increasing the chances of a bonus landing in return.

Big Bass Day At The Races Slot Bonus Features

Landing three scatter symbols on the reels during a single spin will trigger the free spins feature, awarding 10 spins. Landing 4 or 5 scatters will award an additional 1 or 2 starting modifiers, respectively. Before the main bonus round begins, players will be taken to a screen where they will be required to pick several objects and reveal modifiers that include the following:

  • Extra Spins: +1, +2, or +3 starting free spins can be revealed per pick, up to a maximum of 6.
  • Fixed Money Symbols: 1, 2, or 3 money symbols will be guaranteed to be stuck to the reels on each free spin.
  • Man Wilds: Reveal up to 3 Wilds to start the feature, which will be added to the progressive meter.
  • Low Money Symbol removal: Removes the lowest value money symbols from the reels; a maximum of 2 can be found in the pick feature.

The free spins will begin once the player uncovers the ‘and they’re off’ pick.

Free Spins Feature

During this bonus, any money symbols that land on the reels will be collected if a wild lands in the same spin. Each wild will contribute to a progressive meter, and each time four are collected, the feature will re-trigger, awarding an additional 10 free spins and an increased multiplier that is applied to all money symbol values that are collected. The levels that can be reached are detailed below:

  • Level 2, 4 Wilds Collected: x2 multiplier
  • Level 3, 8 Wilds Collected: x3 multiplier
  • Level 4, 12 Wilds Collected: x10 multiplier
  • Level 5, 16 Wilds Collected: x20 multiplier
  • Level 6, 20 Wilds Collected: x30 multiplier
  • Level 7, 24 Wilds Collected: x40 multiplier
  • Level 8, 28 Wilds Collected: x50 multiplier

Once level 8 is reached, no further re-triggers can take place. Randomly, if a wild symbol lands on the reels with no money symbols, the Stampede feature may activate, adding money symbols. The Lasso feature may also activate at any time during the bonus, dragging either money, man wild symbols, or both into view.

Bonus Buy

Players who wish to purchase the bonus feature directly can do so via the bonus buy option. This will cost 100x the current stake value and will randomly award either 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols.

Pros

  • Two bonus features to trigger.
  • Free spins seem to activate with relative frequency.

Cons

  • Below average RTP.
  • Low maximum win cap of 5,000x.

Big Bass Day At The Races Slot Review Final Thoughts

It's another Big Bass game, albeit with a different theme, which is either a bit weird or quite fun, depending on your perspective. It’s the usual sketch; the base game is not massively exciting, even though it does feature some high-value pay symbols and a horse-themed money collect and multiply aspect. However, the bonus game is very enjoyable, as it always is, especially if you can progress along the re-trigger trail. Overall, it's a solid Big Bass game to add to the collection.
