Game Overview
There’s more than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes, but you’d imagine they’ve tried them all by now at the offices of Pragmatic Play and Reel Kingdom when it comes to the Big Bass series of slots. We’re almost into the 20s now for this series, so surely there’s not much else the two can continue doing with them. Of course, I’m underestimating the two, as in reality, they will keep running with these slots, changing them up here and there with each release until demand no longer exists for them. At the end of the day, a large part of the slots community enjoys them, and I’m one of them (although only a handful of titles, mind), so who can blame them for yet another release, this time called Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe, a 5×3 slot with 10 paylines, a 96.5% RTP, and a 5,000x maximum win.
As an example of the two trying to find new angles for each release, we’re apparently fishing in Las Vegas for this one. There are many reasons to visit Vegas, primarily for its nightlife and casinos, but I’m not sure it’s ever been known for quality lakes primed for fishing. Anyway, who cares for themes? It’s the features, mechanics, and winning potential most of us look out for, and on this latest release, it’s all about a Double Down approach to the free spins bonus. Rather than the single progressive collection meter, there are now two – with each offering milestones that, once met, award additional spins and increase a win multiplier. Aside from that, it’s the same as usual; there are Fish Symbols with cash values of up to 5,000x the stake, which are collected by (free spins only) Fisherman landing on the same spin.
Fancy some fishing among the neon lights and casinos of Las Vegas? Then, prepare your rod, hooks, bait, and casino bankroll, as we have the Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe slot demo below.
theme, stakes, pays & symbols
With so many titles in the Big Bass series, you’d imagine the original is 20 years old or something. Nope, Big Bass Bonanza launched just a few years ago in 2020. That’s crazy to think about, really, as that means we’ve seen Nye on 20 other titles released since – working out at approximately 5 per year. I have to admit I enjoyed some of the earlier titles, especially Big Bass Bonanza Megaways with its 46,656 ways to win and 6x5x5x5x5x6 reel configuration, as it stood out from the rest. However, aside from a few, many feel too similar to the rest.
Next, let’s hook up with the paytable on this latest release, where sitting at the top is the Speedboat, which delivers 200x the stake for five across a payline. The Pink Flamengo is next up with a 100x top return, with the Fishing Rod and Tacklebox paying up to 50x and any five-symbol combination of the Fish Money symbols paying 20x. Last up; we hit the lower pays, where you’ll find the Ace and King sharing a 10x maximum return and the Queen, Jack, and Ten all paying up to 5x.
The betting range on the Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe is very impressive, and with minimum/maximum limits of €0.10 to €240, I think I can safely say that any of you wanting to try the game for real money will be able to find a stake you are comfortable with.
Base Game & Modifiers
Many of the Big Bass series slots have featured a 5-reel, 3-row, and 10-payline format, so it’s no surprise that reel configuration returns once more for Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe. Matching two or more top-paying symbols or three or more of the rest across a payline will result in a winning combination and a payout. Those combos must start from the leftmost reel and move along a payline on consecutive reels.
Aside from allowing you to spin in the hope of creating winning combinations or triggering the free spins bonus, the base game offers nothing of note. There are Fish Money symbols with cash prizes as a multiplier of the stake ranging between 2x and 5,000x, but as usual, you cannot win these until the free spins bonus triggers.
Ante bet
If you want to speed up the process of triggering the above free spins bonus, you can consider using the Ante Bet feature. It costs 50% on top of your stake and gives you spins with more scatter symbols on the reels.
Big Bass Vegas Double Down slot bonus features
The bonus game triggers when 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols land in view, resulting in 15, 20, or 25 free spins, respectively. If a spin reveals just 2 of the required scatters, there is a chance that a free re-spin is given or a hook pulls one onto the screen.
Free Spins Feature
For this bonus, Fisherman symbols are added to the reels, acting as both a wild symbol and a Collect. They’ll substitute for all regular symbols when they can create or improve winning combinations and will collect the values of all Fish Money symbols currently in view.
The Fishermen come in two colours, red and blue, and as each land, they’re collected into their respective progression meter (above the reels for blue and below for red). On each meter, the first three of each coloured Fisherman will award 10 additional spins and a 2x multiplier, which applies to Fish Money symbols collected by that Fisherman going forward. You also receive an additional 10 free spins for each of the second and third milestones on each meter and unlock multipliers of 3x and 10x, respectively.
There are a few random modifiers that can occur during the free spins bonus, too:
When there are Fishermen symbols but no Fish Money to collect, there’s a chance Fish symbols will appear randomly at the end of a spin or a Bazooka feature could transform all symbols on the reels into others. Furthermore, if there are Fish but no Fishermen, the Hook could reel one up.
Bonus Buy
You’re not even required to wait for the bonus if you’re willing to part with extra cash. A buy bonus feature allows you to purchase two variations of the free spins bonus:
- Regular Bonus: 100x your current spin bet buys you the regular free spins bonus.
- Super Bonus: 300x buys the bonus, but this one only requires 3 Fisherman to meet the milestones on the progressive collection meters.
Pros
- A colourful, if slightly random, theme for a fishing slot.
- The betting range will support most bankrolls.
Cons
- It still feels very similar to many other Big Bass titles.
Big Bass Vegas Double Down Deluxe Slot Review Final Thoughts
The double down aspect of the bonus game, and by that, the two Fisherman wilds and their respective progression meters, are the only things differentiating this slot from many others in the series. The question is, does having two meters to fill make any difference to the gameplay compared to the one featured normally? I’d argue probably not, and it’s just another slight twist to justify the zillionth release in this franchise. However, if you judged this slot in isolation, ignoring the many others, it’s great - but when judged as part of the whole series, it’s pretty much nothing more than the same again.
