If you have been struggling to picture the reel configuration of this game so far, then I may be able to help you out. Bompers bears an uncanny resemblance to the Puyo Puyo / Puzzle Bobble / Bust A Move series of bubble shooter video games that took off significantly during the PlayStation era. If that still means nothing to you, I guess the slot also looks a little like the Popwins games, such as Delicious Candy. Still none the wiser? Ah, how about Reactoonz? No? I give up. So how do you structure the paytable in an unconventional slot machine like this one? Actually, it isn’t quite as out of the ordinary as you might expect. Sure, all symbols appear inside bubbles, but every other aspect of the table feels strangely familiar – the payways themselves do take a little getting used to though. The highest-paying symbol of the bunch is the lucky seven, paying 10x your bet for a full payway of six of a kind. After this, there is a significant drop, with the BAR symbol returning only 3x your bet for all six symbols. The horseshoe will pay you 2x for a full payway, whilst the four-leaved clover isn’t as lucky as you may hope with its return of 1x for six-of-a-kind. The lower-paying half of the paytable consists of some standard fruits – watermelon, peach, lemon, and cherries – all of which have payouts of either 0.6x or 0.3x your bet.
The wagering range is reasonably broad, starting at €0.20 and maxing out at €100.00 per spin. It’s a shame that ELK hasn’t offered a few more intermediate bets, as there are not that many steps between the two extremes. That being said, you should still comfortably be able to find a stake to play at, but having more choice is never a bad thing, right?
Base Game & Modifiers
The base gameplay of Bompers takes a little getting used to. The paytable describes this as a six column, four rows slot, but that description only applies to the starting configuration, which has 4,096 payways. As additional rows are unlocked, the number of payways will gradually increase before topping out at 262,144.
At least three matching symbols are required to hit a win, starting from the left-hand side. The payways can be a little difficult to visualise initially, but the easiest way to work out if you have a winning combination is to see if every symbol is directly connected on one or both sides.
Shooting Star Modifier
The shooting star is a special symbol that occasionally drops onto the playfield, triggering a modifier. The shooting star always wants to move upwards on the playfield, so it will do so whenever there is a space above it. When the shooting star reaches the top of the stack, it will generate seven new symbols, including wilds and mystery bombs.
Mystery Bombs
The mystery bomb can appear as part of a regular symbol drop or be generated by the shooting star modifier. Once a mystery bomb is present on the screen, it will wait until all winning combinations have been evaluated. After this, it will explode and transform the seven adjacent surrounding symbols into one randomly chosen symbol from the paytable.
If two or more mystery bomb symbols explode simultaneously, any overlapping explosion positions are guaranteed to be filled with wild symbols.
Bompers Slot Bonus Features
The main bonus round is activated by landing three bonus symbols simultaneously during the base game. I didn’t spot any mention of an extra reward for hitting more than three bonus symbols, and it could well be that the game only allows three symbols to appear at once.
Free Spins
This feature begins with seven free spins on your remaining counter, although further sets of seven free spins can be won by hitting three more bonus scatter symbols whilst the feature is in play. The shooting star and mystery bomb features are enabled in this mode and appear more frequently than during the base game.
All free spins start with up to five bompers already present on the playfield. If you can score several consecutive wins including a bomper, a meter on the inside of its circumference will fill up, eventually making the symbol become a sticky wild for the duration of the bonus round.
X-iter Bonus Buy
ELK Studios are well-known for their X-iter bonus buy features which provide several options intended to make their slots a little more exciting… hence the name, I guess! The options available in Bompers are as follows:
- 25x Stake: Guarantees three symbol drops with increasing numbers of bompers. Your first drop will have one bomper, with one additional bomper added on each subsequent drop.
- 50x Stake: As above, except this time, you are guaranteed five symbol drops.
- 100x Stake: This is the regular bonus buy option, awarding seven free drops.
- 300x Stake: The most expensive option guarantees ten symbol drops with increasing numbers of bompers. The last five spins are guaranteed to be exciting, but I would always advise caution with these incredibly expensive feature buys.
