Boo (Big Time Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

Kicking off with what I imagine will be the first of dozens of spooky-themed slot reviews I’ll be undergoing in the months up to Halloween is one from Big Time Gaming that I think (I’m probably wrong) has the simplest and possibly shortest title in slot machine history.  It’s a word that, despite only having three letters, is perhaps responsible for causing more heart attacks than any other. Of course, I’m talking about ‘Boo’ and in the context of scaring people and not showing your displeasure at a sporting event or, heavens forbid, to a politician. It’s a simple word, a simple slot title, and to be honest, Boo is also a relatively simple slot by Big Time Gaming’s standards. It has four reels, four rows, 256 ways to win, a 96.54% RTP, and a 47,050x maximum win.

BTG has gone with a ghostly Halloween theme for this release, which is evident as you start playing. A big chunk of the symbols on the reels are different-coloured ghosts, and of course, as they usually hang around in old houses that are spooky-looking, you wonder if they were designed purposely to attract them. As for the features, a cascading mechanic is in play and replaces winning symbols with high-paying symbols; wilds with the potential of multipliers up to 4x can also appear, and then we have a free spins bonus, too.

If you plan to enjoy Halloween-themed slots over the spookiest time of the year, this one isn’t a bad place to start. Check out the Boo slot demo below to see if it’s one worthy of a spot on your Halloween playlist.

Halloween is second only to Christmas when it comes to holiday-themed slots, so brace yourself for plenty of other reviews of slots featuring ghouls, ghosts, witches, pumpkins, and everything else to do with this time of year. The good news is that if none of this year’s batch ticks your boxes, there is a vast catalogue of slots released during this time in previous years to check out. You’ll find tons of them on our Halloween slots page, but if you want a coupe of quick recommendations, I suggest looking at AvatarUX’s Witchy Poppins and Red Tiger Gaming’s Tricks and Treats

Over to the payouts, and these certainly look small at first glance. Keep in mind this is a cascading reels slot with multipliers, which is likely the reason why. The bigger payouts will come via spins revealing chain reaction wins rather than one-off payouts. The Purple Ghost returns 2x the stake for a 4-symbol combination, the Red is worth up to 1x, and the Blue and Green reward a maximum of 0.9x and 0.8x, respectively. The Ace and King share a 0.4x top return, the Queen and Jack top out at 0.3x, and the Ten and Nine share a 0.2x max return.

Big Time Gaming tends to keep its betting ranges small compared to many other slot providers, and that’s also the case with Boo. The minimum bet supported is €0.10 per spin which is excellent news for low-rollers, and the maximum price per play is €10.00, which should scratch the itch for most of those who have the funds to high roll.

Boo slot base game

Boo Slot
Boo Slot base game

Big Time Gaming has used a 4×4 grid configuration for the Boo slot game, and across that configuration are 256 ways to win. Wins are calculated when at least three high-value Ghost paying symbols line up on adjacent reels from left to right or at least four low-value playing cards do the same.

Reactions

All symbols involved in a winning combination vanish into thin air and are replaced by Ghost symbols, wilds, or scatters. If further combinations are created, the process repeats.

Wild Symbols

Wild symbols can appear on the second, third, and fourth reels and substitute for all regular symbols. Randomly, they may hold multiplier values of 1x, 2x, 3x, or 4x, which apply to the payouts of winning combinations they help to create.

Boo slot bonus features

Boo Slot
Boo Slot free spins feature

Three Halloween Pumpkin scatter symbols landing anywhere in view whilst the base game is active will trigger the Boo slot’s bonus game, and you will be awarded 12 free spins.

Free Spins Feature

During the bonus, each position on the reels can have a multiplier value that will persist and potentially increase as the bonus round continues. On any initial spin (not cascades following it), if there is a win involving high-value Ghost symbols or Wilds, one or more of the positions involved will have their multiplier values increased by 1x, 2x, or 3x.

While most positions start the bonus game with a 1x multiplier, one or more positions with a triggering scatter symbol may begin with a multiplier of 2x, 3x, or 4x. The multiplier values on each position will apply to any future winning combinations that form across them during the bonus game and will not reset between spins. Finally, if you re-trigger the free spins bonus by landing three or more scatters on a spin as it plays out, you receive an additional 3 spins.

Bonus Buy

There are two bonus buy options to consider when playing Boo:

  • You can purchase 12 free spins at a cost of 90x your current stake.
  • You can purchase 24 free spins at a cost of 500x your current stake.

Pros

  • Gorgeously presented as ever by Big Time Gaming.
  • For a 4-reel slot, a 47,050x max win is enticing.

Cons

  • A clone of the previously released Pop.

Boo Slot Review Final Thoughts

Big Time Gaming cemented its place in online slot development many years ago with its Megaways ways mechanic, now used in countless slots by countless developers. I feel the developer has regressed since then, especially since being acquired by Evolution. BTG has never been the most prolific slot studio, but before, it was worth waiting a month or two for a new release. Today, I cannot remember the last time one felt it was worth the wait, and ultimately Boo is just a reskin of the previously released POP.
