Game Overview
Here’s a little experiment: Open your favourite online casino, hit search, and then type the phrase ‘book of’. How many results did you get? I stopped counting at the end of page three – I think 36 games are more than enough to get the point across! I’ve poked fun at this bizarre trend several times in the past, but the newest addition to the ‘book of’ category is easily the silliest yet! Could Peter & Sons simply be trolling us by naming their new game ‘Book of Books’? It would be genuinely amusing if so, although it has been said that I am easily amused… Ahem, moving along – Book of Books is a 40-payline machine with a 96.10% RTP and a top prize of 10,000x the total bet.
According to the game’s paytable, the order of the Peregrin hides under the robes of musicians and minstrels. It’s a good job that this game is set in the past – they’d be arrested in a flash nowadays! Why are they hiding? They’re guarding the biggest secret known to man – the book of books! As powerful as the book may be, it still can’t award free spins by itself – you’ll need to hit three or more scatter symbols to trigger those. You’ll want to collect as many books as possible beforehand, as this will boost the number of spins, expanding symbols, and multipliers that will apply to your free spins when the scatters finally arrive.
How do you feel about this title so far? Could it really be the ‘father’ of all books? The source of all power and wealth? If you’re understandably sceptical, why not check out the free demo slot of Book of Books? It’s available to play below.
Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
As far as I’m aware, the first ‘book of’ game was Novomatic’s title Book of Ra, which first appeared in land-based casinos over two decades ago. Book of Ra was just another slot machine for the longest time, but that all changed with the release of Play’N’Go’s Book of Dead. Book of Dead was essentially just a clone of Novomatic’s earlier release, but it became hugely popular and quickly kickstarted a trend for naming slots ‘book of…’. Fast forward a few years, and there’s now a book game for every possible theme or genre you could think of! In my mind, the fact that we’re now looking at a game named ‘Book of Books’ only serves to highlight just how crazy the situation has now become!
The highest-paying symbols available in Book of Books are the wild and the king, which share equal returns of 150x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind. The bearded wizard takes the second-place spot with a payout of 80x for all five symbols, closely followed by the soldier, who pays 50x for a complete payline. There are three medium pays – the dagger and the hammer both share equal payouts of 20x, whilst the axe is a little less valuable at 10x for all five symbols. Finally, playing card suits have been chosen for the low-paying symbols; five hearts or spades will get you 8x the current bet, ahead of the clubs and diamonds, each paying 5x for a five of a kind combination.
Clicking on your current bet in the lower-right corner of the screen will open a pop-up menu with 15 different stake settings. The minimum permitted bet is just €0.10, whilst the maximum limit has been set at €50.00 per spin. So, plenty of options to choose from, whether you’re a low-roller or a player that likes to spin the reels at a higher stake.
Base Game & Modifiers
The standard reel setup in Book of Books consists of five columns of three rows each, spanned by ten fixed paylines. Those mechanics sound very much like every other ‘book of…’ slot so far, but Peter & Sons have wisely opted to build in several unique features as well.
However, you won’t be seeing any of those just yet, as all of the interesting bits are hidden away in the main bonus round. There’s no rush to trigger the feature, though, as you’ll want to collect as many power-ups as possible during the base game first!
Power-up Symbols
When two bonus scatter symbols land during a single spin, a power-up will be added to your next free spins session. The available power-ups include one or two extra free spins, additional expanding symbols, and multipliers.
Golden Bet
If you’ve collected a sufficient number of power-ups and are losing patience trying to trigger a bonus round, you may want to consider enabling the golden bet option. This will increase the cost of each spin by 50% but significantly increases your odds of hitting the bonus scatter symbols.
How significantly? Hard to say, unfortunately – the developer hasn’t included that information in the game’s paytable. I usually recommend playing with bonus bets turned on, but it’s difficult to justify such advice when you can’t be sure how that will affect the game’s RTP.
Book Of Books Slot Bonus Features
Bonus scatter symbols are included on all five reels. Landing two of these will add an additional power-up to your next set of free spins, whilst three or more of them are needed to actually trigger those spins. Seven spins are awarded regardless of the number of triggering scatters.
Free Spins
When the free spins are triggered by three scatter symbols, the bonus round is played on the standard 5×3 playfield with ten fixed paylines. If the triggering combination includes four or five scatters, the playfield size is increased to either 5×4 or 5×5 positions, respectively. The number of paylines is doubled for every additional row, up to a maximum of 40 paylines.
The longer you spend in the base game, the more power-ups you are likely to collect, and the more profitable your bonus round will be. To put this another way, this is one game where you probably don’t want to hit the bonus round on your very first spin!
Scatter symbols are still present on the reels during the bonus round and can offer the following benefits:
- 2 Scatters: Awards one spin and one random power up
- 3 Scatters: Awards three spins and one random power up
- 4 Scatters: Awards five spins, one random power-up, and resizes the playfield to a 5×4 layout
- 5 Scatters: Awards seven spins, a power-up, and the maximum 5×5 playfield size
Bonus Buy
Playing with 40 paylines and an enlarged playfield sounds like a lot of fun, but hitting the five scatters needed to trigger that mode could take forever! Has nobody got time for that? Well, Peter & Sons have wisely included a bonus buy facility with three options:
- 3 Scatters: 120x Bet, 5×3 Playfield, 10 Paylines
- 4 Scatters: 250x Bet, 5×4 Playfield, 20 Paylines
- 5 Scatters: 500x Bet, 5×5 Playfield, 40 Paylines
Pros
- Peter & Sons unique graphics help Book of Books stand out in a very overcrowded market.
- The high maximum win of 10,000x.
Cons
- No matter how it's dressed up, this is still a "book of" slot.
Book of Books Slot Review Final Thoughts
Book of Dead was a good game, but I certainly didn’t think it was world-class in the same way that many other people obviously did. Book of Books adds a few interesting new elements to the established formula, but it’s still a very similar machine at the end of the day. Surely, game providers will have to call time on this obsession with book games soon, right?
