Does anybody else feel we have passed the point whereby slot developers are essentially trolling us by naming their games “Book of…x”? I was triggered enough by the missing definite article in titles such as Book of Dead, and now ELK Studios is forcing us to suffer the grammatical indignity of Book of Sam? Somebody, please, save me! Okay, now that I have pulled myself together, I’m ready to tell you more about the latest book to hit the casino slot library; Book of Sam is a ten payline machine with a 94% RTP and a maximum win of 10,000x your current stake.
The last few slots I have reviewed from ELK Studios have been packed to bursting with special features. The developer may have chilled out slightly this time around, but only slightly! Book of Sam offers several “electric treats”, which are special features linked with the three highest-paying character symbols. The main bonus round is obviously inspired by the one in Play’N’Go’s Book of Dead, but ELK Studios have upped the ante significantly by giving you up to three expanding symbols rather than just one. As always, the developer has included their trademark X-iter bonus buy facility with several options to suit bankrolls large and small.

Book Of Sam Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I’m not entirely sure about the intended theme of Book of Sam! The characters are all dressed up in what look like Egyptian party outfits, whilst the background is a cross between Ancient Egypt and Las Vegas! It’s clear that ELK Studios have taken inspiration from Book of Dead, but what exactly is the relevance of Sam? I understand Sam is one of the characters featured on the paytable but is that it? The bottom line here is that this is a light-hearted, cartoonish take on an Ancient Egypt-themed online slot, and I think trying to read anything more into it is likely doomed to fail!
Whilst there are undoubtedly similarities between this game and Book of Dead, a quick glance at the paytable reveals that the slots are far from being direct clones of one another. There are four high-paying character symbols; Sam is the most valuable of the bunch, paying 500x your stake for a full payline of five of a kind, followed by his girlfriend Sandra, who has a return of 50x for all five of her symbols. The two have a daughter named Maggie, who will pay you 25x your bet for a complete payline. The final high-paying spot on the paytable goes to the family’s cat, paying 10x your bet for all five symbols. The remainder of the paytable comprises five royal symbols that are worth between 5x and 9x your bet for five-of-a-kind.
Book of Sam offers the same betting range as many other recent ELK Studios games, with a minimum/maximum wager of €0.20 and €100.00 per spin, respectively. That’s fine, but I wish the developer would implement a few more choices between these two limits. As it stands, there are only ten intermediate bets available, so the jumps between bet amounts seem way too large for my liking.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game of Book of Sam uses a traditional 5×3 playfield, which is the perfect size for a ten-payline game such as this. The beauty of ten-line games is that the developer can offer much bigger line hits than they can in games with a lot more paylines, but there is a trade-off in that you are sure to be hitting those wins far less frequently.
Electric Treats
The three highest-paying symbols on the paytable have a special feature attached to them, nicknamed an “electric treat”. Each character has a different effect on the reel set, as follows:
- Sam: Two or more Sam symbols on a pay line will award a free re-spin with one scatter symbol guaranteed to land.
- Sandra: Two or more Sandra symbols on a pay line will award a free re-spin with a random prize multiplier.
- Maggie: Two or more Maggie symbols on a pay line will cause all low-paying and cat symbols to be removed from the current reel set. After the remaining symbols have settled at the bottom of the playfield, new high-paying symbols will drop into place to fill the resulting free space.
Book Of Sam Slot Bonus Features
The book symbol acts as the scatter in Book of Sam and doubles up as the game wild. Hitting three or more of these symbols will trigger the main bonus round and award you eight free spins.
Free Spins
Before your feature begins, the game will randomly select one or more symbols to act as the expanding symbols for the duration of the bonus round. A three-scatter trigger will award just one expanding symbol, with one more expanding symbol being granted for each additional scatter.
You receive eight free spins by default at the start of each feature and can also win additional sets of four spins by hitting three or more scatters whilst the bonus round is in play. All re-triggers will also award an additional expanding symbol up to a maximum of five.
You are probably familiar with how things play out from here on in – each time one of your expanding symbols lands on the playfield; it will expand to fill the entire reel. Expanding symbols pay as scatters in this mode, meaning that any spin featuring two or more of them will result in a payout for all ten of the game’s pay lines.
If a spin includes multiple sets of winning symbols, the game will process them one after the other, starting with the highest-paying symbol. This means that the game can potentially award up to five separate prizes for each individual free spin.
X-iter Bonus Buy
The X-iter feature included in ELK Studio’s slots is one of the craziest bonus buy facilities out there, and Book of Sam certainly does not disappoint in this regard!
- Super Free Spins Feature: For 500x the current stake, you can purchase a unique free spin round where all symbols are expanding symbols! This really can be an insane bonus round, and I had multiple wins of over 1,000x my bet just in the time I was testing the game for this review!
- Free Spins Feature: The regular bonus game can be purchased for 100x the normal price per spin. The number of triggering scatters is determined randomly after making your purchase, but it’s inevitable that you will only hit three symbols most of the time.
- Expanding Symbols: This option enables the expanding symbol feature during the base game at the cost of 50x the current bet. Every symbol on the paytable will expand for one spin only so that you could win several times – or none at all!
- Electric Treat: For 10x your currently selected stake, you can guarantee that at least one electric treat feature will activate on the next. This option should qualify as a bonus bet, meaning even those subject to UKGC regulations should be able to take advantage of it.
- Bonus Hunt: For 2x the normal price per spin, you can “more than double” the odds of triggering a free spins feature. The paytable does not specify the precise increase in your odds, making it difficult to determine whether this is a good bet or not.
Book Of Sam Slot Review Final Thoughts
We’ve seen many clones of Book of Dead released over the past few years, so I’m pleased to see that ELK Studios has made more of an effort to do something more original with Book of Sam. I love the electric treat features, and adding multiple expanding symbols in the bonus round spices things up significantly. I’d even go as far as to say that Book of Sam surpasses Play’N’Go’s classic machine!
