Game Overview
Do you have a favourite book? Perhaps it’s the Book of Dead? Or how about the Book of Adventure? Personally, I’m quite fond of Book of Insert Name Here, but II guess I’m becoming a bit of a cynical old git as I get older! In case you hadn’t already guessed, Pragmatic Play is here today to prove to us all that, despite whatever silly ideas we may hold, there’s still plenty of room in the world for more slots that follow this bizarrely common naming convention. This latest example does at least feature a slightly interesting prefix – it’s not just Book of Tut, but John Hunter and the Book of Tut Megaways slot! The basic statistics don’t throw up any huge surprises either – it’s the usual 117,649 maximum pay ways again, along with a bang-on average 96% RTP and a respectable – although not outstanding – maximum jackpot of 10,000x the total bet.
As for the feature set, the big difference between this title and other Megaways titles is its special expanding symbol feature. If that sounds a tad familiar, your suspicions are probably correct – this works in the same way as the endlessly copied bonus round from Book of Dead, except in Book of Tut Megaways, the expanding symbols can also appear during the base game. When you reach the bonus round, things work just as they do in the Play’N’Go classic. Other than that, there’s an ante bet for increased odds of hitting a bonus round, a bonus buy facility priced at 100x the current stake, and that’s about the lot.
Everybody loves a good book, don’t they? I can only assume that’s the logic developers follow when they continue pumping out these games every other week! At the end of the day though, it is just the name – you’ll have to give our free Book of Tut Megaways slot demo a few spins to find out whether this is a miss… or a must-read!
Book Of Tut Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I mentioned the fantastic slot Book of Insert Name Here in the opening paragraph, so it would be criminal not to give the machine a link here for anybody who hasn’t seen it to check out immediately! That slot poked fun at the whole “book of…” slot craze, which I think was a fantastic and poignant sentiment on the part of developers Arcadem. More importantly, it also added a couple of new aspects to the established formula – it’s one thing to copy the naming convention of a popular machine, but I don’t understand why it’s also necessary to copy the entirety of the gameplay as well! There are a couple of other “book slots” which dare to veer from the Book of Dead playbook, but those are the exception rather than the rule. In the case of the Book of Tut Megaways slot, the only real major change is the addition of Megaways – that’s great if you enjoy Megaways slots, but for anybody else, it’s a pretty pointless addition to an already over-subscribed genre.
The worst part of this situation is that this isn’t even a particularly high-paying book slot either! The top symbol – our hero character – only pays a maximum of 2x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind, whilst Tut himself is only worth a measly 1x for all six symbols! There are two medium pays – a cat and a scarab beetle – which offer returns of 0.75x and 0.6x, respectively, after which there are just five bog standard royals with payouts ranging between 0.4x and 0.5x the total bet. Clearly, you’ll need to hit plenty of pay ways simultaneously to get anywhere close to the jackpot of the Book of Tut Megaways slot!
On the bright side, you can at least always rely on Pragmatic to ensure there are no silly restrictions on how much you can bet! The minimum/maximum permitted stakes are €0.20 and €240.00 per spin, respectively, with a 25% premium on top if you opt to play with the ante bet option turned on.
Book Of Tut Megaways Slot Base Game
Pragmatic Play has not bothered with a horizontal reel for Book of Tut Megaways. Instead, all six of the main reels can divide into between two and seven sections each during every round. I did notice that this slot machine seems to return far fewer payways than many other Megaways games on average though – lots of spins featured rows of only two or three high, and this trend was consistent throughout more than an hour of constant play.
Wild Symbols
Wilds are always useful, but they only appear on reels two through five in this slot. That makes it impossible to hit a full payline of them, but when they do appear, they make it much easier to win on a large number of payways simultaneously.
Special Expanding Symbol
During the base game, the expanding symbol, usually only found in the bonus round, can occasionally activate as a random modifier. When this occurs, the expanding symbol is chosen randomly and only applies to the current round.
Ante Bet
Enabling this option will increase the number of bonus rounds you get to play and improve the overall RTP by a very small amount. Each spin does cost 25% more when you turn the ante bet option on, but that’s a price worth paying for the guarantee of seeing the most profitable part of the slot more frequently.
Book Of Tut Megaway Slot Bonus Features
Despite this being a Megaways machine with six reels, you still only need to land three book scatter symbols to trigger a set of free spins. There’s also a cash prize attached to the scatters – 3x, 15x, 100x, or 500x the total bet for three, four, five, or six symbols, respectively.
Free Spins Feature
Before the bonus game begins, a special expanding symbol will be selected from those available on the paytable. You’ll then be awarded ten free spins, during which all occurrences of this symbol will expand to cover their entire reel every time they land. Special expanding symbols also pay as scatters during the bonus round, so you only need to land three of them anywhere on the playfield to score a win,
Bonus Buy
If you wish, you can pay 100x the current stake to skip standard play and go directly to the bonus round. Taking advantage of this option results in a slight increase in the RTP.
Pros
- Sizable payout of 500x for hitting all of the scatters, which is a rare sight in modern slots!
- The expanding symbol modifier works well as an additional modifier.
- Jackpot of 10,000x the total bet.
Cons
- As fun as it is, there’s no escaping from the fact that you’ve seen it all before!
- Regular paytable prizes are tiny.
Book Of Tut Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts
This is a solid “book slot”, and I do love the fact that the expanding symbol feature is present in both the standard play and free spins bonus. Many of you will likely remember Blueprint's release Legacy of Ra Megaways, so if you enjoyed that and you're a loyal follower of the Book of Dead style slots, you’ll almost certainly get a kick out of Book of Tut Megaways.
