It’s been a while since I thoroughly looked at a new game from Playtech; there are so many new developers on the scene these days that it can be tricky to pick out which games to look at in detail and which just deserve a quick overview instead. Playtech’s Boom! Online slot is beautifully presented and instantly reminds you just how great the old guard can be when they give a new game their full attention. There are 50 pay lines, four Jackpot Boom! Prizes including a Grand Jackpot of 2,000x your bet and a theoretical RTP of 96.59%. So far, so good – what else does Boom! Have to offer?
Perhaps the most frustrating thing I noticed immediately was that Boom! has a paytable that does not update as you change your stake. Instead, Playtech simply states on the paytable that wins are divided by your line bet, which is your stake divided by 50 – it’s really surprising that one of the oldest and most prominent online slots developers can’t get this small thing right! Feature wise, however, there is both a free games feature and a hold and re-spin feature, which is a three-spin bonus round with expanding pay lines. Together, these two features nicely break up the base gameplay, and I never became bored as I played Boom! Video slot.

Boom Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The theme of Boom! Is non-descript in many ways; just like the title, the reel set doesn’t give you much indication as to what the game is all about. Once you see the scatter and bonus symbols – both represented by some type of bomb – you begin to get an idea, but the rest of the symbols are mainly random, and I think Playtech tried to give Boom! More of a “feel” than “theme” by using the familiar future-80s aesthetic of pinks and purples, with a large helping of blues for good measure. As I mentioned in the first section, the result is a very attractive game but one that doesn’t have any apparent competitors to compare it with.
The wild sits at the top of the paytable, but look a little bit closer, and you will notice that it returns the same 150 coins as the highest-paying bomb symbol pictured a little bit lower down. If you are betting €1.00 per spin, you’ll need to divide that number by 50 to get your line bet – €0.02 – and then multiply that by the prize shown of 150 coins. This gives a return of €3.00 for each full payline of five wild symbols; it doesn’t seem fantastic, for sure, but as there are 50 pay lines in total, you have to hope to win on many of those lines simultaneously. The scatter symbol pays 50x your total bet for five-of-a-kind, but that combination will show up a lot less than anything else on the paytable, so it doesn’t seem worth getting too excited about. The rest of the “high-paying” symbols are suitably nondescript: a string of coloured lines, three green figures that look a lot like the old symbol Microsoft MSN Messenger, and a set of glasses with coloured splashes. All these symbols pay 100 coins or 2x your total bet – not the most attractive number, and I did tell you they were non-descript, didn’t I?
The demo version of the Boom! Slot game allows you to place bets between €0.10 and €450.00 per spin, but I highly doubt that any real online casinos will support such a wide range of wagers. The minimum bet is most likely accurate, but I suspect the maximum will be set much lower than this by most casinos.
Base Game & Modifiers
The base game takes place on a standard 5×3 playfield with the aforementioned 50 pay lines, and all wins except for scatter wins are awarded for hitting three or more matching symbols from left to right. You also have the Boom! Prizes, but these can only be won from within the Hold & Re-spin feature, so there isn’t much to discuss regarding the base game. Let’s move straight to the bonus rounds, as there is much more to discuss.
Boom Slot Bonus Features
There are two main features in Boom! Online slot, each of which is triggered by its own set of scatter symbols. The free games feature requires three or more scattered bonus bombs, and you win a little bit more for hitting four or five scatter symbols but sadly, there isn’t any benefit within the free games feature itself. The hold & re-spin feature needs six or more bomb symbols to trigger, and these do not have any payout of their own attached but do become sticky during the bonus round. Let’s check both out in a little more detail:
Free Games Feature
Three or more bonus bomb symbols will trigger eight free games, during which a special frame will mark the third reel. The frame will only contain wilds and bomb symbols, increasing your chances of winning on many pay lines simultaneously or winning the hold & re-spin feature.
Playtech could have added a little more to this bonus round, but each time I hit it, I came out with a decent return, so I feel as if it’s quite reasonable as it is overall.
Hold & Respin Feature
This feature ends up being the more interesting of the two, as each bomb symbol that forms part of the triggering combination will be held in place for the duration of the feature. As well as new bomb symbols resetting your remaining free spin counter back to three, each two of these symbols that you hit will also unlock additional lines.
Any bomb symbols that land on the new 7th line will receive a 2x multiplier, whilst a 5x multiplier will boost those landing on the 8th line. When bomb symbols land on the 9th reel, they will transform into star symbols that will change into a Boom! Prize at the end of the bonus round.
The boom prizes include 20x your stake for the Mini, 100x your stake for the Minor, 500x your stake for the Major, and finally, 2,000x your bet if you are lucky enough to hit a Grand Jackpot. You can win each of these multiple times during a single hold and re-spin feature, but simply entering the feature does not guarantee you will win a Boom! Prize, unlike many other games that have this type of bonus round.
Predictably, I only hit Mini jackpots while testing this game, but the small sample size means that I can’t say how rare the other prizes might be with any certainty. Overall, I enjoyed this feature and feel it is much better than the free games feature.
Boom Slot Review Final Thoughts
Boom! Is a fantastic reminder of how great Playtech can be, and I’m pleased to see that the direction of the online slots I have been reviewing lately seems to be continuing in a positive direction. Hopefully, we’ll see something new and fantastic from NetEnt and Microgaming as well! Check this one out – it’s definitely recommended.
