Game Overview
The first screen of Hacksaw Gaming’s latest online slot promises us “an entirely new type of game” before pointing us towards its 3×3 reel set and low level of volatility. I feel as if I must be missing something here – three by three-reel slots are usually referred to as “classic slots” these days, a reference to their older design compared to newer five-reel machines. Anyway, the Break Bones slot includes a surprising 17 paylines, which is an absolute bucketload for a three-reel game, along with a 96.22% RTP and a 3,333x maximum win.
The title screen also provides us with the first reveal of a couple of the included features. The game includes two types of multipliers: global and wild, the former of which is a result of the latter; wild multipliers can be anything from 2x to 100x, so I would guess that the global multiplier can reach even higher. An “EchoSpins” feature can repeat the results of a spin up to five times, effectively just another multiplier layer on top of the two already mentioned. The main bonus round is labelled the “bones game” and awards ten free spins with better odds of hitting the most valuable EchoSpins. A bonus buy facility is included for those lucky enough to be permitted to use it!
We’re big fans of Hacksaw’s output here at Demoslot, and we always recommend you give their latest creations a few spins for yourself – our free demo slot of Break Bones is included below.
Break Bones Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Spooky games come in various shapes and sizes, and there is always an increase in these types of slot releases at this time of the year due to the Halloween (and, for UK readers, Guy Fawkes Night, too) festivities that occur in late October. We’ve already looked at many such games this year, including Tricks & Treats, Book of Halloween, Spooky Vibes Accumul8, and many more are on the way throughout October. Developers have been creating new Halloween-themed online slots every year for more than two decades now, meaning that you are spoilt for choice today if you are looking for a game that features witches, pumpkins, ghosts, and other such related imagery. The beauty of Hacksaw’s game here is that it should cater to those who enjoy the Halloween season and those who don’t care for it. Slots that include the word “Halloween” in the title are likely to significantly drop player numbers by Christmas, whereas Hacksaw is unlikely to suffer any such loss with Break Bones.
Three-reel slots don’t give much scope for developers to include large hits on their paytables, a problem which surely must be exacerbated by including 17 paylines on such a tiny grid size. Despite these limitations, Hacksaw has still managed to include a 4x bet return for a full payline of three-of-a-kind wild symbols, matching the payout for the highest-paying regular symbol. The yellow skull drops to just 2x, but the regular skull will only pay 1x your bet for all three. The last of the high-paying symbols is yet another skull, with a triangle motif painted over the top and paying 0.5x the bet. These seem like good returns for a three-reel game, although I haven’t quite worked out how Hacksaw has concluded a 3,333x maximum win!
I wasn’t sure what to think about the betting range, but it turns out that this is one of the least surprising parts of the game. The minimum wager is set at €0.10 per spin, whilst the maximum bet of €100.00 per round seems like it will be way more than any sane person will likely want to bet on this game.
Base Game & Modifiers
Despite Hacksaw’s claims of this being an entirely new type of game, I struggled to find anything truly unique or innovative about Break Bones. I guess the features offered here are relatively novel when shoehorned into a 3×3 reel design, but I certainly would not call this an entirely new type of game. That doesn’t mean it is a bad game. However – it would be a shock if Hacksaw did deliver a complete duffer on us!
Multipliers
Break Bones includes wild multiplier symbols, represented by a wild symbol with an overlay denoting its value. Wild multipliers can be worth 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x, or 100x, although I never saw anything larger than 10x while testing the game.
If one or more wild multiplier symbols land on the reels, the values shown on them will be added to the global multiplier displayed at the top of the reel set. This global multiplier will be applied to all wins currently shown on the reels, making these symbols much more valuable than a regular multiplier wild.
Echospins
This feature is effectively just a third multiplier that can occasionally compound the effects of the two discussed in the previous section by repeating the current spin and paying you out for a second time.
During the bonus round, the EchoSpins feature can trigger up to five repeated spins rather than the usual one. Any multiplier wilds shown on the reels will be added to the global multiplier each time these repeated spins occur. This means that a 5x multiplier wild can end up being worth 30x by the time you get to the final EchoSpin and all the stops in between – a total of 105x the regular paytable value of the symbols on the reels.
Break Bones Slot Bonus Features
Break Bones includes a single main bonus round triggered whenever three “Bones Game” scatter symbols appear on all three reels simultaneously. Let’s take a look at what you can expect to see when this bonus round becomes active.
Free Spins
The “Bones Game” is a ten free spin feature with increased odds of hitting the skeleton hand symbol, which triggers the EchoSpins feature. As mentioned above, the EchoSpins feature can cause up to five repeat spins during this mode, rather than just one in the base game.
Bonus Buy
The “Bones Game” should be much more profitable than the base game because of the enhancements applied to the EchoSpins feature. It costs 80x the regular spin price to purchase a bonus round, allowing you to skip the slot’s less profitable base game stage.
My own results using this feature were mixed; I definitely lost money on the majority of bonus purchases, but when I did make a profit, it was usually a hefty premium on top of the 80x cost of the feature. These results bring Hacksaw’s claims of low volatility into question, although my sample size was far too small to make a definitive statement regarding this.
Break Bones Slot Review Final Thoughts
If you enjoy the classic three-reel slot machine style, then you are likely to love Break Bones; this is a much more interesting slot than a typical three-reel game, and it even has a feature set that wouldn’t feel out of place in a five-reel slot. Overall, Break Bones is worth a look for the novelty value alone!
