Game Overview
It could be considered quite a disaster if the Mrs puts the mockers on you having a night out on the beer with the lads, but to have a thirteen-year hiatus in being able to buy alcohol legally, phwoar, it doesn’t even bear thinking about, does it? Of course, this was prohibition in the USA, which makes for an awesome theme of an online slot. Game provider Quickspin agrees too, and their 5 reel video slot Brooklyn Bootleggers comes with statistics of 10 fixed paylines, an RTP of 96.25%, and a maximum win of 10,000x bet.
It’s not a particularly heavy feature set on offer in this game, with just one base game feature to talk of called the ‘The Lock Up’. This can activate on any spin, and any of the games criminals caught within the Lock Up Frame will be banged up, where arresting a minimum of four villains will award a prize. The main free spins bonus is just an enhanced version of the base game mod, with the highlighted frame active on every spin and an additional chance of hitting some re-triggers also up for grabs. Those players feeling impatient who can access the bonus buy feature can trigger the free spins instantly at the cost of 60x the bet.
It seems you’re set to take the role of Elliot Ness and bring down the most notorious mafia members the USA has ever seen. However, I’d suggest you get some practice first, so why not try out our free demo slot of Brooklyn Bootleggers? It’s available for you to play below.
Brooklyn Bootleggers Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Of all the most infamous gangsters of the prohibition era, Al Capone was the most well-known, and although he had hundreds of dirty cops on his payroll, Elliot Ness and his team of untouchables would inevitably jail Capone in the end, but not for his bootlegging antics, instead he was convicted in 1931 and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for tax evasion. During his incarceration, he served 4.5 years at the legendary Alcatraz Prison, which, funnily enough, provider Relax Gaming made a couple of slots about titled Hellcatraz and Hellcatraz 2 Dream Dream Drop. Another decent game worth checking out themed around Prohibition is Red Tiger’s Cotton Gang Affair, which focuses on another gangster from that period named Owney Madden. Anyway, back to Brooklyn Bootleggers, and let’s see how it shapes up in the pays section.
Taking pride of place at the top of the paytable is the Wild symbol and the scar-faced gangster, both worth 200x bet for a five of a kind win. Next, we have the Moll, valued at 100x for a complete line of five, followed by the chubby-looking gangster who pays 30x if five connect on a payline, and finally, the last of the premium paying symbols, the younger-looking mafia member who pays 20x the bet for a completed payline. As for the low pays, they come in the form of card suits, hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades, and there’s an additional star symbol too. All of these have the same value and will pay 10x bet for five of a kind hit.
There are several stake sizes that Brooklyn Bootleggers can be played at, with the minimum bet starting at just €0.20 and the maximum price of play on the game reaching €100. There are enough options, in my opinion, between the smallest stake and €2 to cover the majority of punters who will choose to play this game, so it shouldn’t matter what the size of your bankroll is when you enter the action.
Base Game & Modifiers
Played across a standard video slot format of 5×3, Brooklyn Bootleggers has 10 fixed paylines active throughout the base game and the free spins feature. Wins are credited to the balance when a minimum of three matching symbols connect, starting from the leftmost reel first, and of course, these need to be on one of the 10 winlines.
The Lock Up
On any spin in the base game, it is possible that The Lock Up feature may randomly trigger. When this occurs, an area of 3×3, 4×3, or 5×3 will be highlighted as a prison area. If any characters or wilds land in these positions, they will be locked up, and each one will add a position to the win meter to the left of the reels. You’ll require at least four mob members or wilds to be banged up for a prize to be awarded.
Brooklyn Bootleggers Slot Bonus Features
The bonus scatter symbols appear on all five reels, and you’ll need just three of these to land to trigger the game’s free spins feature. Landing three scatters will award 10 spins, whilst four and five will reward you with 15 and 20 spins, respectively.
Tip Off Free Spins
During the free spins bonus, The Lock Up feature is active on every spin, with the size of the prison area being determined at the beginning of the bonus. Additional free spins may also be won with 3, 4, or 5 scatters landing in view awarding an extra 3, 5, and 7 spins, respectively.
Bonus Buy
Those fortunate enough to be playing from a jurisdiction where the bonus buy button is lit can access the free spins feature for 60x the current bet. This will also increase the RTP of the game to 96.65%.
Pros
- Great theme for an online slot.
- Fair RTP and a decent max win of 10,000x bet.
Cons
- The bonus round can be frustrating if the lock-up area is small, as it drastically limits the amount you can win.
- The base game modifier and free spins feature are both the same.
Final Thoughts
I was really excited to see a prohibition-themed slot and had high hopes for Brooklyn Bootleggers. Sadly, although the game is very well made, and I loved the music attached to it, the slot just failed to entertain me for any longer than a few minutes. The most frustrating part for me was to trigger the free spins and only get the smallest area several times in a row. Perhaps they would have been better off making it appear as a random size on each spin. I can imagine it would be annoying to buy the bonus on a high stake and continually be awarded the 3x3 lock-up section.Give the game a blast for yourself, and see what you think of it. For the time being, though, I'll leave it down to Elliot Ness to sort this mafia lot out; I'm off for a pint!
