Large African animals seem to be popular with slot developers, and the Buffalo is particularly well catered for as far as slots go. It’s a real shame the best versions of Buffalo Gold are not available for online play – many players have taken secret videos inside Las Vegas casinos showing these games, and they look truly amazing. It’s a shame Playtech chose to copy Raging Rhino here rather than Buffalo Gold, but Aristocrat will surely port their land-based Buffalo games to online casinos eventually. Taking a look at the paytable, it is presented in a very different way to that of Raging Rhino, but almost every payout is exactly the same. There are a few differences though, such as the fact that the scatter symbol has no payout of its own in Buffalo Blitz – in Raging Rhino, you could win up to 1,000x your stake just from hitting six scatter symbols. Buffalo Blitz compensates for this by doubling the number of free spins you receive from 50 to 100 as well as adding the random multiplier feature to the bonus round. The effect of this is that it is definitely possible to win more from Buffalo Blitz, but Raging Rhino players will undoubtedly miss the 1,000x payout for six scatters if they try this game. Of course, that is assuming they have ever seen six scatters – the combination is extremely rare in both games. The top symbols in Buffalo Blitz pay 7.5x, 6.25x, and 5x your stake for a full line of six. This sounds extremely disappointing until you remember that the top symbols are stacked and that this is a 4,096 ways game – there is plenty of potential for big hits both in regular play and the bonus round.

The Buffalo Blitz video slot is played on a 6×4 grid. Any combination of matching symbols from left to right will result in a win, as the game uses 4,096 pay ways instead of traditional pay lines. It is quite frustrating that the quick spin and autoplay options have been removed to satisfy the UK Gambling Commission, even if you are playing from a country such as Sweden where gambling regulation is handled in a much more sensible manner. Removing the quick spin and autoplay features entirely may be the easiest option for Playtech’s developers, but it also penalises players who are outside the jurisdiction of the UKGC. It’s quite depressing looking at older screenshots of the Buffalo Blitz slot game where the Turbo Mode and Autoplay options are still visible on the status bar.

Once you hit your three or more scatters, the bonus round will begin. New reel strips are used during the bonus round which includes far more stacked gold buffalo symbols, and the random multiplier of 2x, 3x, or 5x that is applied to every win can seriously boost your bonus rounds potential, should you manage to hit a 5x multiplier after a spin featuring lots of 6-of-a-kind combinations.
Re-trigger Feature
As we mentioned earlier, hitting two or more scatters during the bonus round adds additional free spins to your total. Two scatters are reasonably common, and if you are lucky enough to score a 100 free spin bonus, you will probably find you end up playing closer to 200 spins thanks to the large number of retriggers.
If you hit six scatters again during the bonus round, a full additional 100 spins will e added to your remaining total. I don’t know how often this happens, but there is one great video on YouTube where a player hits six scatters three times in a row – completely unbelievable! So, to summarise, this is a clone of Raging Rhino which adds several extra features to the bonus round. Those extra features have to be paid for somehow to keep the game’s RTP in check, and Playtech has chosen to do this by not offering a payout for hitting the scatter symbols as Williams did in the original Raging Rhino.
Which is the better game? It’s a tough call, but we have to go with Buffalo Blitz. The six scatter combination that pays 1,000x your stake in Raging Rhino is a rare event, whereas the random multiplier feature in Buffalo Blitz boosts your winnings every time you enter the bonus round. Raging Rhino was a great slot, so for Playtech to copy it and somehow create a better game is quite remarkable. Positively recommended!
