Buffalo Mania Megaways Slot (Red Tiger Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

The original Buffalo Gold slot machine by Aristocrat is still a Las Vegas exclusive, a decision that was taken in order to protect the profits of the strip’s world-famous casinos. I’m sure it seemed like a good idea at the time! Fast forward to 2023, and it’s hard to believe that there hasn’t been a rethink by now – online casinos are now packed with more than a dozen Buffalo Gold clones, with every developer and their dog seemingly getting in on the act! Today is Red Tiger’s turn, and their new Buffalo Mania Megaways machine boasts up to 117,649 payways, a 96.69% RTP, and a top win of 19995.4x the player’s stake.

Many of the recent Buffalo-themed games are nothing more than blatant clones of the source material, but I’m pleased to report that this is not the case with Buffalo Mania Megaways. The first feature of note is dubbed ‘Buffalo Stampede’ and can add as many as ten high-paying Buffalo symbols to the reels before your next round even begins! A ‘Super Wild’ modifier can also activate before any base game spin, covering one or more of the middle four reels with stacked wild multipliers. The main free spin bonus round has an ascending multiplier feature which can reach a maximum of 15x.

I remember being frustrated that I couldn’t play Buffalo Gold at home a few years ago, so it’s unbelievably typical that there are now way too many Buffalo Gold clones cluttering up the pages of my favourite online casinos! What’s that saying again, be careful what you wish for? Some of these games are direct clones of the source material – take Almighty Buffalo Megaways and Buffalo Blitz, for example; others, such as Buffalo Hunter, use similar symbols but have radically different feature sets. Buffalo Mania Megaways sits somewhere in between these camps – visually, you could easily mistake this game for Buffalo Gold, but the feature set is different enough to make this machine worth exploring in its own right.

The Buffalo is, of course, the highest-paying symbol on the paytable and has a return of 7.5x the total bet for a complete payway of six of a kind. There’s a bit of a drop before we reach the next symbol – the bear – which has a return of 2.5x for all six symbols, followed by the wolf, which pays 1.8x for a complete payway. Next, the bald eagle is worth 1.5x for a six of a kind combination, whilst a rather vulnerable-looking owl takes the final high-paying spot with its return of 1.2x for all six symbols. The low pays are all represented by standard royals, with returns ranging between 0.5x and 1x the total bet for a complete pay way.

You never know what you are going to get in terms of the betting range with Red Tiger’s slots, and the demo version of Buffalo Mania has minimum/maximum wagers of €0.10 and €4.00, respectively. Of course, there could be a few high rollers who will be unhappy at being limited to such a small maximum wager, but I don’t see these limits causing any concern for most regular players.

Base Game & Modifiers

Buffalo Mania Megaways Slot Base Game
Buffalo Mania Megaways slot base game

The base game of Buffalo Mania Megaways utilises a familiar six-reel layout, but Red Tiger has chosen not to implement an additional horizontal reel on this occasion. Instead, all six reels can divide into between two and seven rows on each spin, and therefore the maximum number of payways still ends up as 117,649. The buffalo symbol will award a payout for just two matching symbols on adjacent reels, whilst all other symbols require at least three matches starting from the leftmost reel.

Buffalo Stampede

Before any spin, a Lion King style stampede may occur, resulting in between three and ten buffalo symbols being pre-added to the reels. These buffalo symbols act as overlays, taking precedence over the regular symbols that appear in their chosen positions. More buffalo symbols can still land during the current game round.

Super Wild

During any spin, between one and four super wilds can be added to the middle four reels. Each super wild stack has a multiplier attached to it of between 2x and 7x. A 3x super wild stack behaves as three unique symbols for calculating winnings, while a 7x stack is counted as seven unique symbols, and so forth.

Buffalo Mania Megaways Slot Bonus Features

Despite this game featuring six reels, the paytable mentions that only five scatter symbols can land during a single spin. I’m not entirely sure how this works, as all six reels definitely seem to contain scatters. Hitting three scatter symbols will award 10 free spins, whilst four or five will award 15 or 20 free spins, respectively.

Free Spins

The free spins bonus round begins with a 1x win multiplier, which will increase by 1x after every winning combination that is removed from the reels. The maximum multiplier achievable is just 15x. This is not an unlimited multiplier feature, as you may have seen in many other Megaways games. Hitting two or more free spin scatters whilst the feature is active will add five more free spins to your remaining total.

Buffalo Mania Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts

I really like the new features that Red Tiger has added to the Buffalo formula here, but I can’t help but wonder why the maximum multiplier available in the bonus round is so low! Then again, I guess it doesn’t really matter when the game’s configuration can already result in a top win of nearly 20,000x your bet, does it?!

Is this the best Buffalo clone out there? Honestly, I couldn’t say – there are far too many of them to make such a determination without a comprehensive study at this point!
