Bushido Princess Megaways Slot (Kalamba Games) Slot Demo & Review

Can anybody tell me what time it is? It’s time for some badass ninja princess Megaways online slot action, obviously! Yes, that is the premise of Kalamba’s new release – in full – Megaways Bushido Princess. There seems to be a bit of a trend for putting the Megaways bit before the name of the game in some instances, but I’m clueless as to why that is. Answers on a postcard as usual – the first person with an entirely ridiculous answer wins an “I have issues” T-Shirt. Get those entries rolling in! But first, I have to tell you about that 30,000x jackpot – the biggest I can ever recall seeing from a Kalamba slot. Oh, and the 16,000 maximum pay ways – an odd number for a Megaways game that we will explain in just a moment. Ah, yes, and the RTP can be anywhere from 96.26% to 96.77%, depending on the game mode used. Enough numbers; let’s talk gameplay!

Okay, it’s showtime, so let’s get down to business; we don’t have time to play around; what is this? Errrr, it’s Kalamba’s new online slot. Can I get a witness? Oh yeah! And let me tell you, this is a heavy hitter of an online slot, hence the musical lyrics to hopefully set the mood! The game features expanding wild columns, a ‘K-Cash’ feature, pays left-to-right and right-to-left, and has both Hyperbet and free spins bonuses.

Who amongst you likes the sound of this generous and all-knowing princess? You’re mad if you don’t – just try our free demo slot of Bushido Princess Megaways and prepare to be converted! It’s available to play below:

Bushido – literally translated as “The way of the warrior” is a moral code concerning samurai attitudes, behaviour, and lifestyle. The art was formalised during the Edo (1603-1868) period in Japan, and there are multiple types of bushido which have evolved significantly throughout history. It’s interesting to see a developer concentrating on this aspect of the ‘ninja’ culture – previous efforts such as Ronin’s Honour and, ummm, Guardians of Inari, apparently, if our review archive is to be believed. I’d skip the latter and head straight for the same developer’s (Arcadem) Book of Insert Name Here if I were you. Those guys know how to make me chuckle, and that makes any half-assed ninja game forgettable, as far as I am concerned!

So, we know she believes in the way of the warrior – but does she also believe in the way of the dollar? Okay, it’s maybe not got quite the same ring of ‘honour’ to it, but hey – we’re slot players here, not samurai! The Princesses trusty set of Katana blades will get you your biggest score at 6x the total bet for a full payway of five of a kind, followed by her favourite throwing stars (that’s shuriken if you want to be all posh about it), which are worth 4x for all five symbols. A pair of daggers that no surgeon on earth could ever sew you back up should you be stabbed with one of them? That’ll be 2.5x your bet, sir, as will the lute – obviously the favourite musical instrument of Japanese royalty, I guess – and what Bushido Princess would be complete without her folding fan? Just ask Mileena of Mortal Kombat fame! Like the previous two symbols, five of these will top up your balance with 2.5x your total bet.

That was a long paragraph – but we’re not done! Six royals round out a rather lengthy paytable, with the Aces & Kings paying 2x each for five symbols, followed by 1x for the Queens & Jacks and 0.5x for the Tens & Nines. No cash premium for the scatters or wild symbols, I’m afraid, but hey – you can’t have everything, can you?

This finally brings us to the wager selection setup – there are two modes of play, standard and Hyperbet. In standard mode, the minimum/maximum permitted wagers are €0.10 and €25.00, respectively, but there’s a little more to say here too – standard mode gives 6 initial free spins when you hit a bonus round, along with an 8x maximum multiplier. The ‘Hyperbet’ alternative provides minimum/maximum bet limits of €0.20 and €20.00 per spin but also increases the initial free spin count to 8 whilst simultaneously boosting the maximum multiplier to a tasty 10x. The former option results in an RTP of 96.26%, whilst the latter is slightly better at 96.33% – not significant enough to sway my own decision towards paying more per spin, but perhaps you will feel differently.

Base Game & Modifiers

Bushido Princess Megaways Slot Base Game
Bushido Princess Megaways slot base game

Time to talk about the base game itself – this is a five-reel video slot with up to 16,000 ways, achieved via a variable number of columns on each spin. That sounds like any other Megaways slot when you hear it described in that way, but the truth is that it is anything but – take a look at page six of the paytable, and you’ll see a selection of diagrams that highlight the potential reel configurations, and they don’t look like anything that we have seen before!

The game essentially uses a 4/10/10/10/4 maximum reel configuration to create its 16,000 maximum payways, but it also pays in both directions – effectively resulting in 32,000 theoretical payways, if my math is on point today. You can hit three matching symbols on the third, fourth, and fifth reels, for example, or one matching symbol on reels three and five, along with five of the same on reel four to equal a total of three of a kind times five ways. Nice.

Note that on every spin, all columns have a minimum of two symbols and – confusingly – a maximum of four symbols, according to the paytable. So I had to spin several times to try and work out what was going on, and it soon became apparent – the 16,000 maximum pay ways are not available in the base game. Sigh, and it was all looking so promising for a while there.

Expanded Wild Columns

For each wild symbol that lands in view, it may expand and cover its entire reel before any payouts are evaluated. The expanded wild columns will have an initial multiplier attached to them, matching the number of rows in the triggering column. This multiplier indicates the number of instances of wild symbols in that column. Have you got that? It took me a few reads to wrap my head around it, and try as I might; I couldn’t make it much simpler for you. Sorry!

Respin

During the base game, when a wild symbol expands (and after payouts have been made), the expanded wild columns lock in place, and the remaining reels spin again, awarding a new grid, and new payouts are made based on it. The number of re-spins awarded is determined by the number of expanded wild columns, and new expanded wild columns can be triggered during those re-spins.

After a re-spin, the multiplier attached to each expanded wild column will increase its value if it hasn’t already reached the maximum permitted value for the current or hyperbet level.

K-cash

K-Cash symbols have a random value attached to them. If one or more of these special symbols appear, along with at least one expanded wild column, then the player will be paid the sum of all K-CASH symbols that are currently in view. This payout is repeated for every expanded wild column currently visible on screen!

Right To Left

When columns two, three, and four are all filled with expanded wild columns, after the initial evaluation of ways pays, the game may randomly award pays based on the evaluation of any wins formed from right to left on the reels.

Bushido Princess Megaways Slot Bonus Features

Bushido Princess Megaways Slot Free Spins Feature
Bushido Princess Megaways slot free spins feature

Wow, that was quite some list of base game features wasn’t it? So how much more can the bonus round bring to the table? Not too much in the way of new things, as it turns out, but we do get some enhanced variants of the standard base game features. Of course, you’ll need to trigger the feature first, though!

How is this done? You’ll need to hit two bonus scatter symbols on reels one and five simultaneously, with the number of free spins awarded determined by your current bet level – standard (Hyperbet 1) grants six initial spins, whilst Hyperbet 2 ups this to eight starting spins.

Free Spins

During the free spins mode, the stacked wild symbols do not trigger a re-spin as they do in the base game but will add three free spins to your remaining counter. Additionally, a meter appears on top of the expanded wild symbol with three marks – the stacked wild will remain in place until this meter empties out of all three of its marks.

Bonus Buy

The bonus buy menu has three choices in Bushido Princess:

  • 6 Free Spins (Max Multiplier 8x) = 18.6x Bet
  • 8 Free Spins (Max Multiplier 10x) = 53.8x Bet
  • 10 Free Spins (Max Multiplier 10x) = 67.1x Bet

These all seem like very reasonable prices to me, considering the value on offer – I guess that this princess is benevolent, too!

Pros

  • Gorgeous-looking graphics and presentation – fit for a princess!
  • Cheap bonus buy options will please anybody outside of the UK!
  • The huge maximum jackpot of 30,000x the total bet

Cons

  • The 16,000 max ways are a bit misleading – you can’t hit them except in very specific circumstances.
  • The bonus round feels quite tricky to trigger, in my experience.

Final Thoughts

This a solid entry in Kalamba’s ever-expanding portfolio of high-quality online slots – don’t miss this one; it’s a cracker.
