Candy Fall (Blueprint) Slot Demo & Review

I had high hopes for Blueprint Gaming’s Candy Fall online slot after I first fired up the game and saw the Tetris-like symbols shown in the ‘incoming candy’ box and the main “reel set” comprised of numerous other interlocking shapes. I’ve seen a couple of other games over the years which tried to incorporate elements of Tetris into their gameplay, but I can’t imagine they were very successful as I can’t think of the name of a single one of them anymore. Unfortunately, alarm bells started to ring when I saw the game’s maximum win, which is listed as being either €250,000 or 251x the total bet… whichever is reached first. That feels a little off-key to me, and the lower-than-average RTP of 95% does not provide a great first impression either.

So what’s the problem? Opening the paytable reveals that there’s no paytable for Candy Fall whatsoever! Instead, this page tells you about the 48 different shapes that can appear on the grid, including eight different configurations of blocks and six different colours. Clearing the shapes in any column will award you the amount shown in the yellow title block that sits on top of each column’s symbol stack. Clearing a stack with a ‘bonus’ title block will trigger the candy bonus, the game’s solitary special feature. It’s got some making up to do to cover the slack uncovered in this machine so far.

Fancy a little wager on whether that bonus round is going to turn out to be good enough? I’ve got ten grand on ‘sadly not’; who’s going to match it? No cheating by playing our free demo slot of Candy Fall first though, even if it is available to play below!

Slot developers have made endless successful games based on Candy Crush and its many copycat puzzlers, so it’s interesting to point out just how unsuccessful they have been at replicating that success with older titles such as Tetris. I’m sure that it can be done with a little effort, but for the time being, the closest that we have got is probably Hacksaw’s Cubes and Cubes 2 machines. Both games are probably more similar to Klax or Columns than actual Tetris, but considering that both of the former games were always labelled as being Tetris clones back in the day, I’d say it’s fair to include them here.

Unfortunately, folks, our woes are only going to continue now that it’s time to talk about the game’s paytable. In short, it doesn’t have one – instead, matching shapes from the box on the left with those shown in the main playfield on the right causes shapes to drop lower on the screen. That’s not enough to score a win, though… don’t be silly! Instead, you’ll need to clear at least one column to achieve a win, and in my experience, that tends to be little more than 1x or 2x the total bet if you are lucky. Obviously, bigger hits are possible – I saw heading blocks with 20x and 25x appear on them frequently, but never once did I have one reach the bottom of the playfield. After a little persistence, my best base game out of two sets of a hundred spins was just 12x my total bet – I’m sorry, but that really does feel appalling to me, Blueprint!

Just to add to the complete bizarreness of the entire package presented here, this game offers minimum/maximum bets of €0.10 and €10.00 per spin, respectively – identical to the last two Blueprint releases I have reviewed. The thing is, this time around, we have 23 different bets to choose from inside of that range. This is just preposterous to me – why does every good Blueprint release limit your ability to decide how much you want to bet so strictly, yet this one is as flexible as they come? The mind boggles.

Base Game & Modifiers

Candy Fall Base Game

On to the base game now, and I really don’t even want to write this because I have very little to add to what has already been said. On that note, I’ll do my best to keep repetition to a minimum as there’s only going to be the masochists in the crowd hanging around after everything I’ve already told you!

Technically, Candy Fall utilises a 6×6 reel set, although the size of the grid is pretty much irrelevant. After hitting spin, you’ll see three Tetris pieces drop into the incoming candy box displayed on the left. You’ll also be given nine additional shapes to help you clear as much of the grid on the right as possible.

I spent my first session testing this game, clicking on the pieces as suggested in the information pages, but eventually realised that all you needed to do was keep pressing spin. Better yet, just hit ‘reveal all’ on the far left to skip all of this fluff entirely… you’re genuinely not missing anything!

Winning Results

To win anything whilst playing Candy Fall, you’ll need to get lucky with your twelve shapes and clear at least one of the six columns on the playfield. You effectively get four ‘spins’ to do this, but I would recommend skipping those entirely unless you can play this machine with autoplay enabled.

Candy Fall Bonus Features

It’s time for the big moment folks, the all-important bonus round which is going to turn everything around! Hmmm, or maybe not.

Pick Me Bonus

Seriously folks, I’m afraid this is your lot – get the word ‘BONUS’ to drop to the bottom of the column, and you’ll be given a single click with which to pick a shape to determine how you have won. It took me forever to see this part of the game, and when I eventually did, I only won 30x my total bet.

Pros

  • I like Tetris shapes.

Cons

  • No slot gameplay at all and no Tetris-like gameplay either. It’s not even a game!
  • Maximum jackpot of €250,000 or 251x, whichever comes first… and the max bet is €10.00 per spin? Give me a break.

Final Thoughts

Has anyone got a time machine so I can go back and reclaim the two hours of my life I just lost reviewing this game? By all means folks give this one a try if you're curious, but prepare yourself for lots of head-scratching and eyebrow-raising.
