Captain Glum Pirate Hunter Slot (Play'n Go) Slot Demo & Review

So, pirates are not interesting or tough enough for you, huh? Then why not take on a pirate hunter? I can’t say I’d ever heard of a pirate hunter before now… I assume that they hunt pirates, but what can that really mean? Stealing back treasure? Recovering hostages without paying the ransom? I guess there’s only one way to find out… let’s dig into Play’N’Go’s latest online slot – Captain Glum, Pirate Hunter! As always, let’s begin with the all-important vital statistics – the game uses connecting payways for its payout mechanism, an interesting mechanic that seems to be growing in popularity right now. The top jackpot has been set at 9,000x the player’s stake, whilst the RTP is casino-selectable with a default setting a little above 96%.

How about the features, then – do they give us any clues as to what the Captain gets up to? Well, the first information page tells us there are three game modes – regular spins, including permanent wilds and Captain’s Due modifier, free spins with reel expansion feature and Barrage modifier, and a treasure hunt. Those permanent wilds sound interesting, but how do they work? It’s soon apparent – a single wild is always present on the reels but moves to a new position at the start of each spin. The captain’s due is a consolation feature that activates when one or two scatters land on the reels, but as ever, it’s the free spins where things begin to heat up! In this mode, the captain will take on another ship for the chance to enlarge the reel set, creating additional pay ways. Win the battle for an opportunity to multiply your winnings up to tenfold!

Captain Glum Pirate Hunter Slot Paytable

Pirates seem to be returning as a fashionable theme amongst online slot developers in recent months… you wait months for a new pirate-themed online, and then half a dozen spring up at once! A few recent additions to our review library include Pirates Quest, Boom Pirates, and Pirate Golden Age, although this game has a distinctly different look and feel to all of them. As with most Play’N’Go slots, Captain Glum is undeniably a great-looking and well-presented game – it’s targeted mainly at the UK market, so there is no bonus buy feature included. That may be slightly disappointing if you are one of the lucky players who aren’t prohibited from using such features, but it’s really the only negative worthy of a mention here.

The paytable might be a bigger disappointment to some – the highest-paying symbols are the wild and captain, but both are only worth 5x the total bet for a full payway of five of a kind. The captain’s female mate will pay you 2.4x for all five of her symbols, whilst two ships offer returns of either 1.2x or 1x for a complete pay way. The low pays are represented by the four playing card suits, and all share equal returns of 0.6x for all five symbols, and that’s everything – it doesn’t seem like very much, does it?

As for the betting range, Play’N’Go has included a minimum wager of just €0.05 per spin, which might be useful if you only have a small bankroll at your disposal. At the other end of the spectrum, the minimum bet of €100.00 per round is sure to be enough to cater for the high rollers in the crowd.

Base Game & Modifiers

Captain Glum Pirate Hunter Slot Base Game
Captain Glum Pirate Hunter slot base game

During regular play, Captain Glum utilises a standard 5×3 reel set. You’ll notice some clouds positioned at the top and bottom of the playfield – these can be uncovered during the free spin mode, adding two new rows to the reels. The game doesn’t state how many payways are available in each mode, but any line of matching symbols connected horizontally or at the corners will result in a win. To put it another way, all symbols need to be adjacent within one position, both horizontally and vertically.

Captains Due

On every base game spin, one wild symbol is guaranteed to be positioned somewhere on the playfield. If one or two scatters land during a spin, the wild has the chance to move to one of their positions, leaving additional wild symbols behind it as it moves.

Captain Glum Pirate Hunter Slot Bonus Features

Hitting three or more scatter symbols during the base game will trigger the free spins feature. The number of triggering scatters will determine how many spins the cannons need to reload – that will be important later!

Free Spins & Treasure Hunt Multiplier

During free spins, the captain and his team are positioned at the bottom, whilst an enemy flagship is located at the top. Destroying segments of the flagship will cause the playfield to expand, adding extra rows and payways to the feature. Shots fired by the enemy vessel can also damage your ship, so you’ll need to be careful! The team with the highest shots landed at the end of the round wins the battle.

If you are victorious, the feature will end with the treasure hunt feature – a choice of three chests to determine if your win will be multiplied by 2x, 3x, or 10x.

Pros

  • Great looking game with a unique and fun theme.
  • A decent jackpot of 9,000x the total bet
  • Exciting and generous bonus round is well worth looking forward to.

Cons

  • After half an hour of play, you’ll almost certainly have seen everything the game has to offer.
  • The regular paytable prizes aren’t particularly exciting.

Final Thoughts

Captain Glum is a decent release by Play’N’Go, although I can’t see it holding players' interest over the long term. The base game doesn’t have a huge amount of potential, and the lack of a bonus buy feature means you won’t be able to skip to the more interesting free spins mode – even if such features are allowed in your country. Still worth a look, though.
