Cash Box Slot (Pragmatic Play) Slot Demo & Review

Online slots come in all kinds of shapes and sizes nowadays – regular old line-based slots remain somewhat popular with players, but those with payways (and in particular, Megaways) seem to be the most common variety being published today. Of course, those are not the only payout mechanics in frequent use today – grid slots and scatter-pay games are also increasingly popular with slots fans. I guess that Pragmatic Play felt there was still room in the market for something new and different because their new Cash Box machine doesn’t fit into any of those categories! With an RTP of 96.02% and a top prize of 5,000x the total bet, it doesn’t SOUND like anything out of the ordinary, but there’s much more to a slot than just its vital statistics.

The first thing you will notice when looking at our screenshots of the game is the overwhelming number of cashbox symbols. In fact, the reels contain nothing but those symbols; however, they do conceal a couple of other more exciting things inside. That’s a great thing too, because the cashbox doesn’t pay anything by default – a big problem considering that’s the only symbol! Fortunately, any cash box can open to reveal a monetary value of up to 50x the total bet, although you will need to hit three of them anywhere on the screen before you can collect any visible prizes. Cash boxes can also hold three jackpot symbols worth 40x, 500x or 5,000x the total bet, as well as scatter symbols used to trigger the main free spin bonus round. A bonus buy facility allows you to purchase a set of free spins directly at the cost of 100x the current stake.

So, it’s a slot with little in the way of regular symbols and no real paytable – still want to give it a try? Our free demo slot of Cash Box is available to play below.

Cash Box Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Cash Box Slot Paytable
Cash Box slot paytable

Banks, money, and cash are all obvious themes for an online slot machine – typing the word ‘cash’ into our search engine reveals over 1,200 results, many of which include the word in their titles. With such a huge number of titles, cash-based games come in many forms – Evolution Gaming’s recent Cash or Crash Live Gameshow has proven to be a smash hit with players, whilst Play’N’Go’s Cash of Command was an interesting take on the grid slot genre. Nevertheless, I’ve still never seen anything quite like this machine from Pragmatic Play – can you really get away with making an online slot that doesn’t have any regular symbols?

I guess you might consider the opened cash boxes to be a substitute for regular symbols – they can pay 0.05x, 0.1x, 0.25x, 0.5x, 1x, 2.5x, 5x, 25x, or 50x the total bet, and requiring three to land in view before those sums are paid isn’t unreasonable given that most slots require you to line up three symbols in adjacent positions starting from the left. This setup makes the game look quite similar, though, and I can’t help but think that for many players, the symbols and the paytable are an integral part of the experience of playing online slots. You’ll need three, four, or five of the mini, major, or grand symbols, respectively, to win the corresponding jackpots of 40x, 500x, or 5,000x the total bet, whilst the scatter symbols have smaller prizes of 1x, 5x, or 10x your stake reserved for hitting three, four, or five of them at once.

There are no shock surprises hidden behind the game’s wager selection system. We have minimum/maximum stake limits of €0.20 and €100.00 respectively, and as with all games by Pragmatic Play, no arbitrary restrictions on picking an amount between the two extremes.

Base Game & Modifiers

Cash Box Slot Base Game

It’s all quite strange, isn’t it? You wouldn’t think that a game that uses a typical five-reel, three-row setup could be quite so different from every other machine out there! All of the symbols present in Cash Box utilise a scatter-pay mechanic, so it’s just a case of hitting three, four, or five of them anywhere on the screen to receive your prize.

Cash Box Symbols

The entire reel set of Cash Box comprises nothing but Cash Box symbols. At the end of every spin, one or more cash boxes may open to reveal an alternative symbol or a cash prize. The cash prizes can be worth as little as 1/20th up to 50x the current stake. If three or more cash prizes are visible anywhere on the screen, their values will be summed and paid out as a single prize.

Cash Box Slot Bonus Features

Cash Box Slot Free Spins Feature
Cash Box slot free spins feature

The free spin scatter symbol does not appear on the reels as standard – instead, up to five of them can be randomly revealed when cash boxes open at the end of a round. Hitting three, four, or five scatters in this manner will award 1x, 5x, or 10x the total bet, respectively, in addition to 10, 15, or 20 free spins.

Free Spins

There’s not a great deal going on in the base game of Cash Box, and unfortunately, things do not improve very fast if you make it to the free spins feature. In fact, I couldn’t notice any real difference between this mode and the base game – the cash boxes still contain the same values with not even a multiplier in sight. You can at least re-trigger the free spins, with three or more scatters awarding the same number of spins as they do during the base game.

Jackpots

Cash boxes will frequently open to reveal jackpot symbols, but you won’t always get the number required to receive the corresponding payout! Three MINI symbols appearing anywhere on the screen will award 40x the total bet, increasing to 500x for four MAJOR symbols and 5,000x for five GRAND symbols.

Bonus Buy

Players who can utilise the bonus buy mechanic in the game can choose to trigger the free instantly spins feature if they wish at the cost of 100x the current bet

Pros

  • Any spin can award the top prize of 5,000x – you don’t need to wait for a bonus round.
  • Unique style of scatter-pay machine.

Cons

  • It all looks the same, doesn’t it?
  • Nothing to separate the free spins mode from the base game.
  • The amounts paid for hitting the scatters are so small as to be near-irrelevant.

Final Thoughts

I’m not sure what to make of this game – it’s an interesting and unique style of slot, but just because something is unique and unusual doesn’t guarantee it will be any good. It’s worth a look out of curiosity, but I’m not sure I would ever play this for real money.
