Game Overview
Everything about Skywind’s new Celestial Beauty online slot feels a little bit… familiar, you know? I’m sure it’s just a coincidence, but the pretty anime-style female characters sure do look a lot like those from the Starlight Princess games… Hmmm. I wonder! There are other similarities between the two games – both use the scatter-pay payout mechanic, for example, meaning that wins are awarded for any set of eight or more matching symbols landing anywhere on the screen. The maximum win is stated though – 100,000x the current coin bet, which unfortunately implies a capped jackpot of just 5,000x the total bet.
The base game includes a special heart-shaped wild symbol that can be generated when winning combinations are removed from the reels. These wilds come with multipliers of up to 5x and persist whenever other winning symbols are removed, making them extremely valuable. There are two versions of the main free spins feature – the ‘Moon Beauty’ variant is the lower volatility option, whilst the ‘Sun Beauty’ mode has higher payout potential. Both modes are available to be purchased using the bonus buy facility, and you can also increase your chances of triggering the free spins via regular play by enabling the ‘Double Chance’ bonus bet for 25% more per round.
The anime-inspired art style used in Celestial Beauty will likely appeal to a wide range of players, but it’s the 100,000x jackpot that is likely to keep them coming back! So give the game a try for yourself with our free demo slot of Celestial Beauty, available to play below:
Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I already mentioned Starlight Princess in the opening paragraph, but it’s impossible to discuss the theme of Celestial Beauty without coming back to Pragmatic Play’s hugely popular game once again. Not only do both titles share a common meaning, but the gameplay of each slot is almost identical as well. Many other games use a similar art style, all of which seem to have the word ‘princess in their titles for some strange reason! Examples include NetEnt’s Koi Princess – a personal favourite – and Moon Princess Trinity, which is itself a clone Rise of Olympus online slot. I think Pragmatic Play’s game just about has the edge visually, but there really isn’t much in it, if I’m honest!
It took a little effort to decipher the paytable of Celestial Beauty – I guessed that the numbers shown couldn’t possibly refer to multiples of the total bet, which eventually led me to revise my initial estimate of the game’s jackpot down from 100,000x the total bet to just 5,000x. There are three different Coloured Scatters on the paytable, all of which share equal returns of 100x the total bet for all six symbols. The high-paying symbols feature strange-looking creatures with payouts of 40x, 20x, or 15x the total bet for 12 scattered matching symbols anywhere on the screen. The medium-paying group include a Heart at 12.5x, the Sun at 10x, and the Moon at 7.5x, whilst the final low-paying group features simple Geometric Shapes with 12-symbol payouts of 5x, 3.75x, and 2.5x the total bet.
Celestial Beauty offers a wide betting range with minimum/maximum wagers of €0.20 and €200.00 per spin, respectively. The ‘coin bet’ mentioned in various places throughout the game refers to 1/20th of the total bet; therefore, a €10.00 wager implies a €0.50 coin bet.
Base Game & Modifiers
The scatter-pays mechanic utilised in Celestial Beauty is a relatively new development in the world of online slots. This style of game does away with traditional paylines and payways, and instead only requires you to hit eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the reels to score a win. The grid includes six columns of five rows each for a total of 30 symbol positions, meaning that you can theoretically win up to three times from a single symbol drop.
Heart Symbol
Whenever the winged heart symbol forms a win in the base game, a regular or multiplier wild symbol will be created to replace one of the winning symbols when they are removed from the reels. The multiplier wilds are not removed simultaneously as other winning symbols and persist throughout each game round, potentially allowing you to benefit from the multiplier several times.
Double Chance Bonus Bet
As the name suggests, the Double Chance feature will double the odds of triggering the free games at the cost of 25% extra on top of the normal price per spin. The paytable doesn’t mention if this affects the RTP, but assuming that the figure remains the same, I’d recommend playing with this option turned on.
Celestial Beauty Slot Bonus Features
Skywind has included three different sets of scatter symbols on the reels of Celestial Beauty, but as far as I can tell, it doesn’t matter which colour you hit as far as the bonus round is concerned. However, whenever I hit three scatters of any colour, the game offered me a choice of two free game features, so I suspect this was done just for visual effect.
Free Spins
There are two different free game modes, each with a different level of volatility. The ‘Moon Beauty’ is the low volatility option according to the paytable, but I’m not quite sure why that would be – this mode creates multiplier wilds whenever any of the four high-paying symbols are involved in a winning combination, whilst the supposedly higher-volatility ‘Sun Beauty’ mode only does so for the winged heart symbol.
In either case, winning combinations can now create multiplier wilds with values of 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, or 20x, and these symbols will again persist when other winning symbols are removed from the reels. Unfortunately, only one multiplier wild can be present on the reels simultaneously, which does dampen the potential of both modes substantially, in my view.
Bonus Buy
The two free games features are obviously the most rewarding and exciting parts of Celestial Beauty, so it’s pleasing to see that Skywind has included a bonus buy facility allowing you to go straight there… at a price! The cost to use this function is 100x the normal price per spin, and the number of triggering scatters is determined randomly after you make the purchase. So if you are lucky enough to hit the maximum six scatter symbols, you’ll instantly recover your buy-in before the feature starts!
Pros
- Gorgeous graphics and art style.
- The scatter-pay mechanic is fast, exciting, and simple to understand.
Cons
- The low maximum jackpot of just 5,000x the total bet.
- It’s unclear why the volatility of the Sun Beauty mode is supposedly higher than the Moon Beauty mode – the wording of the help files needs a serious boost in clarity!
Celestial Beauty Slot Review Final Thoughts
There’s a lot to like about Celestial Beauty, but if you are going to clone a popular game such as Starlight Princess, you really do need to make sure to get it right. In this case, the original is simply the better game - this makes it tough to recommend Skywind’s version, despite it being an above-average game on its own merits.
