Game Overview
Spicy food was one of my favourite treats when I was younger, but too many rough nights eating too much of it after a few bourbons have made it a bit of a chore nowadays. So what’s tastier than some salt and chilli pork ribs? Winning a 50,000x stake jackpot on Infinity Dragon’s new Chili Bonanza online slot, of course! This 243-payway machine offers a 96.33% RTP and has been published in association with Microgaming – usually a fair indication of a high-quality slot.
The X-UP part of the game’s title refers to the X-UP tokens that can be collected by hitting two scatter symbols during the base game. When this occurs, you’ll add 1x to the X-UP multiplier trail, which becomes active when the bonus round is eventually triggered by hitting three scatters. The X-UP multiplier can potentially reach as high as 50x, although you’d need to be exceptionally unlucky for an extended period of time for such a thing to occur. As an alternative, the developers allow you to purchase additional X-UP tokens after triggering the bonus round – known as the Upsizer feature. A full bonus buy facility is also available, although you’ll need to trigger a bonus once via regular gameplay before it becomes unlocked.

Chili Bonanza X Up Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I’m not entirely sure why Chili has become such a hot theme in the world of online slots – at a guess, it’s most likely the result of Big Time Gaming’s success with their Extra Chilli Megaways online slot. So what’s the difference between Chilli and Chili? Nothing at all, as far as I know – the spellings seem to be interchangeable, although the former is the more popular variant of the two. As far as the rest of the theme of this one is concerned, I think that I like the art style used in Chili Bonanza much more than the majority of the competition – the angry-looking vegetables are probably a little bit much, though!
At the top of the paytable, you’ll find the scatter and wild symbols, although the payouts for neither of them are particularly exciting. Three scatters pay just 2x the current stake, whilst a full payway of wilds still only gets you a tad over 4x your total bet. It’s a similar story with the regular symbols, too; I’m afraid – probably due to the huge multipliers available during the bonus round. The red chili has a return of 4x for a full payway of five of a kind, followed by the yellow, something, at 3.33x, the green pepper at 3x, the beetroot at 2.66x, and finally, the onion at 2.33x. At the bottom end of the table, you’ll find five typical royal symbols; the payouts for these range between 1x the bet for five tens up to a maximum of 1.66x for five aces. Yup, I think we’ll need those multipliers to win anything exciting from this slot, don’t you?
The available betting range in Chili Bonanza is a little smaller than I’ve become used to when playing online slots, with minimum/maximum permitted wagers of €0.30 and €12.00, respectively. On the plus side, there’s a good range of options between the two extremes.
Base Game & Modifiers
Immediately after opening Chili Bonanza for the first time, you’ll catch sight of a giant pot of chili bubbling away underneath the 5×3 reel set. To the right of this is the X-Up trail, which shows your progress as you collect chillies, hoping to obtain the maximum 50x free spin multiplier. All symbols require at least three matches starting from the leftmost reel to award a win.
X-up Feature
Landing two scatters awards one X-Up token collected in the meter we just discussed. The X-Up multiplier trail starts with modest values of 2x and 3x, but collecting additional chillies will allow you to reach much more respectable values of 10x, 25x, and even 50x.
Chili Bonanza X Up Slot Bonus Features
Bonus scatter symbols are only present on reels two, three, and four, and you’ll need to hit all three simultaneously to trigger eight free spins. If just one or two scatters hit together, they’ll be added to the X-Up multiplier trail instead.
Free Spins
The only real change in this part of the game is the addition of a global multiplier, although the value of this should not be underestimated in this case! If you haven’t collected many X-Up tokens before triggering the bonus round, then you can opt to purchase a few more via the ‘Upsizer’ feature before the bonus begins properly.
The cost of purchasing additional tokens is relatively high, though, in my experience – expect to pay several hundred times the current stake if you want to upgrade to either of the top two multiplier levels.
Bonus Buy
Should you opt to use the bonus buy facility, the X-Up multiplier is chosen randomly rather than using what you have collected on the trail. That makes the 100x cost of this option a real bargain in my eyes, although the paytable suggests that using it has no benefit in terms of the game RTP.
Pros
- X-Up multipliers make for a really exciting free spins feature – provided you can collect enough of them!
- Attractive and colourful graphics and theme.
- 100x bonus buy cost seems very fair.
Cons
- Purchasing additional X-Up tokens is prohibitively expensive.
- The bonus round doesn’t add much in the way of new features over and above what you get in the base game.
Final Thoughts
My initial reaction to this game was, ‘Oh, just more of the same’, although this did improve somewhat after I spent more time experimenting with it. The 50,000x jackpot is definitely on the larger side of what is currently available in the industry. The 50x multiplier available in the bonus round should give lucky players a real shot at getting there, too.
