Despite the name, this isn’t an Extra Chili clone, as many earlier licensed Megaways slots were, but a game with a new hook – albeit not a very innovative or unique one. Chilli Picante Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Chilli seems like a strange slot theme to me – well, a strange one to be so popular anyway! Big Time Gaming weren’t even the first to start this trend with their unbelievably popular Bonanza 2 slot, but they certainly were the ones to popularize it. I’m not keen on the whole model of licensing out your slot mechanics, but players seem to love these Megaways slots so much that they don’t seem to mind on this occasion. The graphics here are top notch, although the game runs horribly slowly on my high-end laptop – I’ve no idea why this is, games by other developers work just fine, and my smartphone and tablet have no trouble with the game either. Hopefully this is something that will be worked out before final release. Something tells me the Mexican jingle is here to stay though, so unless you like dancing round your garden in a sombrero pretending you have a full-on Mariachi band performing, you are going to be reaching for the mute button pretty quickly this time around.
Like most Megaways slots, don’t expect too much from the Paytable in Chilli Picante Megaways – there are a couple of higher paying symbols, but the main attractions are the red and blue chillies. If you’ve played the Fishin’ Frenzy games, you’ll be familiar with the blue squares which each have a prize attached to them – things work very much the same here, except it is the Chilli’s which have prizes attached to them and the fisherman has been replaced by a crazy Mexican looking dude who shakes his maracas until all of the chillies are magically pulled towards him. No, these aren’t euphemisms – this is actually what happens in-game. One thing that Chilli Picante Megaways has over Fishin’ Frenzy is the blue chilli’s don’t require the Mexican in order for you to receive their prizes – just having nine of them on screen is enough for you to win 1,000x your bet, and the prize table shown on screen during base gameplay shows the payout for lesser numbers of chillies too.
Another thing shared in common between this game and the recent BIG Catch release is the minimum and maximum bets, which are set at €0.10 and €10.00 per spin respectively. This is a very sensible betting range and I applaud Blueprint for not putting ridiculous max bet limits like €100.00 per spin into their recent games. It’s things like that which saw the UKGC remove fast play, auto play, and before long will probably see them making us wait 3 minutes between spins.
Base Game & Modifiers
Megaways games do not have a fixed playfield – instead, you have six reels here, each of which can split into 7 separate sections on a per-spin basis. Interestingly, I never actually saw a reel split into seven whilst testing – this could be an oddity of the slightly broken demo game, or it could imply that we aren’t actually getting the full number of Megaways this time around after all. If that turns out to be the case, we will be sure to update our review, though Blueprint does assure us in their pre-release materials that this game offers the full 117,649 maximum possible number of Megaways, so who are we to argue?
Blue Chillies Feature
As mentioned briefly above, Chilli Picante Megaways has a unique Ghost Chili symbol which appears in blue and awards between 1x and 1,000x your stake depending how many of them land on screen at once. The most I saw during testing was six, which pays 40x your stake, and the next step up is seven which pays 100x. Why do the red chillies still have the prizes left on them during the base game though? This really bugs me in Fishin’ Frenzy, too, as you can’t collect the prizes during the base game – they are only available in the main bonus round!
Chilli Picante Megaways Slot Free Spins Feature
The bonus round is a free spins feature that has the potential to go on for a real long time and deliver some explosive wins, but you are going to need to be lucky to see the best of it. Three scatters are the minimum required to enter the feature, but this only wins you ten free spins. This goes up to 15, 20, and 25 free spins for four, five, and six scatters respectively.
During free spins, all chillies that land on screen have a prize value attached to them, and if the Mexican man lands at the same time, he will draw in all of the prizes, and they will be added to your total for that bonus.
Additionally, for every four Mexican men which land onscreen, you will be awarded the extra free spins with an increasing multiplier from x2 all the way to x5 if you manage to land the maximum of 12 Mexican men. Good luck with this though – I didn’t even make it to the 3x multiplier despite at least a dozen bonus attempts during testing.
I’m not sure how realistic the 50,000x win cap is in this game – I simply don’t have enough data points to work with. I failed to win more than 1,000x my stake, but this isn’t surprising from just a couple of hours play. We’ll have to wait until the game has been out a while to learn just how much potential this title really has.

Chilli Picante Megaways surprised me – I’d lost hope for Blueprint and their Megaways obsession a while back, but they are coming back with some great slots in recent months. This one is definitely an improvement over their recent Fishin’ Frenzy – The BIG Catch, as the blue chillies add a whole lot more to gameplay than you might think. The bonus round felt a little bit tighter to me, although I suspect this is simply the result of the higher number of Megaways increasing the variance. If you like your slots super spicy, you are going to love this one.
