Game Overview
The PowerPlay Jackpot series of online slots is Playtech’s attempt to muscle in on the progressive jackpot scene, a category previously dominated by NetEnt and Microgaming. The latest entry in the PowerPlay Jackpot franchise is named Chilli Extreme; does anybody else feel as if the humble Chilli is a little bit overrepresented in the online slots industry?! I mean, I get it – chillies are hot, and your new slot is hot, but it just isn’t that clever, developers! Let’s be honest, though – this game can pay several million Euros, so who cares what it’s called! Chilli Extreme uses up to 262,144 payways and has a 95.17% RTP before the progressive jackpot contribution.
In addition to the jackpots, Chilli Extreme also includes several unique features triggered when specific symbols land on the reels. This includes the Pinata symbol, causing a chilli explosion, and the hot chillies symbol, which the paytable labels as “TNT” – I guess those are some seriously aggressive chillies! The game also features giant versions of all regular symbols, as well as a growing reel feature that will increase the number of payways each time the reel set expands.
You won’t be able to see the progressive jackpot feature in our free demo slot of Chilli Extreme, but everything else is waiting for you to explore below:
Chilli Xtreme Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Remember I said chillies were somewhat overrepresented in the slots industry? Let me give you a little example of what I mean! One of the most popular chilli-based games has to be Big Time Gaming’s Extra Chilli Megaways, and rightly so – it was one of the very first Megaways slots, after all! That game seems to have been the initiator for the broader trend, leading to a flood of similar machines such as Chilli Heat, Chilli Picante, Chilli Inferno, and many more. This machine, Chilli Extreme, does at least have its progressive jackpot aspect to act as a differentiator from all of those previous chilli-themed slots, and I have to say it’s a nice change of pace from the other big progressive jackpot games such as Mega Moolah and Mega Fortune.
This is one of those machines with an irritating paytable that fails to take the current wager configuration into account and does not tell you what the numbers shown actually mean! With some experimentation, I discovered that the payouts are listed in coins based on the minimum bet; This means that the highest-paying female character symbol is worth 2.5x the current bet for a full payway of six of a kind. The green character will pay you 1.5x the bet for a complete payway, while the blue dog is worth 1x for all six symbols. The taco and spirit bottle will each pay you 0.6x, whilst the rest of the paytable is made up of a variety of vegetables with payouts ranging between 0.2x and 0.3x the current bet for a complete payway.
Playtech often includes a vast betting range in their slots, and Chilli Extreme is no exception! The minimum bet is just €0.20, despite the huge number of pay ways, whilst those with larger bankrolls can choose to go all the way up to true nosebleed stakes and bet €200.00 per spin if they wish.
Base Game & Modifiers
When you first begin to play Chilli Extreme, the reel set will consist of six reels of four rows each. The game has 4,096 payways in this starting configuration, but new rows and pay ways can be unlocked by scoring winning combinations or via the hot chilli/TNT symbol. The highest-paying female character symbol will award a win for just two matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel, whilst all remaining symbols require at least three.
Pinata Symbol
When the Pinata symbol lands anywhere on the reels, it will stay on the playfield until all winning combinations have been evaluated. Next, the Pinata symbol will transform into a wild symbol, and a huge pinata will appear in the foreground of the machine. Clicking the pinata will cause it to explode, spreading chillies across the reel set and adding up to nine wild symbols in random positions.
Hot Chillies / Tnt Symbol
A bundle of three different coloured chillies labelled “HOT” is known as the TNT symbol, according to the paytable. Whenever this symbol lands, it will persist until all winning combinations have been evaluated. Next, the TNT will transform into a wild symbol before exploding, removing all adjacent regular symbols. When the TNT symbol explodes, it will cause an extra reel expansion, potentially creating additional winning combinations.
Giant Symbol
The regular symbols shown on the paytable can appear as 2×2 or 3×3 giant symbols. These giant symbols will crush and remove all 1×1 symbols directly underneath it, except for the WILD, BONUS, HOT CHILLI, or PINATA.
Chilli Xtreme Slot Bonus Features
The main bonus round is a free spin feature and awards between 10 and 25 free spins, depending on the number of triggering scatter symbols.
Free Spins
In this mode, the reel expansion feature has a “safety level”, which prevents the playfield from shrinking back down to the initial 6×4 configuration. The safety level increases each time a spin either results in a win or includes a hot chillies explosion.
As the safety level rises, it will guarantee that from the next spin onwards, the unlocked rows below will remain open for the duration of the bonus round. As the additional rows are unlocked, the number of payways will increase from 4,096 to 15,625, 46,656, 117,649, and finally, 262,144.
Chilli Xtreme Slot Review Final Thoughts
I have a sneaky suspicion that Playtech got their inspiration for this game from ELK Studio’s Gold series of slots; they even use the same “safety level” terminology in their bonus rounds! The only trouble is, I think that I preferred ELK’s game over this one!
Chilli Extreme is still plenty of fun, though, and you won’t find any progressive jackpots in ELK’s game either, so I’m sure the industry is big enough for the pair of them!
