Game Overview

Classic slots are everywhere, and in 2024, there seem to be more releases than ever. Are modern-style slots with innovative features becoming too complex, prompting a return to simpler gameplay? Who knows? But we have news of another classic-style slot released today, and that is Coin Charge from Platipus. This is a simple 3×3 slot with 5 paylines, a 95% RTP, and a 3,314x maximum win.

Before continuing, let’s clarify that Coin Charge is a fairly simple slot. If you’re expecting loads of bonus features, you might be disappointed. However, it does offer a main bonus game, which is a step up from many similar slots that don’t have one at all. In this bonus round, you can win instant prizes of up to 25x your stake. If you manage to fill every position on the grid with coin symbols, you’ll get a spin of the jackpot wheel, which awards one of four fixed jackpots. Ideally, you’ll land the top prize worth 3,000x your stake.

Sometimes, it’s best to give a slot a spin and see if it suits your style. Of course, many prefer to avoid risking real money to do that. That’s where slot demos come in handy – you can play for free without risk. Check out the Coin Charge demo below and see for yourself!

As I mentioned in the intro, classic slots seem to be making a comeback, or at least it feels that way, considering how many I’ve reviewed recently, and some have been pretty good, actually, so it’s not a bad thing. Chilli Joker and Firebird 81 are two slot titles from Synot Games that I really enjoyed, with both of these games offering some much easier gameplay without all the razzmatazz that can often be found in the more highly complex and volatile slots produced from the likes of Nolimit City.

Regular readers will know that the next stage of our review process is to look at the payouts on Coin Charge. There are 8 paying symbols in total, and the one with the best return is the Red Seven, which delivers a 30x the stake payout when landed 3 times across a payline. Next up is the Bar, which has a 20x return, while the Bell and Horseshoe both pay 16x. The Lemons, Plums, and Peaches are worth 4x, and the Cherries round things off with a meagre return of 1x

Trying your luck on Coin Charge and getting the reels spinning will cost you a minimum of €1.00 a play, reaching up to a maximum of €100.00. There are just five increments between those two values, so you’re not exactly blessed with staking options here, well, on the demo version of the slot, at least.

Base Game & Modifers

On the 3×3 gaming grid of Coin Charge, there are just 5 fixed paylines, and landing payouts is as simple (in practice) as landing three matching symbols across a payline from left to right. There are no cascades, multipliers, or anything else in the base game aside from wild symbols which substitute for regular symbols when winning combinations are possible.

Fortunately, while the base game is at best lacklustre, there is something to aim for when spinning the reels of Coin Charge, and that’s a Re-Spins bonus. Let’s look at what this can produce once it has been activated.

Respins Feature & Jackpot Wheel

Bonus symbols can appear on the reels holding multiplier values of 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, and 25x, and if three appear on the same spin, the Re-Spins feature triggers. You receive the value of the three triggering symbols as a multiplier of your stake and then receive three re-spins of the reels.

Each time a new coin symbol lands, you receive the payout of that coin, and your re-spins reset back to three. The reel positions where the symbols land also become highlighted, meaning that future symbols that land in those positions have their values multiplied by 2 before you’re paid. The feature ends when you run out of re-spins.

If all positions become highlighted during the bonus game, you receive a spin on the Jackpot Wheel, which guarantees one of the following jackpot wins:

  • Grand Jackpot: 3,000x
  • Major Jackpot: 150x
  • Minor Jackpot: 50x
  • Mini Jackpot: 25x

Bonus Buy

If you’re in a gambling mood, you can use the buy bonus feature to trigger the re-spins bonus. It costs 35x the current stake, which is fairly reasonable compared to similar bonus buys on other slots.

Pros

  • The buy bonus costs just 35x, which is a respectable cost compared to other slots.
  • An easy game to play that requires very little slot experience.

Cons

  • I cannot figure out why the RTP is 95% for a low variance slot with a mediocre maximum win.

Coin Charge Slot Review Final Thoughts

Coin Charge is one of those slots you just take at face value. It’s a 3x3 classic-style slot with a solid bonus game and four fixed jackpots. Will it fill you with excitement when playing? Probably not, but it's more than adequate for some simple, uncomplicated, and potentially lucrative slot gaming.
