Commander Of Tridents Slot (Hacksaw Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

For the second time folks, your eyes are not deceiving you; this is, in fact, the second slot we have featured on our site from provider Backseat Gaming, although you’ve probably already guessed there are heavy influences here from Hacksaw Gaming. Anyway, as for the game titled Commander of Tridents, we’ve got 19 fixed paylines, a 96.28% RTP, and a maximum win of 15,000x the total stake. Those are pretty good numbers, Backseat Gaming! Let’s hope the rest of the machine is as attractive as its jackpot!

Come and behold the wonders of the Ocean! Commander of Tridents is a 5×5 online slot that transports its players to an alternative world where you live under the sea in a kingdom where the Commander of the Sea rules supreme! That’s a nice story, Backseat, but what we want to know is how the wild tridents work. What are the magnificent sea creatures? And how do we find those so-called What are these ‘splendid treasures’? Having gone deep-sea diving (in a much more robust vehicle than the one which recently visited the Titanic… RIP), I can tell you that the Expanding Wild Triggers are activated by hitting trident symbols, which will then expand to cover their entire reel. As for the Mystery Gates (were those mentioned before?), those are stacked symbols which can cover an entire reel.

The legends surrounding Poseidon and his family are somewhat prolific in the world of online slots – his father, Cronus, hasn’t appeared in his own game for some reason, but he does at least play a part in Olympus Zeus Megaways. As for his brother Hades, he’s regarded as being the darkest and most dangerous of the bunch, so developers love to use him in games such as Olympus Hades Megaways. In fact, I’ll bet you guys ten penneth that the next game in that series will be titled Olympus Poseidon Megaways. I guess we’ll have to wait and see, won’t we?

Let’s talk about the paytable – I played at 1GBP per spin, and the top-paying symbol returned 15x my bet for a five of a kind combination. The green fish returned a little less at 10x, whilst the other two fishies are worth 6x and 4x, respectively. As for the low pays, we get an anchor, a trap, some sort of alien-looking creature, and some tumbleweed, all of which share identical returns of 5x the total bet for a five of a kind winning combination. Oh, and let’s not forget Poseisdon’s Trident! That sits at the bottom of the paytable for some reason, despite it being the most valuable symbol at 20x the total bet.

The betting range is typical of Hacksaw/Backseat Gaming – plenty of options at the bottom end, very few towards the upper limit. The minimum/maximum limits are €0.10 and €100.00 per spin, respectively.

Base Game & Modifiers

Commander Of Tridents Slot Base Game
Commander of Tridents slot base game

Commander of Tridents utilises an enormous playfield that uses a 5×5 reel configuration – this is a setup much more commonly used by grid slots, so Backseat Gaming’s choice to use 19 paylines is a curious one at first. I was expecting the symbols to be arranged in stacks to try and get around this, but that is not the case. Somehow Backseat has managed to arrange their paylines in such a manner that you don’t see anywhere near the count of dead spins, which a layout such as this would suggest. Of course, you’ll still need to catch three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels (that match the diagrams shown on the paytable) to score some winnings!

Expanding Wild Tridents

When a trident symbol lands, it will expand to cover the whole reel. Better yet, trident symbols are wild and substitute for everything else shown on the reels.

Mystery Gates

These symbols are not mentioned along with all of the other features shown at the top of the paytable – nevertheless, the Mystery Gate symbol is a three-high stacked symbol that will always move into full view regardless of where it lands. The symbol that the mystery gate transforms into depends on the symbols around it – it will always try to offer you the best possible win. Ie. Three of these symbols land on reels two to five; they will automatically transform into the symbols needed to complete your pay line. Neat, eh?

And now for the secret sauce – in this mode, treasure chests are used to trigger the main bonus round. Best keep a careful eye out for those then!

Commander Of Tridents Slot Bonus Features

Commander Of Tridents Slot Free Spins Feature

To win a bonus round, you’ll need to hit at least three scatter symbols simultaneously during a single game round. Three scatters award 10 free spins, whilst four or five symbols will get you 12 or 14 free spins, respectively

Free Spins

In this feature, all mystery gates become sticky for the remainder of the bonus after landing. Above each reel is a reel multiplier that starts inactive at 0x. When a Golden Temple symbol lands on a reel, the reel multiplier is increased by the value shown on the symbol. Golden temple symbols can have a value of 2x, 3x, 5x, or 10x.

Bonus Buy

The bonus buy facility is a little expensive in this one at 150x the normal price per spin, so you’ll need a well-stocked wallet to take advantage of it! If you do, you’ll probably be pleased though – it’s an excellent feature with bags of big win potential.

Pros

  • The huge jackpot of 15,000x the total bet.
  • Expanding symbols allow relatively big wins during the base game.

Cons

  • The bonus buy feature is more expensive than most other games.

Final Thoughts

I’m not quite sure on this one. Whilst this game certainly isn’t bad, it features far too many similarities between Push Gaming's Razor Shark and Mystery Mission to the Moon for it to really be considered as anything original. Your opinion may vary, of course, so be sure to give Commanders of Tridents a few spins yourself before making up your mind!
