Game Overview

I have many fond memories of watching Count Duckula when I was younger, which makes me somewhat bemused to discover that the show was actually a spin-off of Danger Mouse! Well, that’s at least what Wikipedia tells us these days – I’m not quite certain personally, which I would say makes for a great reason to re-watch the entire show in celebration of Blueprint Gaming’s Count Duckula Online Slot, wouldn’t you? As always, let’s start at the beginning – this is a 40-payline game from the popular Jackpot King Series of machines, boasts a theoretical maximum jackpot of 50,000x the total bet, and has a combined RTP of 93.50%, including its two progressive jackpot contributions.

The feature set includes the Jackpot King progressive bonus, which sees you collecting crowns to boost your multiplier in the hope of stealing the count’s priced treasures! We’re not finished yet though; there are four modifiers to experience in the base game and a further four bonus rounds that can be triggered too, which includes the Big Money Bonus, where big cash prizes can be won.

So, without further ado – I say we get ourselves in the room for some classic cartoons with a little nostalgic blast from the past… Castle Duckula, home for many centuries to a dreadful dynasty, the counts of Duckula! I think it’s fair to say that we’re all praying never to meet the counts of Duckula… unless it happens to come by way of our free demo slot of Count Duckula, available to play below:

I’m not entirely sure which category we should put Count Duckula in – sure, it’s a Dracula-themed machine, but that’s a pretty generous way of putting it, to say the least! It’s certainly no Blood Lust, for example. Fat Drac might be a better fit, but I think the real truth is that the most accurate genre we’re dealing with here is a cartoon-based slot such as Wild Coyote, or its newer iteration Fox Mayhem. However you classify it though, this game has a unique charm and re-creates the feel of the television show perfectly, so if you’re an 80’s kid, then I suspect you’ll absolutely love what Blueprint has done here.

A great theme is important for any online slot, but not as important as how well it pays – the top symbols here are the wild – a stake through the heart – along with Count Duckula himself, both of which will return a maximum of 2.5x the total bet for a full pay line of five. The Crown and Castle Transylvania are next, paying 1x the total bet for all five symbols, whilst a clock and coat of arms share payouts of 0.5x each. That just leaves us with the lower-paying symbols – five aces or kings will get you 0.6x back in winnings, whilst the queens and jacks are a little less valuable at 0.4x each.

As for the betting range, minimum/maximum bets of €0.20 and €200.00 per spin are permitted, but there aren’t many other bets between those limits, which could present a problem for some players.

Base Game & Modifiers

Count Duckula Slot Base Game
Count Duckula slot base game

The base game of Count Duckula uses a traditional 5×3 video slot layout, which is plenty sufficient for the game’s 20 fixed paylines. It’s even better when the payline count increases to 40 – but more on that one later! Wins are awarded for hitting three or more adjacent matching symbols on a pay line starting from the left, and the game offers you a generous helping hand with achieving this by means of its five base game modifiers.

Duckula Wild

Dracula will walk onto the playfield, despatching additional wild symbols onto the reels by foolishly dropping his tray of wild champagne – seriously, why give the waiter’s job to someone without opposable thumbs?!

Igor Mystery Potion

Another tray-carrying luddite, Igor, is known in the show for his hapless antics, so you’ll probably not be surprised to see him drop his tray of potions – leaving a whole bunch of wild symbols in his wake!

Nana Colossal Wild

Nanny may walk onto the screen, and, as for her ‘plump’ size, she’ll create a giant 3×3 wild symbol as she does. Stereotypical, much? I have a feeling that the woke brigade would never allow such a character to exist nowadays!

Duckula’s Winged Winspin Wild

After any spin, Duckula will walk onto the stage and call for his bats to whisk away symbols and replace them with jackpot symbols.

Count Duckula Slot Bonus Features

The ‘fifth’ modifier mentioned on the paytable isn’t actually a modifier at all; it’s the game’s primary bonus round. This occurs when three bonus scatter symbols land anywhere on the reels, and whilst they do not have any payout of their own, they can still be extremely valuable.

Before the bonus round begins, you’ll be presented with a bonus selector screen to determine where you will sit in the hall of fame. There are four bonuses available here, and unless you are awarded the top feature, you can gamble your current position for the next bonus on the ladder. Beware though, if you lose, you will only receive a mystery cash amount.

Features & Bonuses

  • Tombstone Bonus: Players will be presented with several tombstones. They will then choose from these, each revealing a cash amount. However, once Dr Van Goosing is revealed, the feature will end.
  • Ancestor Pick Me Bonus: The Ancestor bonus will see you pick from picture frames on the wall; behind each will be a multiplier amount. Reveal 3 Duckula’s to go to the super bonus, but beware of Dr Van Goosewing, as revealing him will end the bonus.
  • Dr Van Goosewing Free Spins: Ten free spins will be awarded for this bonus, and each wild that lands on the reels will become sticky for the duration of the feature.
  • Wild Heart Free Spins: Ten free spins are awarded across 40 paylines for this bonus. The aim is to collect as many heart wild symbols as possible, with each that is collected being stored on the right-hand side of the reels. Once the 10 spins have ended, a super spin will be awarded; this will see all of your collected hearts added to random positions on the reels. It is possible to re-trigger the super spin multiple times, and this is decided through a pick-me bonus that will reveal spin again or collect.
  • Duckula’s Big Money Bonus: If you reach the big money bonus, you will get to spin on a wheel and win some big money multipliers. Each segment of the wheel that has been landed on will turn into a Dr Van Goosewing segment. The bonus will end when you land on him.

Jackpot King

During any spin, jackpot king symbols can appear overlaid on top of reels one through five. When this occurs, you’ll need to accumulate a maximum of 15 crown symbols to get yourself a chance of hitting one of the progressive jackpots.

Pros

  • As an 80s kid, I love anything based on a film or tv show from that period – that’s definitely a ‘pro’ for me, although perhaps not for everyone!
  • Jackpot King progressive jackpots can award stunning payouts, even on low bet sizes.
  • Five different bonus rounds to explore.

Cons

  • Base game payouts aren’t the best.
  • Some of the bonus rounds are much more generous than others, which can be very frustrating if you are unlucky several times in a row!

Final Thoughts

I love the fact that they included a few theme tune snippets – something you often don’t see in these licensed slots, especially ones that date back as far as this. I mean, what was Knight Rider without Kit? Great presentation then, but the payouts leave something to be desired, and you just aren’t likely to see the best features enough times to make this game truly worthwhile. The theme alone should be enough to carry it in the short term, however – who doesn’t love Count Duckula?!
