It didn’t take long for me to conclude that Cubes is a deceptively simple online slot. The standard reel set is a perfect square comprised of five columns with five rows each, in the centre of which lies the Middle Multiplier. If this cube is part of a winning cluster, its value will be multiplied by the value shown; that value, in turn, is determined by the number of cubes that make up the winning cluster. Every win will cause the playfield to expand up to a maximum size of 11×11. Hit five clusters in different colours, and you’ll trigger 10 free spins, where an instant jackpot of 2,500x the total bet can be won.

Cubes Slot Theme Stakes, Pays & Symbols
The only other game I could find in our review library featuring the term ‘geometric shapes’ was ELK Studios title Cygnus 2, which turned out to be an interesting game to compare against Cubes! The games produced by ELK are often big hits with slot enthusiasts but are sometimes way too complicated for a typical recreational player. On the other hand, Cubes was specifically designed to appeal to recreational players rather than the hardcore crowd! After spending a few hours testing the game, I’m pleased to report that Hacksaw seems to have got the balance just right – the game is simple enough to appeal to everyone, but it’s also deep enough to keep things interesting over the long term.
The symbols used in Cubes couldn’t be much simpler – there are just six of them, all represented by coloured blocks. No one colour is worth any more than the rest – a cluster of 25 or more adjacent matching symbols of any kind will net you 40x your total bet. That’s probably a tough ask with the default playfield size of 5×5, but it starts to seem much more realistic when the grid expands to its maximum size of 11×11! Smaller clusters of 20-24 symbols will get you 32x the total bet, whilst 15-19 have a payout of 24x. The smallest prizes of 0.1x are awarded for clusters of just five symbols.
The minimum/maximum betting limits have been set at €0.20 and €100.00 per spin, respectively, with plenty of intermediate bets between the two extremes. So, whether you’re a high roller or playing with a lower budget, you’ll comfortably be able to find a stake to suit your bankroll.
Base Game & Modifiers
Cubes is a cluster pays game, meaning there are no traditional paylines or payways. Instead, the goal is to match five or more connecting symbols of matching colour anywhere on the playfield. Prizes vary according to the number of symbols included in each cluster.
Every time a new win is achieved, the grid will expand in all directions up to a maximum size of 11×11. When this occurs, new cubes will be added on all four sides of the existing playfield, which may result in additional symbols being added to existing winning clusters. Therefore, the total payout for each round is only evaluated once the playfield expansion phase has concluded.
Middle Multiplier
The cube in the centre of the reels contains a random multiplier. If this cube forms part of a winning cluster, that win will be multiplied by the number shown, plus 1x for each cube that makes up the winning cluster. The maximum achievable multiplier is 22x.
Cubes Slot Bonus Features
The free spins feature of Cubes is not triggered by traditional scatter symbols. Instead, you’ll need to hit five winning clusters of different colours during a single game round. Whenever this is achieved, you will be rewarded with ten free spins.
Free Spins
Before your free spins begin, the game will choose a random colour as the sticky symbol for the current bonus round. Winning combinations of the selected colour will not be removed from the reels for the duration of the feature, making it much easier to accumulate a large number of adjacent matching symbols. In this mode, the size of the grid can only increase and does not shrink between each spin.
Colour Blast
During the free spins feature, it is relatively easy to grow the playfield to its maximum size of 11×11, making for a total of 121 symbol positions. Accumulating a single cluster of 70 or more winning symbols will award an instant jackpot prize of 2,500x the total bet.
Cubes Slot Review Final Thoughts
With this deceptively simple online slot, Hacksaw has managed to tap into the appeal of puzzle games such as Columns and Tetris. It’s a shame that the top win has been capped at just 3,000x the total bet, though – let’s hope they increase that for Cubes 2 and give players something really exciting to get their teeth into.
