Game Overview
I had absolutely no idea what the word Densho referred to before coming across the Densho slot by Hacksaw Gaming. After searching for the word via our old friend Google, it seems that it’s a term of remembrance used to remind people of the horrors of the forced incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War 2. The red/black imagery used for the symbols here strikes a sombre tone but also looks great at the same time – in some ways, I feel that Hacksaw is brave to name a slot Densho, but at the same time, I feel like they’ve done an excellent job with the visuals and overall tone of the machine. As for the vitals, this 10-payline machine has a standard RTP of 96.40% and a maximum jackpot prize of 10,000x the total bet.
The word ‘Densho’ does have other definitions too, of course, and Hacksaw describes this game as being an enchanting world where beautiful depictions of the natural world will accompany you on a mission to shape your legacy. That sounds quite dramatic, doesn’t it? The headline feature of the machine is its wild multiplier reels – these can be generous during the base game but are even more exciting during the bonus round, where they gain progressively increasing multiplier values.
This slot certainly does have an interesting setup – opting for just ten paylines on an enlarged playfield such as this is a curious choice, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by just how well the game has turned out. You can try our free Densho slot below.
Densho Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Japan-themed slots come in many forms – we’ve had a batch of Shinobi-themed games in recent months (shout out to everybody who knows why The Legend of Musashi should be included in that category!) as well as other ninja-style slots like Jade Shuriken. For me, those types of games are much more interesting than bog standard Far Eastern games with Chinese lanterns and other such run-of-the-mill imagery. Densho sits somewhere in between the pack – it certainly looks authentic, and the red/black colour scheme gives me a sense that Hacksaw understand the connotations of their title all too well – perhaps these colours were chosen to provide Densho with a kind of “Schindler’s List” vibe?
The most valuable symbols in the Densho slot are the male character and the wild, both of which share equal returns of 20x the total bet for a full payline of five of a kind. There’s a female character who has a payout of 15x attached for all five of her symbols, followed by 12.5x for the owl, and 10x for two more symbols – one of these is a bridge, whilst I can’t quite make out what the other one is meant to be! Japanese Kanji characters have been used for the low-paying symbols – it would be quite clever if these were actually royals written in the Japanese language, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to confirm if that is the case using Google Translate! All five of them share equal payouts of just 2x the total bet. These payouts do seem small for a ten-line slot, but keep in mind that this machine has wild multiplier reels – see the Densho section below for details.
The range of available bets mirrors that of every other Hacksaw title have played recently – the minimum/maximum permitted limits are €0.10 and €100.00 per spin, respectively.
Densho Slot Base Game
As mentioned in the opening paragraphs, Hacksaw’s Densho slot utilises an extended playfield with five reels and four rows rather than the more traditional three. Some symbols do appear in stacks, which is useful for helping you to win on multiple pay lines simultaneously, but you are undoubtedly going to need a couple of those special multiplier wild reels in order to get close to the top prize of 10,000x the total bet.
Wild Multiplier Reels
Three Densho symbols are included in the slot, all of which feature images of a bird in flight. The easiest way to tell the common, rare, and legendary Densho apart is to look at the bottom of these symbols, as they each show between one and three dots as part of their surrounding circle denoting their status.
Densho symbols will expand to cover their entire reel after landing, and the common variety can multiply your winnings by up to 10x. The ‘rare’ Densho increases this value up to 50x, whilst the ‘legendary’ symbols max out at an impressive 100x. Should more than one of these symbols land simultaneously, their values will be added together before being applied to your winnings. This can result in a maximum multiplier of 160x.
Densho Slot Bonus Features
There are two possible free spin modes available in Hacksaw Gamings’ Densho – hitting three scatter symbols will award ten regular spins, whilst four scatters will upgrade your bonus to the more valuable super mode. As far as I can tell, it’s not possible to hit a five-scatter trigger.
Free Spins Feature
In this mode, each reel has a progression tracker displayed above it, which indicates the lowest possible quality of Densho symbol that can land on that reel. You’ll also find new upgrade symbols during the free spins, and collecting these will eventually ensure that only rare and legendary Densho can land on that reel. The more symbols you collect, the better your chances of receiving the higher multiplier values.
The ’super’ free spins are awarded if your triggering combination includes four scatter symbols, and in that case, all progression trackers will automatically be upgraded to their second level before your bonus game even begins. The bonus can be re-triggered with two or four additional spins by hitting two or three scatter symbols, respectively.
Bonus Buy
As with most Hacksaw slots, there are multiple bonus buy options to investigate in Densho:
- Bonushunt Featurespins (3x Bet) – Increases the odds of triggering a bonus by 400%. This is effectively a bonus bet.
- Densho Featurespins (50x Bet) – Every spin guarantees that at least two Densho symbols will land.
- Free Spins (100x Bet) – The regular three-scatter bonus trigger with 10 free spins starting at level one.
- Super Free Spins (250x Bet) – Skip the first progression tracker level and buy yourself 10 super free spins – if you can afford it!
Pros
- The art style is beautiful and much more interesting than typical Far-Eastern slots.
- Above average maximum jackpot of 10,000x the total bet.
- The top prize can be won in every part of the slot.
Cons
- The base payouts are very low for a ten-line machine.
- Wins can sometimes be infrequent due to the extended playfield and low number of pay lines.
