I was sure I recognised both the name and the music, and after just a few seconds, I suddenly remembered why that was – the developer had produced a near-identical machine several years back. After a little more investigation, I discovered that this is a nine-line game rather than the 243 ways offered in the earlier release, meaning that this isn’t just a refresh of the old game. The RTP is a healthy 96.61%, whilst the top win is given as €90,000, equating to 5,000x your bet at max bet.
The intro screen gives us a nice overview of the games’ features. There’s a wild reel modifier that awards up to three fully stacked wild reels, a mystery bonus feature, and even a random cash award bonus that throws some extra scratch your way because it’s feeling generous! The main bonus round is a free spins affair, and whilst there are no prizes for originality in that respect, it can award a maximum of 50 free spins, which is plenty generous in my eyes!

Let’s be honest, the “mad scientist” is something of a trope in popular culture nowadays, but it’s also one that is vague enough to be open to a world of interpretation. If I’m honest, I expected to find many more games in our back catalogue with a similar theme – perhaps I just didn’t come up with the right search terms, as Freaky Friday and Alive Megaways were not really what I was expecting. Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein, Back to the Future… these are all great mad scientist stories! Where are the online slots based on these legendary tales, slot developers? Games with nine or ten paylines often have the most impressive paytables, but this is because these wins are much harder to hit than those available in games featuring hundreds of payways. That’s not to take anything away from Dr Watts Up, however, and it’s great to see a top prize of 555x your bet for a full payline of the top-paying wild symbol. There’s a significant drop down to the next symbol, however, as the doctor is worth just 111x your total stake for a five of a kind combination of his symbols. His female assistant will pay you 100x the bet for a full payline, whilst his robot assistant is worth 88x. I’m unsure whether the monkey is his friend or an assistant, but he’s the last of the high-paying symbols and has a return of 77x your bet for all five symbols. There are four more medium-paying symbols represented by various science-looking equipment, and these have returns ranging between 22x and 66x your bet. The medium-paying symbols are all surrounded by a circular dotted line, which is a useful way of differentiating them from the lower-paying symbols.
You can choose to bet from a minimum of €0.09 per spin up to a maximum of €18.00, and whilst some may lament not having the option to wager a little more than this, I would suggest that this is a more than adequate betting range for a high-volatility nine-line slot.
Base Game & Modifiers
There doesn’t appear to be anything special about Dr Watts Up when you first begin to play, but as we all know, first impressions can be deceiving! The game does use a standard 5×3 playfield with nine fixed paylines, but the logo banner shown above the main reel set hides an additional horizontal row where special bonus prizes can be found.
Feature Tube
There are four special prizes which can appear above reel five during the base game: Wild Reel, Free Spins, Mystery, and Cash. These prize containers will move one position to the left on each spin unless they are collected by hitting a wild symbol directly underneath the prize. Multiple containers can be collected on a single spin, whilst any containers not collected when they reach the first reel will be lost.
- Wild Reel: The wild symbol will expand to cover up to three entire reels.
- Free Spins: A ten free spin bonus round is awarded.
- Cash: Awards a random cash prize of 2x, 3x, 5x, 10x, 20x, 40x, or 100x.

There are no traditional scatter symbols included in Dr Watts Up. Instead, the bonus round is activated via the Feature Tube described in the previous section. This means you need to land a wild symbol directly below a free spins container to trigger ten free spins.

After triggering the free spins feature, a prize container will be added above every reel. A new container is guaranteed to be added above the fifth reel on every spin, ensuring that you will collect far more containers in this mode than you ever could during the base game.

I really enjoy nine and ten payline slots, so for me, this version of Dr Watts Up is a definite improvement over the older one. If you share my love of games with a low number of paylines, then Dr Watts Up should definitely earn a place on your to-do list.
