Dragon Hatch 2 (PG Soft) Slot Demo & Review

Many slot providers will pump out frequent sequels to previous releases, whether they are deserving of one or not. Generally, PG Soft do not tend to do this very often; perhaps their developers have so many fresh ideas lined up that they don’t need to do so. However, on occasion, they will revisit a previous creation, usually when the first iteration has been so popular and successful that they’re almost obliged to do so. That’s the case with the game we’ll be exploring today. It’s based on the original Dragon Hatch, which has proved to be a raging success. Let’s see what changes have been made to build on that. It’s predictably titled Dragon Hatch 2 and is a medium volatility, 5-reel, 5-row video slot featuring an RTP of 96.76% and a potential maximum win of 2,500x.

Whenever we look at a sequel, it will inevitably be compared to its predecessor, so let’s address that first and foremost. The standout difference on the face of it is the maximum win on offer, with the original coming in at 15,000x and the sequel weighing in a lot lighter at only 2,500x. There has also been a slight reduction in the RTP in this new version, which sits marginally lower than the 96.83% seen in the first game. So, it’s not off to the best of starts, but perhaps the gameplay has been improved? Well, I’m pleased to report that it certainly has. You’ll instantly notice the improved graphics, and another significant change is the sticky wild that has been plonked bang in the centre of the 5×5 grid and remains there on every spin. The cascading reels mechanism is also a prominent feature, with any symbols involved in a win being removed and replaced by others. This is an important aspect of the game, as any symbols involved in a win will contribute to a bar above the reels, which, when it reaches a specific number, will activate a feature such as symbol removal, symbol add, or random wilds.

Maybe you’re a big fan of the original Dragon Hatch and have been eagerly awaiting this release, or perhaps you’ve never played it before. Either way, it would certainly be worth checking out for yourself to see what all the fuss is about. You can find the Dragon Hatch 2 demo slot below, and it’s entirely free to play!

Dragon Hatch has been one of PG Soft’s most popular releases to date, and you can understand why after taking it for a spin. It’s a medium volatility, 5×5 grid game with an RTP of 96.83% and a potential maximum win of 15,000x. Read on for my conclusion on which is the better version between the old and the new, or fire them both up and judge for yourself. One of the prominent features of both games is the cluster pays format, which can also be seen in many other titles from this provider. One of the best is Alchemy Gold, a medium volatility video slot which takes the cluster pays system one step further, with any symbols involved in a win sticking in place while the reels spin again, potentially adding more and more until the whole screen is filled. Make sure you check it out, but not before joining me in the rest of this review, which takes us over to the pays section next.

To receive the highest payout value for each symbol, you are required to match 22 or more. That may be a big ask, as that’s almost a full screen, but we’ll use that as a guide to gauge the power of each symbol. The top symbol is the Dragon Eye, and it certainly packs a punch, returning a whooping 2,000x the stake value for 22+ symbols. Next up, it’s the Earth, Water, and Fire Dragons, which are all worth 400x. These are followed by the non-premium symbols, the Spade, Club, Heart, and Diamond, which will all pay 200x for a cluster of 22 or more.

Finally, let’s investigate the stake possibilities on Dragon Hatch 2. These start from a low of €0.20 and rise to a high of €100.00, with plenty of well placed options in between that perfectly cater for both low and high rollers looking to try the slot out for real money.

Dragon Hatch 2 Slot Base Game & Modifiers

There is no need to worry about paylines on Dragon Hatch 2, as all that’s required to achieve a win is to match at least four of the same symbols touching in a cluster anywhere on the screen. These can be formed in any shape or direction. Any symbols involved in a win will be removed from the grid, creating space for further symbols to drop into play from the top of the reels, hopefully helping to create further wins. The sticky wild that is always located in the centre of the grid will count as one of the symbols if it is touching the formation.

Above the main reels, a collection bar graphic is displayed. The number of symbols involved in any winning combination will be added to this bar, and several feature activations will occur once it reaches a specific number, as described below. The progress of this bar will reset at the end of each spin.

Collect Bar

  • Earth Dragon Feature: Collecting 10 or more symbols will award the Earth Dragon feature, which removes all low paying symbols currently on the reels.
  • Water Dragon Feature: Collecting 30 or more symbols will award the Water Dragon feature, which adds a full reel stack of randomly selected premium symbols on both reels 2 and 4.
  • Fire Dragon Feature: Collecting 55 or more symbols will award the Fire Dragon feature, which adds a wild symbol to a randomly selected grid position on reels 1, 2, 4, and 5.
  • Dragon Queen Feature: Collecting 80 or more symbols will award the Dragon Queen feature, which adds a sticky wild symbol to all 4 corners of the grid and converts all symbols on the reels into randomly selected premium symbols.

Pros

  • It has improved graphics and gameplay.
  • The persistent sticky wild helps with frequent wins.
  • Lots of base game hits and feature activations

Cons

  • Lower maximum win and RTP than the original.

Dragon Hatch 2 Slot Review Final Thoughts

When I first noticed that the maximum win had been cut from 15,000x on the original to just 2,500x on this sequel, I was quite shocked. I wondered why PG Soft would shoot themselves in the foot like that. But after a while testing the new game, I think I understand why. It’s made it a lot more playable; with that top end now distributed out in smaller value wins throughout the game, it’s a lot more fun to play, feels like it pays out more frequently, and makes you believe that a jackpot hit is a realistic possibility. I mean, a big top prize is nice to see, but who’s ever won one, right? That aside, the gameplay and graphics are a definite improvement, and the sticky wild in the centre of the grid is very useful to help the wins continue and contribute to growing the collection bar, whose features activate regularly and are great fun. A solid and worthy follow up.
