Game Overview

Oh dear, the moment I powered up Dreadworks, heard the chilling soundtrack in the background and saw one of those video game ‘adjust the slider until you can barely see the image’ requests, I knew what was coming. Yes, folks, Print Studios has delivered a proper jump-scare horror slot in time for Halloween and not just one of those cute and cuddly clones of previous slots with ‘Halloween’ added to the end of their title that certain other developers release. Dreadworks is dark, spooky, and is themed of demonised tools in a similar style to a certain Annabelle or Chucky. It is a 5×4 slot with 26 paylines, a 96.08% RTP, and a 20,000x the stake maximum win.

I might be the only one, but if I want to play a spooky slot on Halloween, this is the kind of spooky I want. One that questions whether I should turn the light back on or the slot’s audio off. We’re adults playing slot games, not kids playing video games – so we can handle it (usually). Dreadworks is dark and gritty, and the soundtrack plays its part to create an atmosphere you’re glad is on the other side of the screen. As for the features, there are SuperSpinners between the reels that can multiplier symbol wins and jack-in-the-Box Wild symbols that can boost those multipliers or add new symbols to the reels. Both of those features carry over into a free spins bonus where the aim is to land low-value wins – you heard that right. Each time a low-value symbol forms a win, it’s removed, and once all are gone, the Big Jack Clown appears to cover between 3 and 5 reels and reveal the same instances of matching symbols.

Right, turn your lights on or off, whichever you prefer, sit back, and enjoy the scary action in the Dreadworks slot demo below.

Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Dreadworks Slot paytable

The last thing slot developers want to do is give you a reason not to play their titles, so it’s kind of understandable not too many release proper horror-themed slots. There are examples of it being done before, however, with Print Studios themselves creating the nail-biting Darkness. Nolimit City has also dabbled with the darker side of slot creativity with titles such as Book of Shadows and Possessed. Aside from those, however, genuine horror slots are few and far between.

If I can stump up the courage, the next port of call is to check out what these creepy dolls and other symbols on the reels of Dreadworks are worth in terms of payouts. Wild symbols share the top spot with the Blonde-Haired Doll, with both returning 50x the stake for five in a row. The Black-Haired Doll is next up with a 10x max reward, while the Bald Doll tops out at 6x. The last of the premiums are the Teddy Bear and the Spinning Top, which return 5x and 4x, respectively. The A, Y, T, O, and G symbols have max returns of 2x, 1.6x, 1.4x, 1.2x, and 1x, respectively.

Before spinning the reels of Dreadworks, aside from gathering the nerve, you’ll have to choose a spin bet of between €0.10 and €50.00 per spin, which is a betting range that should comfortably cater for both low and high rollers.

Base Game & Modifiers

Dreadworks slot base game

Sat on top of one of the darkest slot backgrounds I’ve ever seen (or perhaps I set it too dark at the start) is a 5-reel and 4-row gaming configuration that comprises 26 paylines. Winning combinations are created when three or more matching symbols land on a payline from left to right.

Superspinners

In between the reels are SuperSpinners that can hold multiplier values. If a winning combination crosses through one or more of these SuperSpinners, the multiplier values are applied to the payouts.

Regular Wilds & Jack In The Box Wild Symbols

Wild symbols can appear anywhere on the reels and will substitute for all regular symbols when they can help create or enhance a winning combination. As for Jack-in-the-Box Wilds, these do the same but can also do a couple of other things. They hold values that can boost the SiperSpinner win multiplier values, while randomly, the Jack in the Box can spring upon to add random Symbols to the reels – potentially creating a winning combo.

Dreadworks Slot Bonus Features

Dreadworks slot free spins feature

Waiting to jump out at you without any given notice is a free spins bonus. It triggers when three or more scatter symbols land in any position on the reels during the same spin.

Free Spins Feature

In return for 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols, you’ll receive 5, 7, or 9 free spins, respectively. Whenever wins are formed using low-paying symbols, you’ll receive an additional spin, and all instances of that symbol are removed from the reels for the duration of the bonus game.

If you manage to remove all low-paying symbols from the reels, you receive an additional 4 free spins and trigger the Big Jack feature. By the way, those low-pays spell out G, O, T, Y, A, and removing all triggers a Big Jack symbol that expands to cover 3, 4, or 5 reels for the rest of the feature, showing randomly chosen matching pay symbols on each spin.

Feature Bet & Bonus Buy Options

Using the feature bet feature located to the right of the reels, you can choose to pay for one of the following:

  • Scatter Boost: Costs 1.2x the current stake.
  • Enhanced Scatter Boosts: Costs 10x the current stake.
  • Free Spins Bonus: Costs 99x the current stake.

Pros

  • Authentic horror theme with a genuinely chilling atmosphere.
  • Nice blend of features combined with a max win of 20,000x.

Cons

  • The dark theme might be too intense for some players.

Dreadworks Slot Review Final Thoughts

Dreadworks is spine-tingling, unsettling horror at its finest, complete with creepy dolls, demonic tools, and a chilling soundtrack that keeps you on edge. It's a refreshing change for players tired of the same old “spooky” slots that offer more giggles than scares. It’s not all scares for little reward, however, as features such as SuperSpinners and Jack-in-the-Box wilds can combine to create some worthwhile returns, while the free spins bonus, particularly once Big Jack is triggered, can deliver even bigger.

  1. I’ve been looking forward to Halloween slots coming out, and Dreadworks is a good start. It’s not just a slapped-together Halloween clone thankfully. The SuperSpinners and Jack-in-the-Box Wilds keep the gameplay interesting. Book of Shadows, is another fav of mine, and I am switching between the two now. I wonder what else is coming.
