Drunken Sailors Demo Slot (Slotmill) Slot Demo & Review

It’s always fun to try a game from a developer you haven’t encountered before, and what could be more fun than a game based around Drunken Sailors? I’m hoping to find a bottle of rum or two whilst on the adventure myself! First impressions were great; special praise must be given to the graphics which are very well drawn and look especially sharp on smaller screens. Slotmill’s latest is a 40-fixed payline online slot with an RTP of 96.14% and a maximum win of 5,000x your bet.

I began testing Slotmill’s Drunken Sailors and soon found the time running away from me – the bonus buy feature is a real plus for players who are permitted to use it, whilst the bonus round itself is especially addictive, pulling me back for “one more try” time and time again. A mystery symbol modifier and mystery re-spin feature will keep you entertained during regular play.

Paytable For Drunken Sailors Slot

Pirates make for a seemingly unlimited source of inspiration to online slot developers. There are dozens of great games using this theme including hits such as Hooks Heroes, Chests o’Plenty, and Pirates Plenty Megaways. I guess the big question would be – how does Drunken Sailors online slot compare with these previous big-name releases? And the answer, for me, was extremely well.

Let’s start with the paytable – the scatter symbols have no payout attached to them, something which looks as if it may become the standard soon, but this qualm aside things are otherwise promising. The wild pays more than all the regular symbols at 37.5x your stake for five-of-a-kind, whilst all the standard high-paying symbols utilize pictures of pirates. The purple pirate takes pride of place with a return of 20x for all five, followed by the scary looking red guy at 10x, the captain Hook-like yellow pirate at 7.5x, and the hapless green dude at 6x. These are all very reasonable for a game with 40 fixed pay lines, and I always felt like the returns were fair whilst I was testing the game for this review.

The minimum bet is set at a low roller-friendly €0.20 per spin whilst the maximum wager per spin is an enormous €50.00. This should be more than enough for any player, I suspect! Thankfully, there is no chance of accidentally hitting a “max bet” button with such a large upper bet, as the game uses two simple arrow controls or choosing your current stake.

Base Game & Modifiers

Drunken Sailors Online Slot From Game Provider Slotmill Features 40 Fixed Paylines And Wins Up To A Maximum Of 5,000x Bet

The regular game of Drunk Sailors online slot takes place on a 5×4 playfield with the 40 pay lines spread evenly across the reels. Wins are awarded for hitting three or more matching symbols from left-to-right, with much of the games RTP being reserved for the larger five-of-a-kind combinations. By concentrating the RTP in this way, Drunken Sailors can return small wins reasonably frequently whilst still having bigger hits worth getting excited about higher up the paytable.

Mystery Symbol Modifier

We’ve seen mystery symbols explode in popularity since the success of Big Time Gaming’s Megaways slot design, and Drunken Sailors video slot includes its own take on the feature. The mystery symbols are included on the third reel during base gameplay and all reels during the free spin bonus rounds. Any mystery symbols present on screen at the end of a spin will be treated to a bottle of rum thrown by one of the pirates, converting all mystery symbols into the symbol where the bottle lands. Cross your fingers the bottle hits a wild symbol, especially during free spins!

Mystery Respin

During the base game only, mystery symbols landing on reel three will also trigger the mystery re-spin feature. All mystery symbols will be locked in place before up to 19 further mystery symbols will be added to the reels. The mystery symbols don’t appear very often during regular play, but when you do see them there’s a tonne of potential for a big win here!

Burst Mode Feature

This is an unusual one – whilst many jurisdictions are banning autoplay functionality altogether, Slotmill has gone the other way by including an even faster autoplay mode in their games. In this mode, the standard reels are hidden from view and the game will simply show you how much you have won from each spin in quick succession. If you really want to play fast (without using the bonus buy feature) then it doesn’t get much faster than this.

Drunken Sailors Slot Bonus Features

Land A Minimum Of 3 Scatter Symbols In The Base Game On Drunken Sailors To Trigger The Free Spins Bonus

There may not be any cash payouts for hitting the scatter symbols in Drunken Sailors, but you do at least get some extra free spins when you hit more than three of them. Three scatters award the minimum of eight spins, whilst four and five will increase this to ten and twelve free spins respectively.

Free Spins Feature

Both free spin features utilize a different reel set which includes plenty of mystery symbols on all five reels. For the duration of your bonus round, any mystery symbols which land on screen will be locked in place and remain sticky for the remainder of your free spins. If you manage to fill an entire reel with mystery symbols, one additional free spin is added to your remaining counter.

Super Free Spins Feature

If you are lucky enough to catch a mystery symbol at the same time as three or more bonus scatter symbols you will trigger this enhanced bonus round instead of the regular free spin feature. At the start of “super free spins”, 4-19 mystery symbols will be added to the reels before you begin to play.

I never saw anywhere near 19 mystery symbols added whilst I was testing this game, but somewhere in the region of around eight symbols appears to be about average. As with the regular free spin feature, any extra mystery symbols which land during this mode will become sticky and join your initial reel symbols in place for the duration of the bonus round. I saw some huge wins here but could still have done much, much better, making this an extremely addictive bonus round!

Fast Track Bonus Buy Feature

Hitting the super free spins isn’t easy, but thankfully Slotmill have seen fit to include a bonus buy feature in their Drunken Sailors slot game. There are three modes – 260x your stake buys you the super free spins, 70x your stake buys the regular free spins, whilst 15x your stake gets you a mystery re-spin with a guaranteed prize.

Drunken Sailors Slot Review Final Thoughts

I couldn’t stop spinning Drunken Sailors – it’s a great game with loads of big win potential, and just enough action during the base game that it doesn’t become monotonous between bonus rounds. I have to mark the game down slightly because the maximum win of 5,000x listed on the paytable appears to be a win cap – it would surely be possible to win more than this from the super free spins otherwise. If the cap was doubled to 10,000x, I would have scored this game even better.
