Egypt Megaways Slot (Red Tiger Gaming) Slot Demo & Review

We recently reviewed another Red Tiger machine, Athens Megaways, which was the first thing that sprung to mind after I loaded up the developer’s latest release for the first time – Egypt Megaways. The two games bear a striking resemblance to one another, although a glance at the paytable of this one reveals it to be a completely different game for the most part. Of course, one similarity between these titles is the maximum 117,649 Megaways that can potentially land on each spin. The top jackpot achievable in Egypt Megaways is a hefty 34,104x the total bet, whilst the RTP is a tad below average at 95.71%.

The first feature to get a mention whilst browsing the various help screens are the wild reels – these are located in positions two through five and are activated by collecting Eye of Horus scatter symbols whenever they land on the respective reel. When four scatters are collected, the entire reel becomes wild until such time as it forms part of a winning combination. These ‘super wilds’ also come with a multiplier of up to 7x, representing the number of active rows on the reel during each spin. A separate set of scatter symbols are used to trigger the free spins feature, which has three different volatility options – more wilds mean fewer spins and vice versa.

Fans of Red Tiger’s output – and especially their recent Athens Megaways release – are sure to get a kick out of our free demo slot of Egypt Megaways – it’s available to play below:

Egypt Megaways Slot Paytable

Every time I write a review of an Egypt-themed online slot, I can’t help but mention just how prolific these games are nowadays. The fact that I have already mentioned this in two previous reviews during the past week demonstrates this point remarkably well, don’t you think? There’s nothing wrong with re-using a good theme, of course, but I do believe that developers have started to become lazy when it comes to overusing this particular backdrop – try picking two or three examples from our review library and comparing the symbols and graphical styles used in each of them, I’ll bet there wasn’t much difference! There’s also the iterative aspect of this as too – Legacy of Egypt, Book of Dead, Legacy of Dead; we’ll probably get a Book of Egypt as well soon! In the case of this release (Egypt Megaways) – it’s not a bad-looking game by any means, but it doesn’t serve to add anything new to an already overcrowded genre.

The highest-paying symbol on the paytable is the Ankh, offering 5x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. The snake is worth 2x when all six symbols land on the reels, whilst the fan, scroll, and dagger have returns of 1.5x, 1.2x, and 1x the total bet, respectively. These are obviously not impressive payouts, although that’s perhaps par for the course whenever you have a game with the potential to land 117,649 occurrences of the same six of a kind symbol combination! The low pays are so worthless that they barely even deserve mentioning – just 0.4x the bet for six tens, with a maximum of 0.8x on offer for six aces.

I’m not sure what’s going on with the betting limits on Red Tiger’s recent slot releases – Egypt Megaways has minimum/maximum bets of just €0.10 and €2.00, respectively. This could be pre-empting the likely imposition of a £2.00 online slots bet limit for UKGC-licensed casinos in the near future, although it fairness that limit is much more likely to be £5.

Base Game & Modifiers

Egypt Megaways Slot Base Game

It’s getting quite tricky to find interesting ways to explain the basic gameplay of new Megaways releases these days. There are so few differences between most of them that it could end up becoming a meme in the near future. Egypt Megaways has all the usual mechanics – six reels of up to seven rows each, a maximum of 117,649 Megaways, payouts for three or more symbols starting from the left, you know the drill.

Wild Reels & Eye Of Horus Scatter

Keep an eye out for the special Eye of Horus scatter symbols that only appear on the centremost four reels, as these are your ticket to some huge base game wins! Each time an Eye of Horus scatter symbol lands on one of these four reels, it will be added to the meter positioned directly above; when the meter is full, the reel will turn into a stacked super wild until it has participated in four winning combinations.

You may spot the lights of the corresponding meter going out one at a time as the reel is included in a winning payway – there’s no way to extend this, sadly, as it is not possible to hit any further Eye of Horus scatters until the super wild has de-activated. A final note – each wild reel has a random multiplier between 2x and 7x attached to it, which is determined at the start of each game round.

Egypt Megaways Slot Bonus Features

Egypt Megaways Slot Free Spins Feature

As with many other Red Tiger releases, all six of the reels contain scatter symbols in Egypt Megaways, but there doesn’t seem to be any benefit to hitting more than three of these as far as the bonus round is concerned. Even just a small additional cash premium for hitting more than three scatters would have been a welcome change here.

Free Spins

Before each round of free spins, you’ll be asked to choose from three different levels of volatility for the next feature – you can go for 12 free spins with super wild, which will move around the centremost four reels from spin to spin, although this is the lowest volatility option.

If your appetite for risk-to-reward is a little higher, you can upgrade to either 8 free spins with 2 super wilds or 3 free spins with 3 super wilds instead. During the free spins, there is also a global multiplier which increases by 1x after every successful reel cascade. This is added to the multipliers of any super wilds that form part of a winning combination, making this the only part of the game where you can win the maximum jackpot of over 30,000x the total bet.

Pros

  • Great looking game, despite the limited colour palette – it suits the theme perfectly.
  • The base game has lots of potential for big wins.
  • Two different features to look forward to.

Cons

  • The basic payouts listed on the paytable are far from impressive.
  • Stacked wilds will often be gone long before you have hit anything impressive.
  • The bonus round has a tonne of potential, but the volatility of the 3 spin option will empty your bankroll in record time – trust me!

Final Thoughts

I really enjoyed the previous Athens Megaways release, and this one has an even bigger jackpot and, most likely, a superior feature set. Somehow though, I still didn’t enjoy this game quite as much – the low volatility free spin options aren’t for me, but the high volatility options take things too far in the other direction. Nevertheless, the huge jackpot is sure to attract interest from hardcore slots fans – and Egypt Megaways is certainly not undeserving of a few spins.
