Apparently, causing pain, suffering, and, in most cases, death to a bull is considered an art form that requires skill and bravery with a cape and sword in some regions around the world. I’m certainly not convinced of that, but I think I will leave that debate for an appropriate time. Why bring it up? Because the latest slot release to hit my inbox is El Torero, which translated means a person who practices the art of bullfighting, so essentially, a bullfighter. The slot, developed by Merkur Gaming, is themed on one of the world’s most controversial sports/activities/events, has 5 reels, 3 rows, 10 paylines, and a 96.08% RTP.
Looking past the theme, El Torero is a fairly basic slot with not much going for it in terms of features. This will appeal to some who like to keep it simple when having a punt on the slots and not to others who like their gameplay to include a bit more action bonus-wise. I think my introduction to this slot review gave a clue as to my thoughts on bullfighting, and whether or not you agree with them, it does seem this sport is controversial at best. For that reason, most slot providers would/will not touch it as a slot theme. Aside from El Toerero, I can only think of a few others who have used this ‘art form’ as a theme. Red Tiger Gaming’s Bulls Run Wild and Wild Toro 2 from Elk Studios are a couple of examples.
Right, moving on to the next stage of this review, it’s time to check out the symbol payouts that could come your way. The Wild Symbol offers the best return, with 20x the stake up for grabs for a 5-symbol combo. The Lady Holding a Handfan is next with 10x, while the Hat, Guitar, and Rose all return a maximum of 5x. The Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten playing cards represent the lower-paying symbols and share a 2x the stake max payout for five of a kind wins.
El Torero uses the now relatively obsolete staking method of choosing how many active paylines you want to spin with and how much you want to bet per payline. Essentially, that allows you to spin for as low as €0.01 per spin with just a single winway active or, when maxed out, €20.00 a pop with all 10 unlocked.
El Torero Slot Base Game
El Torero is a straightforward slot that does not boast many features, especially during the base game. It’s played out across a 5×3 reel format with up to 10 paylines. For the most part, you’ll need to line up three or more matching symbols on an active payline to earn a payout. The exceptions are the El Torero Wild Symbol and the top-paying regular symbol, which require two or more.
Two Gamble Options
After a winning combination during the base game, you can collect that win or gamble for more via one of two gamble features.
- Card Gamble: You gamble your winnings by guessing the colour of the next playing card from the deck.
- Ladder Gamble: You simply press a button, which gives you a 50/50 chance to climb the steps of a ladder.
At any point during either gamble game, you can collect what you’ve won, collect half, or continue playing.
El Torero Slot Bonus Features
The only notable feature is the free spins bonus game, which triggers when three of the Bull scatter symbols appear anywhere in view during the base game.

Once triggered, you receive 10 free spins of the reels, and these play out similarly to the base game. However, there is one significant difference, any wild symbols, which substitute for all others except the scatter, that land will remain sticky on the reels until the end of the bonus game.

El Torero Slot Review Final Thoughts
Even if I were to ignore the theme of El Torero, this isn't a slot I can imagine spinning on again. Aside from a dull free spins bonus, it lacks features, looks dated, and the symbol payouts hardly have that wow factor. The only positive is that you can spin from €0.01 per round if you want, meaning it's an excellent slot to try and claw yourself back from a losing casino deposit.
