Game Overview
Sometimes, we’re reminded just how much modern slots have evolved from the old-style low-payline fruit slots from eras gone by and Eldritch Dungeon from Print Studios is one of the biggest examples. The slot looks, feels, and plays like a video game with top-down graphics, a main character, dungeons, enemies, bosses, and battles. I’m telling you now, you’ve never seen a slot like it. Let’s just get into it straight away, as there’s so much to get through. Eldritch Dungeon is an 8×8 cluster pays slot with a 96.10% max win and a 20,000x the stake maximum win.
Much like an RPG video game, the ultimate aim of Eldritch Dungeon is to lead your warrior through dungeons, defeating monsters along the way. The further you get through the game, the more features, companions, character upgrades, and powers you’ll unlock. You start by working your way through a base game with Companion Strikes and enemy battles before undergoing a Dungeon Battle against up to 9 sets of enemies and finally making it to the Treasure Hall Free Spins Bonus Game.
This is one of those video slots with a ton of features, modifiers, and mechanics, so you’re probably better off just jumping into the deep end by playing the Eldritch Dungeon slot demo below.
Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Creating video slots that play more like video games is an angle that Print Studios likes to take—you only have to look at a couple of the developer’s other releases to see that. Like Reapers, for example, this is an 8×8 grid slot with a cluster pays mechanic and up to a huge 20,000x stake jackpot on offer. However, it doesn’t reach the heights of this one—or perhaps it was a practice attempt that led to this? Cash Defense is another, although Print Studios has gone with a Cash Defense style gaming experience instead of the RPG style of this one.
When you look at the Eldritch Dungeon paytable, it’s clear from the offset which symbol you’d like to see land the most frequently, with the Red Gem returning 1,000x the stake for a 15+ combo. There’s a big drop to the next most valuable, with the Green Gem offering 100x for a similar-sized combination, whilst the Blue and Purple Gems can deliver payouts up to 75x and 50x, respectively. The four hieroglyphic-style symbols are where the low pays come from, and each has a maximum return of 20x the stake.
Spins, or should I say turns, can be bought for as low as €0.10 and as much as €50.00. My advice is just to choose a bet that works well with your bankroll, as you’ll want it to stretch as far as possible playing this slot
Base Game & Modifiers
If ever a slot needed instructions or a tutorial like you get when playing video games, it’s Eldritch Dungeon. As I delve further into this review, you’ll see why, but for now, let’s start with the core base game mechanics. The gaming grid is 8×8 in size, and a cluster pays mechanic rewards you with payouts when 5 or more matching symbols are connected horizontally or vertically.
A tumble feature removes the symbols involved in winning combinations, and random instances of others drop onto the gaming grid from above. That mechanic can create additional wins, repeating the process until no new combos are revealed.
Wild Warrior
The Wild Warrior is the main character you’re ultimately trying to lead to glory. On every base game spin, he starts in a random position on the leftmost reel. In another random position on the rightmost reel is an exit. When cascades clear a path for the Warrior, who also has Wild symbol powers and can substitute for regular symbols, he moves to the closest available position to the exit.
Base Game Battles
Underneath random symbols on every spin are four enemy monsters. If there is a path the Warrior can use to get to an enemy, he will use it and battle the enemy. Each victory against a monster will award 1 or 4 Power Relics and 1 of 4 Spectral Effects.
Power Relics
These are powers that apply to the warrior should he make it to the Dungeon Battle:
- Relic of Vitality: This increases the Warrior’s health.
- Relic of Strength: This increases the Warrior’s attack damage.
- Relic of Fury: This makes some of the Warrior’s attacks deal major damage.
- Relic of Protection: This allows the Warrior to block some enemy attacks.
Spectral Effects
These play out at the end of the current base game spin once no more wins are revealed:
- Nightwing: 10 random symbols are converted into the same type.
- Elderwing: 19 random symbols are converted into the same type.
- Nightfang: This adds 4 wild symbols to random positions on the reels.
- Elderfang: This adds 10 wild symbols to random positions on the reels.
The Warrior’s Companions
When you first start a session on Eldritch Dungeon, you can only choose the Arcanist, as the other two are locked. The other two will unlock as you play the slot, and once they do, you can select them by clicking on your current companion. Each has a unique Companion Strike Ability that can randomly trigger in the base game when no more wins occur and a Dungeon Battle Attack that aids the Warrior as he fights foes.
- Arcanist: The Arcanist’s base game Companion Strike will remove between 11 and 16 of the same symbol type from the reels while also any symbols adjacent above or below them. As for the Battle Attack in the Dungeon, this can defeat an opponent instantly. It works best against the Gnaw Brute Monster and has a 4-volatility rating.
- Ranger: The Companion Strike will transform a line of 8 symbols into the same type and remove any symbols adjacent above or below them. In the Dungeon, the Ranger has the ability to deal damage to one enemy, with Wraiths as the number one target. The volatility rating for this attack is 3.
- Mauler: This character has a strike ability that converts two 2×2 sections on the gaming grid into the same symbol type and removes any symbols directly around them. The Dungeon Strike deals damage to all enemies in front of the Warrior, and the preferred targets are Elderkin monsters. The volatility rating of this strike is 5.
Eldritch Dungeon Slot Bonus Features
Are you still following? Good, as we’re now at the end game of the Eldritch Dungeon slot/video game.
Dungeon Battle
If the Warrior makes it to the exit during the base game, the Dungeon Battle feature triggers. He now has to battle up to nine enemies, and each win unlocks grid positions in the upcoming Treasure Hall Free Spins Bonus. The features end once the warrior has lost three lives or has made it to the ninth enemy.
Treasure Hall Free Spins
This bonus takes place on an 8×8 grid that initially has the six central positions unlocked and an additional position for each win in the Dungeon Battle feature. If the Warrior manages to defeat the Old One (ninth enemy) in that feature, the grid is totally unlocked, and the bonus starts with a 4×4 coin and the largest coin on the grid always holds a 2x multiplier value.
You receive 3 spins, and the aim is to land and merge coin symbols, which can hold multiplier prizes of up to 10,000x the stake. The spins reset back to 3 each time a new coin or Spectral Key symbol lands. The coins always merge to the largest possible size, and the bigger they are, the more valuable the multiplier prizes. The biggest is 8×8, which can hold multipliers of between 1,00x and 10,000x. As for the Spectral Keys that land, these can unlock 2, 3, or 6 random positions on the grid.
Feature Bet Options
You can use the following Feature bet options to enhance your chances of triggering the bonus game:
- 17.3x your current bet purchases a spin with 1 companion strike.
- 43.5x your current bet purchases a spin with 1 companion strike and 1 enemy defeated.
- 83.6x your current bet purchases a spin with 1 companion strike and 2 enemies defeated.
- 143.7x your current bet purchases a spin with 1 companion strike and 3 enemies defeated.
- 218x your current bet purchases a spin with 1 companion strike and 4 enemies defeated.
Pros
- An amazing slot/video game hybrid.
- So many features and modifiers.
Cons
- Will take some time to understand what is going on.
Eldritch Dungeon Slot Review Final Thoughts
I know some will find negatives, such as how long the bonus game can take, what with all the battles, etc. However, you can skip those battles using a button at the bottom of the screen if you wish. Personally, I love the innovation here, and Eldritch Dungeon is one of the easiest slot recommendations I have ever made.
