Eye Of Horus The Golden Tablet Megaways (Blueprint) Slot Demo & Review

If you’ve been a gambler for any significant period of time, there’s a relatively high chance that you have encountered one or more of Blueprint Gaming’s Eye of Horus slots at some point. The franchise has been around for nearly a decade now, but it’s quite an unusual series in that every entry that I can recall utilises identical assets – take a look at all of the games linked in the next section of this review, and you’ll be hard pushed to spot any differences by simply looking at the various screenshots. This latest entry to the series is Eye of Horus the Golden Tablet Megaways, but it’s a little different to the norm – this one has a maximum of only 15,625 payways instead of the typical 117,649. Whilst the RTP of 95.01% is a little below average, the maximum payout is listed as being capped at a monstrous 50,000x the total bet – a tidy sum, for sure, if it’s actually a realistic possibility!

Megaways aside, this game feels awfully familiar to somebody with plenty of experience with the earlier games. The same expanding wild symbols are present on the centre four reels, ensuring that even the base game has the potential to pay some significant prizes on occasion. Scatter symbols are present on all six reels, and hitting three or more of those will award you 12 free spins on an alternate playfield that features a tablet upgrade mechanic – again, something that will be immediately familiar to those who have played the other games in the series. One interesting new feature that has been added to the bonus is the ability to win extra spins via both the wild and scatter symbols – re-triggers are especially valuable in these games, as they will extend the amount of time where you get to play with the enhanced tablet symbols. We’re getting a little ahead of ourselves now though – more on the bonus round later!

Eye Of Horus The Golden Tablet Megaways Slot Paytable

I’m not sure exactly how many of the previous Eye of Horus games I have reviewed personally, but I do know that our review library is bursting with variants of the game! The original version of Eye of Horus was released in 2016, according to sources I can find on the web today – I could have sworn that it was much older than that! The strange thing is that Blueprint released a sequel with Megaways included years ago as well – it’s in our library under Eye of Horus Megaways – I’ve had a quick look back at the game just now, and it’s incredibly similar to this release, which does make me wonder what the idea behind Golden Tablet Megaways might be. It’s all the more strange when you consider that games such as Eye of Horus Power 4 expanded on the formula significantly way back in the day as well.

Leaving aside the question of ‘why’ for a moment, the top symbol in this version is, as ever, the Eye of Ra – it now pays 20x the total bet for a full payway of six of a kind. Anubis is next, paying 4x the bet for all six symbols, whilst the bird drops to just 2x and the scarab a lowly 1x the total stake for a complete payway. The Ankh and fan symbols are each worth 0.8x when all six of those appear in view, leaving us with just the four royal symbols to talk about – those are all worth the same 0.4x the total bet for a six of a kind combination; I almost forgot – the scatters have a payout in this game too! It’s only 20x the total bet for all six, but that’s still much better than nothing at all.

The quick bet selection screen is packed with wager options, which makes a refreshing change nowadays! It’s all the more appreciated considering that the minimum/maximum limits have been set at just €0.10 and €10.00 per spin, respectively.

Base Game & Modifiers

Eye Of Horus The Golden Tablet Megaways Slot Base Game
Eye of Horus the Golden Tablet Megaways slot base game

Whilst most Megaways slots utilise a six reel layout with up to seven ‘rows’ per reel, this machine opts for a lower limit of only five sections per reel instead. This change results in a huge shift in the maximum number of possible payways – down from 117,649 to just 15,625. You would expect such a significant drop to have a noticeable effect on the prizes offered on the paytable, but to my eyes, they don’t look any more generous than any other Megaways game, perhaps even the opposite!

Expanding Wilds Symbol

The wild pharaoh symbol is present on reels two, three, four, and five, and can land during both the base game and the bonus round. Each time one of these symbols lands, it will expand to cover its entire reel – if you happen to get all four of them at once, this can result in some impressive payouts!

Eye Of Horus The Golden Tablet Megaways Slot Bonus Features

To trigger the bonus round, you will need to hit at least three of the six scatter symbols simultaneously on a base game spin. This will award you 12 free spins regardless of the number of triggering symbols, but you do at least get a little cash bonus for hitting more than three – 5x, 10x, or 20x your stake for four, five, or six symbols, respectively.

Free Spins

During the bonus round, every wild symbol that lands on the reels will cause a lower-paying symbol to be replaced by the highest-paying Eye of Ra symbol. After hitting five wild symbols, all of the tablets on the reels will have been converted into Eye of Ra symbols, ensuring that any remaining spins are much more generous than those that came before!

Hitting one, two, three, or four wild symbols during the free games mode will add one, three, five, or seven additional spins to your remaining total. You can also win a 12-spin re-trigger by hitting three or more scatters, just as in the base game.

Pros

  • It’s Eye of Horus – but with tonnes of payways instead of a paltry ten pay lines.
  • The huge top prize of up to 50,000x the total bet.
  • The bonus round has the potential to pay out some huge prizes – if you can hit enough wilds.

Cons

  • I honestly can’t find anything here that is better than the older Megaways game.
  • The graphics look pretty dated to be in 2023 – surely it must be time for a revamp by now, Blueprint?
  • Wild symbols expand even when doing so does not create any winning combinations – it’s only a tiny thing, but it's super annoying!

Final Thoughts

Comparing this game against the older Eye of Horus Megaways reveals that this one has a lower RTP as well as a lower payout for hitting the scatters. Almost every other aspect that I could see is identical, which begs the question – why would anybody choose to play this one over the older Megaways version?
