Game Overview

Okay, guys, calm down with the slot naming weirdness, please – the full name of this latest game by Reel Kingdom & Pragmatic Play is “Floating Dragon Hold & Spin Megaways” – if that isn’t the definition of getting out of hand, I don’t know what could be! But what’s in a name, after all? There is a maximum payout of 20,000x your bet, up to 236,196 pay ways, and a 96.70% RTP – impressive vital statistics for any online slot and way above the typical averages for a Megaways game. Will this be another super hit for Pragmatic Play? Let’s find out!

This is anything but just another Megaways slot – that part is evident as soon as the reels show up on the screen, and you see the crazy layout of six reels with heights of up to nine symbols each. It’s a tumbling reels game, so you have the potential to win several times every time you pay for a spin, and there are both mystery and “fish money” special symbols in the base game as well as a free spins bonus round to break up the monotony of the standard play.

Lots of features then, combined with a way above average RTP and one of the highest numbers of Megaways we have ever seen in an online slot. Pragmatic Play has this one in the bag, don’t they? Feel free to fire up our free demo slot of Floating Dragon Hold & Spin Megaways below if you would prefer to find out for yourself!

Floating Dragon Megaways Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols

Paytable For Floating Dragon Megaways Slot

A quick google search for “floating dragon” didn’t turn up much, other than Pragmatic’s original slot title Floating Dragon Hold and Spin, obviously. There’s also a Wikipedia entry for a 1982 horror novel by Peter Straub of the same name, but it is not related to the game we are reviewing today. With a bit more effort, I eventually found several references to the Chinese legend of Feilong, or flying dragon, which also happens to be the name of the Bruce Lee character in Capcom’s Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Keep on digging, and you will keep on finding more and more obscure references relating to Chinese mythology; Feilong is a proper name, apparently, and is often used as a title for other ideas, objects, people, and things. Okay, I think we are far enough down the rabbit hole now – feel free to click this link if you want more flying dragon randomness in your life, however.

Of course, the real question is how does it pay? A quick glance at the Floating Dragon Hold & Spin Megaways ( I’ll stop writing the full name now, I promise) paytable reveals one symbol – the ship – has a huge return of 50x the bet for every full pay way of six-of-a-kind, whilst the rest of the symbols are all worth a fraction of that amount. A blue and green coloured bird takes the second-place spot, for example, yet pays just 5x your full stake for all six of those. The butterfly is next with a return of just 2.5x, followed by a strange looking oriental dude at 2x and what looks like a bunch of fish at 1.5x. Those are some pretty random symbols, guys – where are the flying dragons?!

At least we know what to expect in terms of wager selection in a Pragmatic Play slot by now – two buttons on either side of the spin control allow you to increase or decrease the current bet, as well as opening another window with more granular control. The minimum permitted amount is €0.20, while the upper limit is €100.00 per round.

Base Game & Modifiers

Win Up To 20,000x Your Bet Across 263,196 Paylines In The Floating Dragon Megaways Online Slot From Provider Pragmatic Play

The strange reel layout makes for an equally unusual base game experience, as you will be effectively playing on two sets of reels at once. The lower grid comprises six reels divided into six possible rows each, whilst there are three horizontal rows arranged above reels 2-4 in a 4×3 configuration. This setup results in a maximum grid of 6x9x9x9x9x6, equalling the unusual 236,196 maximum number of pay ways.

Fish Money Symbol

The “fish money” symbol appears on the regular paytable, so I didn’t expect it to be anything out of the ordinary; it seems I was wrong on this occasion! According to page two of the paytable, the fish money symbol will acquire a random value between 2x and 5,000x the current stake at the beginning of each spin, which will then become the jackpot prize if you should happen to trigger the free spins from the same spin.

This is an unusual method of determining a maximum jackpot, but my real issue with this mechanic is the completely opaque method of determining your highest-possible payout. During the base game, the fish money symbol behaves the same way as any other and has the lowest return out of all of the picture symbols at just 1.5x for every completed pay way consisting of six-of-a-kind.

Mystery Symbols

A Chinese lantern is used as the “mystery symbol” in Floating Dragon and works the same way as other Megaways games with this feature. After the reels stop spinning, all the mystery symbols currently in view will transform in unison into one randomly selected matching symbol, which could be anything from the lowest-paying royal to the highest-paying picture.

The mystery symbol can give you a great return in the base game but is even more useful in the free spin bonus round – see below for details.

Floating Dragon Megaways Slot Bonus Features

There Are Two Bonus Rounds That Can Be Triggered Whilst Playing The Floating Dragon Megaways Video Slot

The main bonus round of Floating Dragon will be triggered any time three or more scatter symbols land anywhere on the reels. The minimum trigger of three will award you 10 free spins, whilst four, five, or six will give you 15, 20, or 25 free spins, respectively. Sadly, there isn’t a cash payout for the scatters, but the additional free spins, when hitting more than three, do go a long way towards making up for this!

The free spins mode adds a new symbol to the reels – the LADY. She can appear on every reel except for the top four positions and will collect the value of every Fish Money symbol visible each time she lands. Each Lady symbol which appears is also added to a meter which keeps track of the collected total until the end of the bonus round.

After every four Lady symbols which land during this feature, the bonus will be retriggered, adding ten more free spins to your remaining counter. After you collect your first four Lady symbols, a 2x multiplier will begin to be applied to all Fish Money wins, increasing to 3x after eight Lady symbols and 10x after twelve. After this, you can continue collecting more groups of four lady symbols and adding another 10x to your current multiplier indefinitely – the only limit is how lucky you are!

As a bonus, whenever a Lady symbol lands and no Fish Money symbols are available for her to collect, a bonus round modifier can randomly step in and add several Fish Money symbols to the reels in random positions.

Hold & Spin Feature

I almost missed this one! Pragmatic Play is spoiling us rotten by adding yet another full-on feature to Floating Dragon Megaways. This is triggered by a secondary set of scatter symbols which can occasionally get in the way of regular winning combinations. Still, I think most of us are willing to trade a few blocked payline wins for an extra feature, don’t you? Three or more golden coins anywhere on the screen then will trigger the Hold & Spin feature, and it actually costs more than the free spins in the bonus buy mode, suggesting that this part of the game may be even more generous than the free spins bonus round!

During Hold & Spin, all the triggering symbols will become sticky and lock in place, while all the regular symbols on the reels will be removed, leaving only gold coins, diamonds, and empty slots. It’s a typical “three-spin” feature where your remaining count resets to three each time you land a gold coin and only completes when you go three spins without landing any new symbols.

Each Diamond symbol that lands will award you a random prize of between 50x and 2,000x your bet – I’m unsure what the odds of each value are, but I will say that I never hit anything higher than 75x during my testing of the game. A payout of at least 20x your bet is guaranteed during hold & win, so the game will reset your remaining counter to three again if you run out of spins without winning this much. You can’t argue with that!

Bonus Buy

If it is permitted within your jurisdiction, you can buy the free spins bonus round for 100x the normal bet or go for the hold & win bonus at 120x. During testing, I had better luck in the free spins, so I would probably choose that option, but I’d say they are roughly equal overall.

Floating Dragon Megaways Slot Review Final Thoughts

Fantastic – I love this machine, except for the ridiculous name! I thought that the Megaways craze had run its course a while ago, but it seems that developers have over plans and plenty more ideas of how to make these games fun, engaging, and unique. You’ll love this one…. Even if it is called Floating Dragon Hold & Win Megaways.
