Nolimit City focuses on creating adult-themed games, and most of their titles have bundles of mods, features, and unique mechanics to learn about as you play. Their latest title, Folsom Prison, has just 16 payways in its default configuration, but this can expand up to a maximum of 3,456 in special circumstances. The RTP is 96.07% in regular play, whilst the maximum win is 75,000x your stake.
The reel area is a feature by itself in this game – just four reels with two rows are unlocked to begin with, but this can expand up to a 4-6-6-6-4 area if the correct sequence of features happens to land. Folsom Prison Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
Folsom Prison video slot is very much the kind of game you would expect from this developer – its deliberately dark, with free spin modes centred around various methods of execution, a special cockroach symbol that can unlock cells on your behalf, and the developer’s trademark xWays/xSplit features which both act to increase the number of active payways. I can’t think of many other online slots based around prisons except NLC’s other hit title San Quentin, and even most crime-based online slots will tend to be quite light-hearted in nature. Because gambling is a strictly for-adults recreational activity, it’s quite surprising that there aren’t more 18+ rated games such as this – movies are full of adult-only content, so why not online slots?
It was difficult to guess what to expect from the paytable of Folsom Prison online slot before looking – I don’t think I have ever seen a slot that starts with just 16 payways before! There are five top-paying criminal picture symbols, but their payouts range from just 1x your stake at the low end up to 2.5x your stake for the highest-paying guy who even has “cash” tattooed across his forehead. Obviously, you will not be hitting the biggest wins in this game from simple line hits alone, so where do the big wins come from? Firstly, you have the xWays symbols, which can be split into four symbols each. Catching multiple xWays symbols simultaneously can multiply the number of payways you win on from one to several hundred, so you’ll want to keep your eyes open for these. However, as with many other slots, the very largest wins are reserved for the game’s many bonus features.
The minimum bet per spin is €0.20, and there are 25 options ranging from this bottom figure up to the maximum bet of €100.00 per spin. This looks to be a seriously volatile game, though, so I would be careful about betting too big – even if you think you have the bankroll to cover it!
Base Game & Modifiers
When you first begin to play Folsom Prison, you will likely be playing on the smallest playfield you have ever seen in an online slot. With just two rows of four reels each, there are just 16 potential payways to score a win on. To unlock further positions, you need to catch a wild, scatter, xSplit, or xWays symbol adjacent to a locked position, which will then unlock the closest locked positions above and below it on the respective reel. You can also unlock additional positions further up the playfield when the cockroach symbol lands, as explained below:
Cockroach Feature
The cockroach is described as being able to go anywhere within the prison. Still, their nests will only spawn in open positions on the middle three reels or occasionally transform from a scatter symbol.
The position where the cockroach first lands will transform into a wild, after which it will walk above the reels and add a multiplier to any symbol that it passes. Cockroaches will also unlock any locked cells that they happen to pass through, increasing the number of active payways.
During the bonus modes, cockroach nest symbols will also appear. These remain inactive until a cockroach walks onto them, increasing the cockroach’s multiplier level. Cockroaches can have a multiplier level of 1, 2, and 3 before jumping to a maximum of 10.
Toast Bet
For a cost of an additional 20% of your current bet, you can guarantee yourself a scatter symbol on the second reel. Landing two scatters will open up the middle two rows on reel five, so adding the toast bet to your wager can make this much easier to achieve. Overall, it’s probably worth the extra cost but bear in mind that the scatter will also block some possible winning ways, which can be problematic when you only have a small number of cells open.
Xways Symbols
These symbols can appear anywhere on the reels and will divide into between two and four of the same symbols. The xWays symbol will also unlock an additional position above and below the currently open positions on the reel it lands.

The xSplit symbol is quite rare, appearing only on the central two rows of reels two through five. When an xSplit symbol lands, it will split the entire row it lands on, doubling the number of active payways. It will also divide itself into two wild symbols.
If an xSplit symbol splits a scatter symbol when triggering a bonus round, an additional free spin will also be awarded.
Folsom Prison Slot Free Spins Feature
There are two free spin rounds in Folsom Prison video slot. The first type, the Walk the Line Free Spins, is awarded for hitting three scatters, whilst four scatters will reward the more generous The Chair Free Spins instead.
Walk The Line Free Spins
This feature begins with the centre 2-4-4-4-2 rows unlocked, and you are guaranteed one cockroach on each free spin. You will receive eight free spins by default, but this can be increased by landing scatters on reel five during the bonus round. If this happens, it will also upgrade any remaining free spins into the higher paying The Chair spins.
The Chair Free Spins
The highest-paying free spin mode begins with all 4-4-4-4-4 row positions unlocked, and you are guaranteed at least three cockroaches on each free spin. xWays and xSplit symbols are particularly valuable here, allowing you to reach a maximum of 46,664 possible ways to win.
I only managed to play a few of these spins during testing by uPGrading the last few of my Walk the Line free spins – hitting four scatters during the base game is probably quite challenging to do because this feature is obviously where the big money is at!
Bonus Buy
If you live in a jurisdiction where bonus buying is permitted, you can purchase your way to either the Walk the Line free spins or The Chair free spins using the bonus buy feature. The Chair free spins cost a whopping 1,500x your stake to purchase, further highlighting how valuable this feature really is!
