Game Overview
In the first month of 2024, Pragmatic Play has already released more slot games than some software providers manage in a year. When I imagine the goings on inside the Pragmatic Play HQ, I picture a vast factory full of hard-working minions working on a conveyor belt production line, passing the next slot down the line as it goes through the various stages of development. The iGaming supplier is like a well-oiled machine that no other can match in terms of prolificness, and today, I’m giving you the lowdown on the latest slot to come out of the studio. Fortune Dragon is a 5-reel, 3-row, and 243 ways-to-win slot, with seven variations of a free spins bonus with 576 win ways available.
There are two, okay, three things of note with the Fortune Dragon slot, and that is a random win multiplier that is applied to wins involving wild symbols, a free spins bonus that unlocks three extra positions and thus increases the ways to win to 576, and the choice of seven variations of that bonus game. For the latter, you can choose from up to 25 free spins, but the more you go for, the lower the wild multiplier values that can land.
If the above sounds interesting, or even if it doesn’t, and you’re just curious, you can spin away on the Fortune Dragon slot demo below. You can spin for free and decide whether this is a title you’d give a chance wagering some real cash at an online casino.
Fortune Dragon Slot Theme, Stakes, Pays & Symbols
I didn’t even have to power up Fortune Dragon to find out the slot’s theme, as I guessed correctly based on its name. Fortune and Dragon in the same title usually means a Chinese luck theme, and so it proved once I did get the demo up and running for this review. Asian-themed slots focusing on luck are ten a penny, and while some are instantly forgettable, quite a few have gone on to prove popular. Coincidently, one of the best we’ve reviewed has the same name, PG Soft’s Fortune Dragon, a 3×3 slot that looks amazing and has an entertaining free spins bonus game which could produce up to three multipliers of up to 10x on each spin. If you’d instead rather stick to Pragmatic Play for your slots, then Floating Dragon New Year Festival Ultra Megaways Hold & Spin, which offers up to 147,456 Megaways across a 6×8 reel configuration and a 20,000x max win, is a good shout.
I could name countless other good slots with a lucky Chinese theme, but I don’t want to go too off-topic, as I’m here to review Fortune Dragon – and as always, I’ll dig into the symbols first and foremost. There are ten regular symbols, half of which are animals considered lucky in Chinese culture. The Pig tops the charts with a 20x the stake payout for five across successive reels. The Dragon and Frog each share the next best reward of 16x the stake, while the Koi and Turtle both bring a top payout of 6x. Bringing up the rear are the less-than-imaginative player card symbols – the Ace and King deliver a maximum win of 4x, and the Queen, Jack, and Ten share a 2x reward.
In true Pragmatic Play style, there’s a raft of staking options to choose from. Although a tad high, the minimum bet per spin is set at €0.50, while the €250.00 max bet should prove adequate for most of you.
Fortune Dragon Slot Base Game & Modifiers
The base game is not the most exciting I’ve come across by a long stretch, but there are at least wild multiplier symbols that can help boost payouts. During the base game, there are 243 ways to win, and you’ll win on one of them each time you land matching symbols from left to right on consecutive reels.
Wild Symbol
As I mentioned above, there is a wild symbol on the Fortune Dragon slot, but it does more than substitute for all regular-paying symbols. It can land on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th reels and will have a randomly assigned multiplier (shown at the top right of the reels) of 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 8x, 10x, 15x, 30x, or 40x. If a wild symbol is part of a winning combination during a spin, that multiplier is applied to the standard payout for that symbol.
Fortune Dragon Slot Bonus Features
That base game is nothing but the undercard for the main event, a free spins bonus which triggers once three or more scatter symbols hit the reels in any position. However, as you’ll find out, you’re not stuck with the same bonus each time, as you can choose from one of seven variations each time those scatters land.
Free Spins Feature
When you land three, four, or five scatter symbols, you’re first paid 2x, 5x, or 20x, respectively, before being given the choice of the aforementioned seven free spins bonus game variations. Before I detail what those are, you should note that whichever you choose will play out across a new reel format that offers 576 ways to win thanks to a new row opening up above the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th reels. As for those free spins options, you can choose from:
- 25 free spins with a potential wild multiplier of 2x, 3x, and 5x
- 20 free spins with a potential wild multiplier of 3x, 5x, and 8x
- 15 free spins with a potential wild multiplier of 5x, 8x, and 10x
- 13 free spins with a potential wild multiplier of 8x, 10x, and 15x
- 10 free spins with a potential wild multiplier of 10x, 15x, and 30x
- 6 free spins with a potential wild multiplier of 15x, 30x, and 40x
- A mystery number of free spins and a mystery range of multipliers
It is possible to re-trigger the free spins by landing three or more scatter symbols, and it will take place after the current round – again giving you a choice of the above variations.
Pros
- Having the choice of seven free spins bonuses is good but hardly new.
Cons
- There are many similar slots in the Pragmatic portfolio.
Fortune Dragon Slot Review Final Thoughts
It’s fair to say that aside from the wild multipliers and the additional ways in the bonus game, there’s nothing to write home about here. What do the cool kids say these days? Meh? That’s the feeling I got when playing Fortune Dragon - it's okay but instantly forgettable. It oozes a ‘we need to make the quota’ sort of release.
